HOTELS | Eco-lofts | Nestled in the arid, boulder-strewn terrain of the Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California, Mexico, the Hotel Encuentro Guadalupe is an "antiresort" that seeks to connect guests with the rugged landscape rather than separate them from it. Designed by Tijuana-based architect Jorge Gracia of Graciastudio, the hotel comprises 20 individual, elevated "eco-lofts" that appear to hover over the hillside, offering both privacy and panoramic views of the wine valley. The project was completed in 2011 and is part of a larger, 99-hectare development that includes a winery and a residential area. From its inception, the design philosophy prioritized environmental preservation. To minimize interference with the land, the individual rooms were constructed as steel-framed pods and elevated on stilts, avoiding direct contact with the soil and allowing the local flora and fauna to continue thriving underneath. This "deluxe camping" concept provides guests with modern comforts while maintaining an immersive connection to the natural surroundings. The exterior cladding of the eco-lofts is made of Corten steel, a material chosen for its rust-like appearance, which weathers over time to achieve a color palette that blends harmoniously with the desert environment. The hotel's design embraces minimalism and simplicity, both in its materials and its layout. The interiors are clean and sober, focusing the guest's attention on the dramatic views framed by large windows. Outside, cantilevered decks and strategically placed pools are integrated into the rocky landscape, providing spaces for relaxation and contemplation. The approach to construction was also influenced by local economic and material conditions, with Graciastudio leveraging prefabricated construction techniques and locally available materials to realize the project efficiently. Built on a budget of just $20,000, the residence was constructed entirely by its owners and a team of friends in the "New England barn-raising" spirit. The house features a design that minimizes its impact on the steep, wooded site, creating the illusion that it floats among the trees. To achieve this "floating" effect, the structure uses a hybrid anchoring system. The upslope side of the cabin is supported by standard concrete footings, while the other side is suspended from two existing trees using a specialized treehouse fastener system called Garnier Limbs. This approach not only saved money by avoiding expensive foundations and retaining walls but also minimized site disturbance. The aesthetic of the Half-Tree House is characterized by a strong contrast between its exterior and interior. The exterior is clad with timber milled from Eastern Pines that were felled on the property. This wood was then treated with traditional Scandinavian pine tar, giving the cabin a dark, weather-resistant facade that blends into the forest. Inside, the walls and ceiling are painted white, and the floor is sealed with a clear, matte coat, creating a bright and minimalist space. The single-room interior is flooded with natural light and air via three large, 8-by-8-foot steel-tube pivot doors that also feature dual-insulated glass. For the colder New York winters, the space is heated by an efficient Jotul wood stove. The cabin has no piped water or electricity, with power coming from a portable generator if needed, reinforcing its identity as a remote and self-reliant getaway. Built on a budget of just $20,000, the residence was constructed entirely by its owners and a team of friends in the "New England barn-raising" spirit. The house features a design that minimizes its impact on the steep, wooded site, creating the illusion that it floats among the trees. To achieve this "floating" effect, the structure uses a hybrid anchoring system. The upslope side of the cabin is supported by standard concrete footings, while the other side is suspended from two existing trees using a specialized treehouse fastener system called Garnier Limbs. This approach not only saved money by avoiding expensive foundations and retaining walls but also minimized site disturbance. The aesthetic of the Half-Tree House is characterized by a strong contrast between its exterior and interior. The exterior is clad with timber milled from Eastern Pines that were felled on the property. This wood was then treated with traditional Scandinavian pine tar, giving the cabin a dark, weather-resistant facade that blends into the forest. Inside, the walls and ceiling are painted white, and the floor is sealed with a clear, matte coat, creating a bright and minimalist space. The single-room interior is flooded with natural light and air via three large, 8-by-8-foot steel-tube pivot doors that also feature dual-insulated glass. For the colder New York winters, the space is heated by an efficient Jotul wood stove. The cabin has no piped water or electricity, with power coming from a portable generator if needed, reinforcing its identity as a remote and self-reliant getaway. RESIDENTIAL | Modular House | Located in Olst, the Netherlands, the Sprout Ruben & Marjolein is a bio-based, compact home created by Amsterdam-based studio Woonpioniers. Completed as a prototype for the studio's flexible and transportable Sprout concept, the house was developed for actual clients Ruben and Marjolein. The design is based on a prefabricated, modular system that can be lengthened, shortened, or stacked, with the specific build in Olst comprising a two-story volume topped with a mono-pitched roof and an open, greenhouse-like volume. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Skatehouse 2, designed by Argentine architect Macu Bulgubure and completed in 2021, is an off-grid cabin built for a skateboarder in the wild wetlands of the Paraná River near Rosario, Argentina. Situated in a flood-prone area, the structure is elevated on stilts for protection from rising waters and to allow services to be delivered off-grid. The cabin's design cleverly integrates a large skate ramp, which was originally planned as a separate structure, into its exterior, forming a curved, elevated deck. Beyond its function as a skating area, this curve also serves a dual purpose by providing shade for the interior from the high summer sun. Situated in a flood-prone area, the structure is elevated on stilts for protection from rising waters and to allow services to be delivered off-grid. The cabin's design cleverly integrates a large skate ramp, which was originally planned as a separate structure, into its exterior, forming a curved, elevated deck. Beyond its function as a skating area, this curve also serves a dual purpose by providing shade for the interior from the high summer sun. The 76-square-meter cabin was constructed using a steel frame with locally sourced, treated eucalyptus and galvanized steel sheets, providing a durable exterior that stayed within budget. Inside, the two-story layout features a double-height living room with a wood-burning stove on the lower level, a kitchen, and a dining area, while a lightweight hanging staircase leads to a bedroom and bathroom on the upper floor. The interior is clad in wood veneer, creating a warm contrast with the steel frame. The house is entirely self-sufficient, with electricity provided by photovoltaic solar panels, water supplied by a combination of rainwater harvesting and the river, a solar-powered tank for hot water, and a biodigester for sewage treatment. With its unique, function-driven design and eco-conscious features, Skatehouse 2 stands as a highly personalized and sustainable home nestled in the remote Argentinian wetlands. The design is a study in contrasts, merging traditional mountain architecture with contemporary aesthetics through its distinctive dual-volume structure. The house is composed of two main sections, each defined by a different material and texture. One volume is clad in near-black timber shingles, referencing original mountain homes and housing the sheltered porch and entrance, as well as a bedroom above. The other volume features a smooth white ceramic surface and contains the combined living, dining, and kitchen area. A large picture window on the south side of the white volume creates a strong connection between the interior and the idyllic pine forest and hilly terrain outside. The interior maintains a minimalist aesthetic, allowing the focus to remain on the large window and the surrounding landscape. The design and construction process was constrained by a relatively low budget and the site's inaccessibility, which led the architects to create an architecture of simple, robust gestures using locally available materials like pine wood from nearby forests. RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | Located in Biddeford, Maine, the Hills Beach home was a renovation project by architects and builders Woodhull, completed for founder Caleb Johnson's own family. Rather than demolishing the original "beach shack," the team embarked on a thoughtful transformation that respected the structure's origins and the coastal neighborhood. The project revitalized the home with locally sourced materials and handcrafted elements, creating a unique and character-filled home. The small, 850-square-foot footprint required maximizing every detail and space. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the home features a material palette of natural wood, stone, concrete, and glass. Unpainted plaster was left to highlight the patina of reused materials.
