RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Guayabamba Cabin is a micro-architecture project located in the rural parish of Guayllabamba, Ecuador, an hour outside the city of Quito. Completed in 2021 by Quito-based architectural firm Rama Estudio, the cabin is a small, 33-square-meter wooden structure designed to blend into its surroundings while prioritizing sustainability and a connection with nature. Constructed with wood and a traditional Latin American technique called bahareque, which uses earth, straw, and wood, the cabin was designed with the intention of reclaiming local construction practices. This approach not only strengthens its connection to the land but also optimizes resources through material experimentation. The building is clad in small wooden panels, which give the structure a simple and timeless aesthetic. A central outdoor space and an elevated platform for the cabin allow it to connect seamlessly with the landscape and offer peaceful views of the lush green fields. The cabin was designed as a "hospitality" project, with a focus on creating a sustainable and adaptable retreat. This focus is part of Rama Estudio's broader architectural philosophy, which centers on sensitive approaches to natural context and resource optimization. Commissioned to create an efficient and resilient cabin, the firm responded to the site's challenging conditions and strict local building regulations by creating a design that is both practical and iconic. The central design challenge came from the high altitude, harsh weather, and strict local regulations, which dictate specific requirements for materials, roof pitch (22–27 degrees), and window sections. Rather than viewing these limitations as obstacles, head architect Grethe Løland used them as a source of creative inspiration, stating, "Limitations are the mother of all playful creativity". The cabin's defining characteristic is its large, protective hood-like roof, which shelters the entrance and the main facade from the elements. The roof is clad in ore pine paneling, which stands in geometric contrast to the main black-painted timber body of the cabin. The exterior features a mix of black and natural pine, creating a strong visual identity that stands out in the otherwise traditional landscape. The clean, angular lines give the cabin a modern, sculptural feel, even while adhering to strict traditional building codes. Large, sectioned windows on the front facade frame magnificent views of the surrounding lake and mountains, connecting the interior with the rugged landscape. Despite its rugged exterior, the interior of the 66-square-meter cabin (plus a 7-square-meter attic) is cozy and efficiently designed to accommodate up to 12 people. A warm, neutral palette of wood is used throughout the floors and walls, accented by touches of black. This creates a serene and inviting atmosphere. The cabin includes an open kitchen and dining area, a master bedroom, a bathroom, and a sauna that ingeniously doubles as a guest sleeping area. An additional attic space offers further sleeping accommodation for guests. Large glass sliding doors and corner windows enhance the feeling of space and bring the stunning outdoor scenery into the living areas. HOSPITALITY | Modular Cabin | In collaboration with the Lithuanian company Konga Cabins, Danish hospitality architect Mette Fredskild has designed the Konga cabin, a series of off-grid and modular tiny homes built with sustainability and a close relationship with nature in mind. The cabins are prefabricated in Lithuania and designed for easy assembly, allowing them to be installed on-site in as little as one day without a specific foundation. This makes them highly adaptable and suitable for remote getaways, resorts, or even as backyard houses. Drawing on Fredskild's experience designing hotels, the Konga cabins blend hotel-level comfort with an immersive outdoor experience. The design focuses on Scandinavian simplicity and minimalism, using a compact footprint to create a functional and inviting space. The interior layout, while minimalist, is thoughtfully designed to maximize space and includes essential amenities, a kitchen, and a sleeping area. RESIDENTIAL | House | Zilvar House is a modern, energy-efficient wooden retreat designed by the Prague-based studio ASGK Design for a family seeking escape from urban life. Located on the outskirts of a village in Eastern Bohemia, Czech Republic, the compact and open-plan house is surrounded by fields, meadows, and forests. The house's unique and organic design was inspired by the client's four-year-old son, who imagined a building with an anthropomorphic shape that leaned towards the impressive oak tree on the property. Taking cues from this imaginative vision and the local microclimate, ASGK Design created a house that constantly interacts with its natural surroundings. Completed in 2013, the house has a larch timber-framed structure and is built on a pile foundation, raising it slightly off the ground. The elongated, single-story form features a pent roof that angles toward the oak tree. The facade, interior, and roof are clad in larch boards. To increase durability against the region's strong winds and rain, the exterior wood underwent a "burn and stain" process. The interior features lighter, natural wood finishes. Designed as a low-energy house, Zilvar utilizes a "diffusion-open" wall assembly that allows moisture to pass through the structure, eliminating the need for a plastic vapor barrier. A wood-burning stove and radiant floor heating provide warmth. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors blur the line between the indoors and outdoors, creating the illusion of a larger space. Same wooden flooring is used both inside and on the eastern terrace, creating a seamless connection to the garden. Large sliding wooden shutters provide shade from the summer sun while allowing winter solar gain. Sheltered outdoor areas are strategically placed at the northern entrance and eastern terrace to provide protection from the elements year-round. The ground floor contains an open-plan living area with a kitchenette and dining space. Two raised galleries at opposite ends of the house, accessed by industrial-style staircases, serve as bedrooms. Designed as a low-energy house, Zilvar utilizes a "diffusion-open" wall assembly that allows moisture to pass through the structure, eliminating the need for a plastic vapor barrier. A wood-burning stove and radiant floor heating provide warmth. