  • The Lake Cabin | RX Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Lake Cabin is a modern retreat located on the edge of a lake in Brabourne, within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South East England. Designed by RX Architects, the cabin is approached on foot via a woodland trail, as it is not accessible by vehicles. The project reflects a "sense of place," using natural materials to create a strong visual connection between the structure and its rural environment. The 35-square-meter cabin is designed with an exposed timber frame and features two full glazed elevations that angle out toward the water. These sliding glass walls open up to a cantilevered deck that hovers over the water, providing seamless access for activities like swimming and kayaking. The building is clad in a mix of rough-sawn and planed English oak planks, which are left unfinished to weather naturally over time and integrate further with the landscape. A concrete base acts as a datum line, stepping up to form a bench and log store. The roof and its trims are clad in a contrasting patinated bronze finish. Inside, the cabin features a restrained, open-plan layout with a garden room, kitchen, and a wet room on the main level. Wide-format Douglas Fir boards line the interior walls, adding to the cabin's natural, rustic feel. A mezzanine level provides a sleeping area. The entire design is oriented toward maximizing views of the lake and surrounding countryside. • Atelier Nyp | Studio Bua | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | Studio | The Atelier Nyp is a sustainable artist's studio and guesthouse designed by Studio Bua on the site of a former sheep shed in remote western Iceland. Completed in 2023, the cabin was built on the repurposed concrete foundation of the original structure, which had been destroyed by extreme weather. This approach minimized the project's environmental impact and maximized existing resources, both material and cultural. Located in Skarðsströnd, the cabin is part of a broader development by Studio Bua of former farm buildings into a home, cultural spaces, and additional guesthouses. The project is named after the Nypurhyrna mountain that rises up from behind it. The cabin features a deliberately simple, jet-black corrugated steel exterior that references the local vernacular and protects against the harsh Icelandic weather. Its off-center pitched roof echoes the distinctive shape of one of the area's dominant mountain peaks. The interior features exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls, which create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The space is divided into two independent units: a workspace with living quarters for the artist and her husband, and a self-contained mini-apartment for guests. Salvaged materials were incorporated throughout the project, including a staircase from a historic Reykjavík building and kitchen units from a 1950s apartment. RESIDENTIAL | House | Located in a small hamlet in the heights of Bruson, this mayen—a traditional Swiss mountain hut or cottage typically made of stone and wood, often used as a seasonal or year-round residence in alpine regions—was close to collapse when it was purchased with the intention of being transformed by a couple who fell in love with the area. Previously, there was no basement, and the mayen rested directly on the ground. To make it habitable, a masonry foundation was constructed, and an extension was added at the rear, upstream, which houses two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a technical room. Upstairs, the approximately 35 square meters available were entirely dedicated to the living space and multiple storage areas. Inside, the chosen materials alternate between modernity and tradition, with a prominent use of larch. A fitted wall cleverly solves the layout of the living area by integrating the kitchen, storage, and a reading nook. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_513b13b7facd41ccbef4aca2dbff2190~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2400,h_1600,al_c,q_90/The%20MCL%20Barn-ALP'ARCHITECTURE-Christophevoisin%20(16).jpg Please Wait The MCL Barn-ALP'ARCHITECTURE-Christophevoisin (1).webp The MCL Barn-ALP'ARCHITECTURE-Christophevoisin (5).jpg The MCL Barn-ALP'ARCHITECTURE-Christophevoisin (2).jpg 1/4 0 Product 5.2K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in The MCL Barn Bagnes, Switzerland Architects: Alp Architecture ALP'ARCHITECTURE Architecture Office Switzerland Area: Year: City: Client: 2018 Bagnes Construction: Category: RESIDENTIAL Project Type: House Post Type: Building Country: Switzerland Photographers: Christophe Voisin the Architects Description: Located in a small hamlet in the heights of Bruson, this mayen—a traditional Swiss mountain hut or cottage typically made of stone and wood, often used as a seasonal or year-round residence in alpine regions—was close to collapse when it was purchased with the intention of being transformed by a couple who fell in love with the area. Inside, the chosen materials alternate between modernity and tradition, with a prominent use of larch. A fitted wall cleverly solves the layout of the living area by integrating the kitchen, storage, and a reading nook. The resort is located in Wieniotowo, Poland, near the Baltic Sea coast, and was built based on the owners' travel experiences and desire to create a perfect, relaxing getaway. The design of the holiday homes aims to combine comfortable accommodation with the surrounding wild nature, with each of the five houses named to evoke a specific feeling: Pasja (Passion), Wolność (Freedom), Spokój (Peace), Oddech (Breath), and Bliskość (Closeness). The homes, each 63 square meters, are equipped to a high hotel standard, and four of them feature private saunas and hot tubs on the terraces. The site's layout was meticulously planned by LOOKA studio, with the houses arranged radially to give each guest a sense of private space, and large terraces offer panoramic views of the surrounding fields and countryside. The project was developed in stages, with the expansion that revealed the Bliskość and Oddech houses being highlighted in mid-2022. In addition to the adult-focused amenities, the resort is designed to be family-friendly, featuring a "Kids Club" with three separate playrooms for different age groups, a large playground, and a bonfire area. The homes are also well-equipped for families, with safety gates on the stairs, baby baths, and high chairs. For active guests, the retreat is situated just 300 meters from the Velo Baltica cycling route and 400 meters