COMMERCIAL | Mixed-use building | In the historic industrial area by the river Akerselva in Oslo, Norway, Snøhetta has designed a building that explores the possibilities of the future in ventilation. Named Vertikal Nydalen, the building is a pilot in a research project on more sustainable ventilation and energy solutions and is the very first mixed-use building in Norway with naturally ventilated offices. It results from an interdisciplinary collaboration between engineers and architects and uses innovative architectural and technical solutions. Compared to traditional mechanical ventilation, naturally ventilated offices have less need for remodeling and maintenance and can potentially give a better experience for the users. The 18-floor building hosts restaurants at street level, offices on the following five floors, and apartments on top. Each of the building's 40 apartments is unique, the sizes range from 44 sqm to 143 sqm with a variety of layouts. We share our name with a beautiful, remote, and historically important mountain in central Norway. Snøhetta is a place nobody is from, but anyone can experience. Creating places for societies to connect with each other and with the world around them is a primary motivation in our work. Dialogue and diversity empower this approach. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. - Simple House | Scapelab | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | The Simple House is a modern, prefabricated timber-frame home located in the scenic, rural landscape of Radovljica, Slovenia, and designed by the architectural firm Scapelab. Completed in 2006, the project offers a contemporary take on the traditional, archetypal Slovenian farmhouse. The house was designed to be cost-effective, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance, with a construction process that allowed for rapid on-site assembly The design is centered on a basic pitched-roof volume, but its cladding offers a unique, modern interpretation. The facade features a veil of horizontally oriented timber louvers on the north and south sides, which contrast with vertically oriented zinc panels that cover the roof and parts of the east and west elevations. While the house appears to lack traditional windows from a distance, the louvers and gaps in the timber cladding allow natural light and ventilation to filter into the interior while maintaining a sense of privacy. The design is interactive, allowing occupants to adapt the house to the weather and their mood. The interior and exterior spaces are functionally distributed in a "corridorless" design, with an open floor plan that flows naturally from one space to another. The building opens up onto terraces on both the northern and southern facades, allowing residents to pursue outdoor living depending on the weather; the southern terrace offers warmth on colder days, while the northern terrace provides shade during the summer. Sustainability is a key feature of the Simple House. The highly insulated envelope, combined with solar panels on the roof and a central heating plant, ensures low running costs and a reduced environmental footprint. The use of durable, low-maintenance materials like zinc and wood further contributes to the home's longevity and minimal upkeep needs. - Cabin MM01 | Christian Tonko | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Designed by Austrian architect Christian Tonko and completed in 2022, Cabin MM01 is a modular and minimalist vacation home in the rural, alpine landscape of Carinthia, Austria. The 25-square-meter cabin, which is complemented by an equal-sized terrace, was created as a base for a couple to enjoy outdoor activities. The project is a testament to sustainable and flexible design, with a structure that is both easily transportable and leaves no lasting trace on its site. The cabin is a study in efficient and elegant micro-architecture, based on the standard dimensions and frames of shipping containers. Its name, "MM01," is a tribute to Malcolm McLean, the inventor of the modern shipping container. This design approach allows the cabin to be transported easily by a standard truck and installed on-site using removable screw foundations. When the cabin is relocated, the site can be fully restored to its original state. The compact 25-square-meter internal space is efficiently divided into four equally sized zones: a bedroom, a living/workspace, a kitchen, and a bathroom. An equally sized, covered terrace extends the living area outdoors, providing a shaded space to enjoy the surrounding forest. The terrace is oriented to the north for optimal shading and privacy. Expansive glazing lines the front of the cabin, connecting the interior with the outdoors and making the space feel larger than its physical footprint. The MM01 cabin combines high-quality, durable materials with clever space-saving techniques. While inspired by shipping containers, the cabin is built from specially constructed metal frames and highly insulated panels for superior thermal performance compared to typical metal containers. Despite its small size, the cabin features modern conveniences, including a full kitchen with a dishwasher and a washing machine. The 25-square-meter cabin, which is complemented by an equal-sized terrace, was created as a base for a couple to enjoy outdoor activities. The project is a testament to sustainable and flexible design, with a structure that is both easily transportable and leaves no lasting trace on its site. The cabin is a study in efficient and elegant micro-architecture, based on the standard dimensions and frames of shipping containers. Its name, "MM01," is a tribute to Malcolm McLean, the inventor of the modern shipping container. This design approach allows the cabin to be transported easily by a standard truck and installed on-site using removable screw foundations. When the cabin is relocated, the site can be fully restored to its original state. The compact 25-square-meter internal space is efficiently divided into four equally sized zones: a bedroom, a living/workspace, a kitchen, and a bathroom. An equally sized, covered terrace extends the living area outdoors, providing a shaded space to enjoy the surrounding forest. The terrace is oriented to the north for optimal shading and privacy. Expansive glazing lines the front of the cabin, connecting the interior with the outdoors and making the space feel larger than its physical footprint. The MM01 cabin combines high-quality, durable materials with clever space-saving techniques. While inspired by shipping containers, the cabin is built from specially constructed metal frames and highly insulated panels for superior thermal performance compared to typical metal containers. Despite its small size, the cabin features modern conveniences, including a full kitchen with a dishwasher and a washing machine. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Situated on the Dutch island of Texel, the Holiday Home by Orange Architects is a compact, 70-square-meter cabin designed to offer a flexible and sustainable retreat close to nature. Designed for a client who wanted to maximize the experience of their vacation, the house prioritizes social spaces during the day and adapts to become private sleeping quarters at night through a clever system of rotating panels and doors. The exterior is a striking, sculptural volume clad in black-stained timber, which allows the house to recede into its woodland surroundings while creating a bold aesthetic. In contrast, the interior features a bright and warm material palette of light-colored birch plywood, creating a seamless and spacious feeling throughout the compact home. During the day, the ground-floor living area, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom can be opened to create a single, fluid space. Large, five-meter-high glass windows and doors on the southern façade connect the living area to a covered terrace and the surrounding forest, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. At night, movable wooden panels can be rotated or closed to create private rooms, including an en-suite bathroom. A lofted level provides additional sleeping or living space. RESIDENTIAL | House | Inspired by the traditional farmhouse and hayrack that once occupied the site, Her arhitektura's Hiša Š is a striking and sympathetic reinterpretation of rural vernacular architecture, situated in a small farming hamlet in Slovenia. The 262 m2 residence balances traditional form with contemporary expression, integrating itself harmoniously with its surroundings through a thoughtful use of material and structure. The design is intrinsically shaped by the sloping terrain of the site. A partially underground basement, constructed from exposed concrete, anchors the home, providing a grounded counterpoint to the warm wooden structure above. This lower level accommodates practical spaces such as a large garage and service areas, as well as a more rustic "country-style room". The main living spaces are located on the upper floor, where the ceiling soars dramatically to the roof ridge, revealing the exposed timber frame and creating a sense of spaciousness. A sleeping area is also on this floor, with a gallery above it designed as a flexible and playful space for the owners' grandchildren. A key architectural element that bridges the new design with the regional building traditions is the covered porch, or gank, on the eastern side of the building. This external corridor connects the rooms on the ground floor, functioning as both a practical pathway and a symbolic link to the communal outdoor spaces of historic rural dwellings. This gesture, along with the prominently visible timber frame and the use of natural materials, ensures the new build feels both modern and deeply connected to its alpine setting. The interior of Hiša Š contrasts the rustic wooden structure with a clean, contemporary aesthetic. Modern furniture and materials are balanced with carefully chosen color accents and wallpaper. A notable feature is the suspended, rotating fireplace, which serves as a central point of life during colder months. In warmer weather, the living area can be extended outdoors onto a terrace and towards the pool area, which is cleverly shielded from the road by a green barrier. Through this project, Her arhitektura successfully delivered a home that respectfully nods to its heritage while providing a distinctly modern and functional space for its inhabitants. Located on land leased from the city as part of a tradition of community gardens in Poland, the home serves as a much-needed escape from urban life. The garden site is secluded by a large hedge and filled with fruit trees, pines, and lilac bushes. The design is a clever mix of inspirations, combining the aesthetics of an old Swedish transistor radio with the natural setting. The house is a simple, rectangular box clad in glass and plywood framed by white high-pressure laminate panels. Its transparent nature makes it feel embedded within the lush greenery, creating a fluid connection between the indoors and outdoors. The large windows flood the interior with natural light, enhancing the sense of space. The modern-day retreat was conceived as a surprise gift from a husband to his wife, an art museum patron, art collector, and philanthropist, to serve as a creative studio and lounge space. Perched 12 feet off the ground, the treehouse is situated in a back corner of the property and offers exceptional views of the Getty Center and downtown Los Angeles. The design is a clever interpretation of a childhood treehouse, reflecting the client's affinity for such a retreat while providing an adult environment. The project incorporates a live but fallen pine tree, with the structure hovering above it to suggest a delicate balance between the architecture and nature. A key feature is a glass viewport in the walnut floor, which symbolically connects the structure to the tree below, reminiscent of a classic treehouse hatch. Access is provided by a concrete stair that leads up to an open metal and wood plank stair, a modern interpretation of a treehouse ladder.
