The modest, modular, and solar-powered structure is positioned on a hilly, forested terrain to capture distant views of the Pacific Ocean and optimize passive solar gains. The house is organized into three separate volumes connected by a central circulation space. This longitudinal layout follows the slope of the site, with "cuts" between the volumes allowing for north-south sightlines across the property. The three modules accommodate distinct programmatic functions: Public area: Contains the open-plan living room, kitchen, and dining area. Children's private area: Houses the children's bedrooms. Adults' private area: Contains the master bedroom. A west-facing terrace runs along the length of the house, providing a direct connection to the outdoors from all three modules. A broken gable roof structure envelops the three volumes, creating a unified form that dialogues with the existing terrain. Located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada, it is the smallest of several cabins on a family-owned property. It is tucked into the treeline on a steep slope, providing a quiet escape from the main, multi-generational family cottages below. The cabin reinterprets the traditional A-frame design with two intersecting, offset gables that create distinct volumes and elevations. This split-roof design, inspired by the layered shale rock formations found in the area, allows for carefully placed window openings that offer curated views of the forest and the lake. The design emphasizes both a strong connection to nature and a commitment to sustainability. The exterior features greyed wood siding and natural cedar soffits, which are intended to patina over time and blend further into the rustic landscape. The foundation consists of board-formed concrete that sits lightly on the existing rock contours, avoiding any need for invasive blasting. Inside, the home is functional despite its compact size, with built-in storage and benches. A variety of FSC-rated wood species line the interior, including oak flooring, maple plywood partitions, and Western red cedar slats for the ceiling, which echo the surrounding forest. The interior perimeter walls are clad in white wallboard. The home's layout features a main living area with a fireplace and a kitchen on the lower level, a bedroom with a large window and forest views at the rear, and an upper loft with a built-in desk and extra sleeping space. The large, geometric windows frame views, flood the interior with natural light, and create dramatic angular shadows that change throughout the day. In the evening, the warmly lit cedar interior transforms the cabin into a glowing lantern among the trees. RESIDENTIAL | House | Situated on a narrow, triangular plot of land in the Horinouchi neighborhood of Suginami, Tokyo, the House in Horinouchi is a small, two-story residence designed by Mizuishi Architects Atelier for a couple and their daughter. Completed in 2011, the project is a testament to resourceful Japanese design, making ingenious use of a confined site nestled between a river and a road. The home's unusual shape is a direct response to the plot's acute angle, with the structure's volume pushing the boundaries of the permitted building envelope. The exterior is clad in metallic brown panels, creating a solid and distinct form with a cantilevered second floor that provides a small, sheltered parking space underneath. Despite its compact size of just 55.2 square meters (595 square feet) over two floors, plus a mezzanine loft, the interior feels more spacious than its footprint suggests. A "reverse" floor plan places the main living spaces on the second floor to take advantage of natural light and views over the adjacent river promenade. Large windows on both sides of the living area, including one that opens to a narrow balcony, frame long sightlines that extend the visual length of the house. The project is situated within a forest just outside the city, overlooking the Simpson River and the Mackay hill. Its architecture is rooted in the traditional constructions of Southern Chile, which are adapted to withstand the region's harsh climate of frequent snow, rain, and cold. The house was designed with a pure, simple volume and built with local materials to accommodate a tight budget and limited local labor and technology. To protect the structure from ground moisture and cold, the house is elevated on wooden piles. Its exterior is sheathed in black zinc sheets, providing a hermetic shield against the arduous weather. In contrast, the interior is clad entirely in grooved pine plywood, creating a warm, cozy, and rustic atmosphere. The house is strategically designed to maximize its connection with the surrounding nature. It is more enclosed toward the access, but the side facing the views opens up completely through large windows that lead to a generous wooden deck. The main floor features an open living space that includes the main living room, an open kitchen, six built-in bunk beds, a guest bathroom, and a suite. A second level offers a wide open floor plan with a balcony overlooking the scenery. A staircase also doubles as an interior resting space and provides access to the terrace.
