ACCOMMODATIONS | Retreat | The Gilay Estate is a 40 m², off-grid luxury accommodation designed by Cameron Anderson Architects (CAARCH). Located in Quirindi, New South Wales, Australia, the project was completed in 2024 and is available for short-term stays. The estate is a minimalist, single-story retreat that honors the local landscape and incorporates sustainable, self-sufficient features. The name "Gilay" is the Gomeroi word for moon, a detail that reflects the design team's consultation with a local Aboriginal Elder during the process. The structure features a distinctive, sloping sheet metal roof with deep overhangs that protect the building from the harsh Australian sun. This roof form echoes the simple silhouette of a tent or shed, lending a humble, earthy feel. The exterior is clad in charred timber, a nod to the traditional Indigenous practice of fire management and regeneration. The interior uses warm, natural timber, symbolizing regrowth. The 40 m² interior is largely open-plan, with the king-sized bed integrated into the main living space to maximize the experience of the panoramic views. Large double-glazed windows and a curved cutaway in the roof are strategically placed to frame spectacular views of the Liverpool Plains, the nearby mountain ranges, and the sky for moon-gazing. The Gilay Estate was designed for full off-grid functionality and self-sufficiency. A 6.4-kW rooftop solar array with an 11.4-kW battery provides all of the building's energy. A 60,000-liter tank collects 100% of the rainwater needed for the accommodation. Strategic glazing and generous roof overhangs minimize heat gain from the summer sun. The project also incorporates greywater systems and native landscaping, further cementing its low-impact approach. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Andina Patagónica #4 is a 65-square-meter cabin designed by forma Architecture in El Bolsón, Argentina, a location characterized by its Patagonian vegetation. Completed in 2019, the project is situated on a slope with views towards Cerro Piltriquitron. The architecture is adapted to the natural incline of the terrain, allowing the house to step down in a way that maximizes the panoramic vista. The cabin's design emphasizes efficiency and sustainability. A 2-foot by 2-foot grid system was used to modularize the construction, which reduced material waste and enabled a quicker build time. A substantial northern overhang was incorporated to passively protect the interior from the sun, while cross-ventilation provides a natural cooling mechanism. For the interior, full sheets of pine plywood were used to create a cozy, cabin-like feel, showcasing the modularity of the construction. The exterior material choices included charred wood, utilizing the Shou Sugi Ban technique on the north and south walls for weather protection, and black corrugated metal for the roof, east, and west walls. Half of the cabin rests on a concrete slab, providing thermal mass for regulating interior temperatures. Recycled cellulose was used for insulation. Created as a vacation home for an elderly couple who often visit Daegu, the project provides a comfortable and familiar space for them and their visiting family. The house is situated on an elevated eastern side of the plot to maximize yard space on the western side, which faces a public park. The design is notable for its dynamic, sloping roof, which was chosen to both prevent leaks and create an open, airy interior. Faced with the necessity of felling seven century-old oak trees on their estate near 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, architects Annemariken Hilberink and Geert Bosch made the decision to repurpose the ailing timber themselves rather than selling it to a paper factory. This resourceful approach led to the construction of a new multi-purpose barn adjacent to their studio, which is housed in a converted farmhouse. The design of the Sixteen-Oak Barn draws inspiration from the traditional farmhouses of the Meierij region, which historically incorporated various functions into a single structure. The architects made use of every part of the felled oak trees, supplemented by a couple of additional oaks from the nearby Wamberg estate. A mobile sawmill was brought to the site to cut the best-quality core sections of the trunks into structural timber for the frames, roof, and façade. The asymmetrical roof, which features a steep and a low-pitched side, was covered with durable shingles made from smaller sections of oak. The rough-hewn exterior siding was created using pieces of timber with the bark still attached, which gives the façade a textured, organic appearance. The project also embraces the imperfections found in the materials, including marks left by remnants of barbed wire and shrapnel embedded in the old trees, which add to the building's character. The remaining waste wood was chopped and set aside for use as firewood to heat the building during colder months. The barn itself is a blend of rustic and modern aesthetics, incorporating a minimal palette of natural materials: oak, concrete, and glass. Inside, the exposed timber frame is paired with board-formed concrete walls, creating surfaces with unique patterns left by the sapwood used for the forms. RESIDENTIAL | House | Lyons House by Moloney Architects is a contemporary renovation and addition to an existing Federation-era