The lookout was conceived as a multi-purpose building, serving as a hunting blind, a writing studio, and an observation deck that provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country. It is intentionally nestled below a limestone cliff edge, requiring it to be "discovered" by those approaching from the top of the mesa. The design is a celebration of simple materials and low-tech methods, with a focus on artistry and craftsmanship. To contrast with the ranch's more traditional Hill Country vernacular, the lookout features a modern form and was constructed with naturally weathering steel, also known as Cor-Ten steel. This choice was inspired by the owner's past, which included welding oil tanks, and allows the structure to age naturally and blend in with the surrounding terrain. Inside, the rough exterior gives way to a softer palette, with plain walls, wooden ceilings, and large floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with light and frame the views. RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Designed by Paulo Martins ARQ&DESIGN, the SH House is a compact, two-story weekend retreat located in Sever do Vouga, Portugal. Completed in 2016, the project involved the renovation of an existing stone house, which was originally built in a pastoral countryside setting. The architect's key intervention was the integration of contemporary minimalist design elements while preserving the structure's historical stone walls. The house has a total floor area of 45 square meters. On the ground floor, the social areas—a small kitchen, dining area, and living space—enjoy a direct connection with the surrounding outdoor areas. A weathering steel (corten) staircase, which also incorporates storage, divides the two floors and adds a striking modern contrast to the old stone walls. The upstairs contains a bedroom and bathroom, offering privacy and scenic views of the landscape. Throughout the interior, a minimalist aesthetic and light colors are used to create a sense of spaciousness and openness, maximizing the perception of the compact volume. RESIDENTIAL | housing | he corporate pavilion for Vanke China explores key issues related to the theme of the Expo Milano 2015, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. The concept for the Vanke Pavilion incorporates three ideas drawn from Chinese culture related to food: the shi-tang, a traditional Chinese dining hall; the landscape, the fundamental element to life; and the dragon, which is metaphorically related to farming and sustenance. All three of these concepts are incorporated in the Vanke Pavilion’s exhibition, architecture and program. Situated on the southeast edge of the Lake Arena, the 800-square meter pavilion appears to rise from the east, forming a dynamic, vertical landscape. The design features a sinuous geometrical pattern that flows between inside and outside. A grand staircase, clad in warm grey concrete, carves through the red serpentine form and guides visitors to the upper level. A roof-top observation deck with a planted garden will provide stunning views of the lake and near-by Italian pavilion. The pavilion is clad in more than 4,000 red metalized tiles that Libeskind designed with the Italian company Casalgrande Padana. The geometric ceramic panels not only create an expressive pattern that is evocative of a dragon-like skin, but also possess highly sustainable self-cleaning and air purification properties. The three-dimensional surface is coated with a metallic coloration that changes as light and viewpoints shift. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Studio | The Nook is a 568-square-foot backyard retreat and multi-purpose studio located in central Texas, which was designed and built by Isaac French for his own use and completed in 2023. Serving as a private office, art studio, and guest quarters, the structure was purposefully built on a pier-and-beam foundation, allowing it to be moved over short distances should the need arise. The design of The Nook is a unique fusion of Japanese, Scandinavian, and Texan aesthetics, with a strong focus on connecting the compact interior with the surrounding natural forest environment. For its exterior, The Nook is clad in charred cedar, a Japanese-inspired technique known as Shou Sugi Ban, chosen for both its durability and its aesthetic. This dark material contrasts with the rich white oak finishes used throughout the interior, which create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Local Texas limestone was also incorporated to anchor the design and further tie the structure to its immediate environment. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and ample glass are used strategically to blur the lines between inside and out, filling the space with natural light. Inside, the compact space is organized efficiently to feel much larger than its footprint suggests. It includes a 107-square-foot sleeping loft, along with a kitchenette, a full bathroom, and a workspace designed to be a sanctuary for creativity. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail ensure that every element is optimized for function, efficiency, and pristine form. Following the project's completion, French made professionally drafted construction plans available for purchase, enabling others to build their own versions of The Nook. Following the project's completion, French made professionally drafted construction plans available for purchase, enabling others to build their own versions of The Nook. CULTURAL | Science museum | Construction has been completed on the Binhai Science Museum (formerly The Modern City and Industrial Exploratorium of Tianjin Binhai New Area Culture Center), a 33,000-square-meter (355,200-square-foot) museum structure in Tianjin, China. Designed in 2013-2014, the Binhai Science Museum is set to open in Fall 2019. The institution will showcase artifacts from Tianjin’s industrial past through large-scale contemporary technology, including spectacular rockets for space research. The project is part of the city’s Binhai Cultural Center and contains facilities for cultural events and exhibitions as well as galleries, offices, and