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors blur the line between the indoors and outdoors, creating the illusion of a larger space. Same wooden flooring is used both inside and on the eastern terrace, creating a seamless connection to the garden. Large sliding wooden shutters provide shade from the summer sun while allowing winter solar gain. Sheltered outdoor areas are strategically placed at the northern entrance and eastern terrace to provide protection from the elements year-round. The ground floor contains an open-plan living area with a kitchenette and dining space. Two raised galleries at opposite ends of the house, accessed by industrial-style staircases, serve as bedrooms. RESIDENTIAL | House | The bathhouse appears as a traditional small sea stall with red-painted cladding, tin roofs and stands on granite columns down into the water. This is what the first impression gives - especially when coming from the road at the back - where the building seems closed and modest. While it slides well into cultural-historical diversity, it makes assumptions about a twist. Looking better, you notice that several of the cladding tables are angled, so that they close the building to the back and open to the front. If you come in you experience the purpose - you are shielded while having access to the whole sea. The bathhouse rests on a galvanized steel frame that stands on two granite columns and a concrete base at the rear. The building is designed to fit into the environment without sticking out too much while having a modern design language. This is solved by working with the building as a volume of scarce details instead of surfaces such as roof and wall. The materials are treated with the same color to enhance the experience of the volume. The materials consist of solid wood floors and ceilings and a room with toilet at the back with walls of solid wood that stiffen the construction. In the main room, the traditional stonework structure has been removed and replaced by thicker cladding tables angled 45° carrying the ceiling. Between each cladding table are mounted narrow transparent acrylic panels. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Hempcrete House is a compact, sustainable off-grid dwelling designed by Altereco Design and completed in 2023. Located in the alpine-adjacent town of Lyonville, Central Victoria, Australia, the house serves as a prototype for energy-efficient living using hempcrete, a carbon-negative material. The house embraces a "just enough" design philosophy with a small 75-square-meter footprint. This provides a functional and beautiful living space that emphasizes elegant simplicity. The main construction material consists of 300mm-thick walls of hempcrete (a mix of hemp hurd, lime, and water). The hempcrete provides excellent thermal insulation, resists fire, mold, and pests, and offers a natural, earthy texture. The home is oriented to the north to maximize solar gain during the cold winters. Wide eaves are used to shade the interior from the sun during the summer. Polished concrete floors and internal hempcrete walls absorb and release heat to help regulate the internal temperature. Natural ventilation: Operable clerestory windows create a "chimney effect" to naturally cool and ventilate the home in summer. The floor plan includes an airlock entry, bathroom, kitchen, and open-plan living/dining area on the ground floor. A mezzanine level accommodates the bedroom. Climate control: Despite experiencing sub-zero temperatures, the home can maintain a comfortable indoor temperature of 20°C (68°F) without using additional heating. Sustainability and performance The all-electric home is powered by a 5.2kW solar PV system located on an adjacent shed. A rainwater harvesting and filtration system collects water in large repurposed wine vats. The wastewater is treated with a biological worm farm system. The hemp used in construction sequesters carbon from the atmosphere during its growth. When combined with lime, the material continues to harden and sequester carbon throughout the building's lifespan. The project minimized waste through careful planning and by using reclaimed materials. Only two small trailer loads of waste went to a landfill. Reclaimed Messmate timber was used for the upstairs flooring, shelving, kitchen cupboards, and other trim. HOSPITALITY | Lodge | Located amid a pine forest in the Poltava region of Ukraine, the Guest Houses in Relax Park Verholy were designed by the Kyiv-based firm YOD Group. The project is an ongoing collaboration, with different versions of the guest houses, such as Guest Houses 3.0 and Chalet 4.0, completed in 2019 and 2016, respectively. The overarching concept is to provide a secluded, modernist escape where guests can feel closely connected to the surrounding nature. The guest houses are constructed using a prefabricated, lightweight metal frame. To minimize environmental impact on the pine forest, they are not built on traditional solid foundations but on a screw-base system. This technology allows the structures to be positioned quickly and without damaging trees or their root systems. The buildings are also elevated above the ground, which assists with waterproofing. The exterior cladding consists of heat-treated wood, which not only provides weather protection but also reflects the natural surroundings with its dark, sleek appearance. Inside, the interior design is minimalist and emphasizes natural materials, such as timber and stone, to extend the forest atmosphere into the living spaces. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic glazing further integrate the interior with the surrounding pine trees. Guest House 3.0 features a cozy patio to enhance privacy, while Chalet 4.0 includes a terrace that runs the length of the property, connecting two separate bedrooms with a shared living space. The interiors often incorporate design elements with a modern, eco-friendly approach, such as walls covered in rhythmic veneer lines that symbolize the surrounding pine trees and the use of cow skin as a nod to forest animals.