home in central Ballarat, Victoria. Designed for a downsizing couple, the project transforms the formerly dark and disconnected house into a light-filled, energy-efficient home with a strong connection to its garden. The design balances respect for the original home's architectural character with the requirements of modern, accessible living. The design strategy clearly contrasts the new and old by distinguishing between the original double-story home and a low, horizontal extension. The new addition is defined by a shallow, floating roof and is linked to the existing house via a narrow hallway flanked by courtyards. These courtyards pull natural light into the original structure's rooms, which had previously been dark. The interior of the extension features a minimalist material palette of black steel, exposed timber beams, and plywood. This combination creates a sense of warmth and texture while emphasizing the contrast with the exposed structure. The timber, specifically Tasmanian Oak for the beams and Maxi Panel Baltic Birch plywood for the ceilings and walls, adds natural warmth and connects the indoor and outdoor spaces. Large windows and a halo of high-level windows separate the roof from the walls, allowing low winter sun to penetrate deep into the space and warm the polished concrete floors. The roof overhangs are strategically designed to block the summer sun, ensuring thermal comfort year-round. HOSPITALITY | Lodge | Located amid a pine forest in the Poltava region of Ukraine, the Guest Houses in Relax Park Verholy were designed by the Kyiv-based firm YOD Group. The project is an ongoing collaboration, with different versions of the guest houses, such as Guest Houses 3.0 and Chalet 4.0, completed in 2019 and 2016, respectively. The overarching concept is to provide a secluded, modernist escape where guests can feel closely connected to the surrounding nature. The guest houses are constructed using a prefabricated, lightweight metal frame. To minimize environmental impact on the pine forest, they are not built on traditional solid foundations but on a screw-base system. This technology allows the structures to be positioned quickly and without damaging trees or their root systems. The buildings are also elevated above the ground, which assists with waterproofing. The exterior cladding consists of heat-treated wood, which not only provides weather protection but also reflects the natural surroundings with its dark, sleek appearance. Inside, the interior design is minimalist and emphasizes natural materials, such as timber and stone, to extend the forest atmosphere into the living spaces. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic glazing further integrate the interior with the surrounding pine trees. The project is an ongoing collaboration, with different versions of the guest houses, such as Guest Houses 3.0 and Chalet 4.0, completed in 2019 and 2016, respectively. The overarching concept is to provide a secluded, modernist escape where guests can feel closely connected to the surrounding nature. The guest houses are constructed using a prefabricated, lightweight metal frame. To minimize environmental impact on the pine forest, they are not built on traditional solid foundations but on a screw-base system. This technology allows the structures to be positioned quickly and without damaging trees or their root systems. The buildings are also elevated above the ground, which assists with waterproofing. The exterior cladding consists of heat-treated wood, which not only provides weather protection but also reflects the natural surroundings with its dark, sleek appearance. Inside, the interior design is minimalist and emphasizes natural materials, such as timber and stone, to extend the forest atmosphere into the living spaces. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic glazing further integrate the interior with the surrounding pine trees. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Located in a rainforest near the city of La Unión in southern Chile, the 3x3 Retreat is a 15-square-meter minimalist cabin designed by Estudio Diagonal. Completed in 2020, the small house is named for its 3-by-3-meter floor plan, which emphasizes a "radical geometry" in contrast with the organic nature of its surroundings. The retreat was strategically placed on a slope overlooking the Radimadi river, providing inhabitants with picturesque views and the calming sound of the running water. The cabin's program is structured in what the architects describe as "three acts". The journey begins on the ground-level terrace, which is the same size as the cabin itself, and serves as an intermediary space between the forest and the interior. The first floor, or "day floor," contains a combined kitchen, dining, and living area. A large, double-height window on the front provides a stunning view of the rainforest, making it a perfect spot to observe the winter rains while enjoying a coffee by the wood stove. The second floor, or "private floor," is reached by a ladder to save space and enhance privacy. This level houses the sleeping area and a bathroom. Construction prioritized both budget and sustainability, using standard, pre-dimensioned pine wood and leveraging local labor and traditional building techniques. The structural framework is left exposed on the interior, celebrating the construction process.