restaurant and retail spaces. Bernard Tschumi Architects designed the Binhai Science Museum to relate to the rich industrial history of the area, the site of high-volume manufacturing and research. A series of large-scale cones creates major rooms throughout the museum. The central cone, lit from above, connects all three levels of the building. A spiralling ramp ascends to the top level, offering an unusual spatial experience of the modern vertical city by reinterpreting an ancient industrial typology. Conceived as a simple, low-impact summer retreat for a Parisian couple, the house stands elevated on removable steel foundations. This approach provides a sharp contrast to the area's traditional stone houses and draws inspiration from the lightweight, post-and-beam Case Study Houses of 1960s California. The house is designed to have minimal impact on its landscape, offering the flexibility to be fully disassembled and relocated without leaving a trace. The design is both modern and reverent of its natural setting. The house is bioclimatic, designed to use natural principles to manage its internal climate. The almost-square, timber-clad volume is elevated on slender, removable steel foundations. This design creates a large, raised wooden deck that wraps around the south side of the home, providing several seating areas with dramatic views over the valley. The elevated design ensures the house sits lightly on the land. Architect Alphonse Sarthout noted that the owners could theoretically take the house with them in 50 years if they chose to. The house is designed to be naturally ventilated. Openings are strategically placed on the east and west to capture cross breezes, aiding in cooling the interior during warmer months. A large, cantilevered roof overhang provides generous shading to the south-facing glazing, further controlling solar gain. The interior is arranged in an L-shape, creating an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area with full-height glazing that connects the inside with the landscape. The material palette is simple, sustainable, and designed to create a calm, naturalistic atmosphere. The house is clad in blackened Douglas fir, a sustainable local material chosen to contrast with the traditional stone homes of the region. The house rests on removable screw piles, a ground-friendly foundation system that allows the structure to be uninstalled without significant earthwork. Interior walls are made from Fermacell, a fiber gypsum board made from recycled materials. The floor is made from calcium sulfate, a recyclable and insulating material widely used in Europe. Kitchen and storage units feature simple spruce plywood with integrated cut-out drawer pulls instead of hardware, enhancing the minimalist aesthetic. Large windows and strategically placed openings frame views of the surrounding larch forest, filtering light into the interior throughout the day. The living area is organized around a central hearth, with a visible and connected spa area that is also accessible from the large south-facing terrace. This provides a unique alpine experience for guests. The cabins are clad in dark, charred wood cladding, which echoes the color of the larch tree bark and helps the structures blend into their environment. The cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure is insulated with blown-in cellulose wadding and clad with rough-sawn wood strips painted with black Falun-style paint, a durable Swedish pigment. The large fixed window in the corner seating nook offers pastoral scenery, while a western bay window can be opened to extend the main room onto the terrace, blurring the line between inside and outside. Upstairs, the four sleeping areas are designed like small cabins. Each features small, eye-level windows that provide views of the landscape for those lying down and can accommodate two single beds, with a built-in bench on one side and a storage area on the other. Inspired by the historic Château while designed for contemporary life, the house is a single, monolithic volume wrapped in thick, weather-resistant wood that contrasts with the smooth, lighter finish of its interior. A fluid internal space is arranged around a central core, with an "interior topography" of varied heights creating distinct functional zones and offering a variety of possible spatial configurations. The interior features a ramp that doubles as a sofa, and different levels for sitting, cooking, and sleeping help to maximize the compact footprint. A covered terrace is located under the higher-level sleeping area. The project showcases a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Untreated chestnut trees that had been previously felled on the castle grounds were processed at a local sawmill using CNC machines. This allowed for a short supply chain and the use of locally sourced materials. The entire structure is elevated off the ground on water-resistant acacia wood piles, allowing it to mimic the surrounding forest environment. All structural elements were prefabricated off-site for rapid assembly, with the cladding cut on-site. The exterior will develop a natural silvery-gray patina over time. The 100% Wooden House is part of an educational promenade in the Château park, feeding on ongoing research and experimentation with wood as a building material. The name O_CASELLA is a play on the word "casella," which means "little box" or "shelter" in Corsican, reflecting the cabin's functional and minimalist nature. The design of O_CASELLA is based on two distinct, yet connected, modular volumes: a living module and a pergola. This structure addresses the demands of the warm Mediterranean climate by creating large, shaded areas for outdoor living. To minimize cost and environmental impact on the remote site, the entire cabin was prefabricated in a wood workshop. The modules were then transported fully assembled to the location, significantly reducing on-site construction time and disruption. The closed living module contains the kitchen, bathroom, and a flexible living/sleeping area. It provides framed views of the surrounding wild Corsican mountains and sea through large windows.