from the beach. Guests can also order breakfast baskets filled with local products, which are delivered directly to their homes. Nestled in the lush hills near San Jose de Mayo, the project embodies a serene fusion of modern architecture and traditional building techniques, creating a shaded retreat that harmonizes with its vibrant natural setting. The design of Heavenly Highlands emphasizes a profound connection with nature. More than 300 trees were planted on the property as part of the project, allowing the residence to blend seamlessly into the dense surrounding vegetation. The architecture is a study in contrasts, where the elegant black exterior, chosen to integrate with the forest, meets the warm, welcoming interior. Expansive panoramic windows offer inhabitants unobstructed views of the jungle, establishing a peaceful refuge from daily life. The black exterior serves as a cool, shaded skin for the building, contrasting with the warmth of the interior. The architects chose a signature use of exposed concrete, balancing its modern aesthetic with the organic, warm wood that dominates the indoor spaces. The incorporation of vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and farm animals contributes to the property's self-sufficiency and deepens its connection to the natural world. A carefully chosen palette of materials reflects both modern design sensibilities and a respect for regional heritage and local talent. The interior is defined by warm wooden decor sourced from the forests of the Osa Peninsula, a material prized for its strength and durability. This creates a cozy, relaxing atmosphere throughout the home. Floors are crafted with intricate mosaics and terrazo tiles, adding an artistic flourish that celebrates the rich cultural traditions of the region. Furniture for the kitchen, bathrooms, and other areas was created by local artisans, showcasing local talent and craftsmanship. • Pleats | The Ranch Mine | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | 'Pleats' is a new 1850 SF, 3 sided courtyard house in the foothills of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The foundation of the original house was reused and the space was redesigned to fit the bedrooms, including a primary suite that was lacking before. A new, gabled volume was added to take in mountain views and provide an indoor-outdoor great room with a perforated metal patio cover to ease the transition from the strong, sunlit exterior to the interior. A garage and workshop is tucked behind the house, completing the 3-sided courtyard. Aesthetically, the exterior of the house adopt elements of the Saguaro Cactus. The house draws its name, 'Pleats,' from the corrugated metal that wraps the gabled volume, reminiscent of the pleated exterior of the cactus. The gabled entry features a patterned, wood rainscreen that evokes the forked ribs of the cactus while the recessed entry is akin to a Saguaro boot, the holes in the giant cacti that many desert animals use as their homes. Before we formed our company back in 2010, we spent 7 months traveling around Arizona, exploring the history of our state. During these trips, a common thread started to emerge: the pioneer spirit. Everywhere we went we heard stories and saw manifestations of the driven, impassioned people, such as ranchers and miners, who were willing to endure hardship in search of a better life. • Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno | Foster + Partners | ZHIG

COMMERCIAL | Office building | Ciudad Casa de Gobierno is a new city hall for Buenos Aires, housing offices for the Mayor and 1,500 employees. Spanning an entire city block in Parque Patricios, the new building contributes to the revitalisation of the neighbourhood and combines an environmentally efficient design with an innovative, highly flexible internal arrangement of terraced office floors. The architecture echoes the building’s park-side setting, with landscaped courtyards and shaded walkways, and uses materials that draw on the site’s industrial past to reinforce the unique character of the area. Entrance is via a soaring four-storey-high atrium. Full-height glazing fills the space with natural light and creates a visual connection with the adjacent park, and four tiers of office levels step back to create a sequence of stepped internal terraces. The office floors are connected by top-lit circulation routes and punctuated by two large landscaped patios. The workspaces are open, the majority are naturally lit and visible, helping to improve communication between departments and promote a sense of community. The generous floor plates are based on an eight-metre grid, which allows for a wide variety of layouts – the building was originally commissioned as the headquarters for Banco Ciudad, and the inherent flexibility of its design has enabled a seamless conversion into government offices. Further facilities include a café and a 300-seat wood-panelled auditorium, which can be used for local events. Designed to make a positive environmental and social impact on the city, the plans form part of a wider regeneration initiative in the barrio of Parque Patricios. Externally, the building is characterised by its flowing roof canopy, which is supported by pillars and extends in a deep overhang to shade the entrance plaza and facades. Inside, the concrete barrel vaulted roof is textured and exposed. The thermal mass of the concrete soffits, combined with chilled beams, helps to naturally regulate the temperature and keep the offices cool. Every aspect of the scheme was designed in response to the local climate, including the composition of each facade – the eastern and western elevations are shaded by a screen of louvres, which rise the full height of the building. In 2017, the building was certified LEED Gold. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_650211df82d841388141ff05e0fee579~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2000,h_1124,al_c,q_90/Buenos%20Aires%20Ciudad%20Casa%20de%20Gobierno%20(1).jfif 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 4.8K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno Uspallata 315O, C1437 JCK, Buenos Aires, Argentina fosterandpartners.com Source: Published on Oct 1, 2023 by: Civil Engineer Rosa Garcia Premium Member More Buildings from Argentina Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Foster + Partners United Kingdom Category: COMMERCIAL Office building Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Argentina Photographers: Architects: Foster + Partners Area: 45,000 m2 Year: 2015 City: Buenos Aires Construction: Client CRIBA S..A.
