RECREATIONAL | Cabin | Utrecht Cabin, or Recreational House, is a 40-square-meter contemporary cottage in a rural area north of Utrecht, Netherlands. Completed around 2014, the cabin was a collaboration between Zecc Architecten and interior designer Roel van Norel. It is built on the footprint of a former greenhouse and offers a serene getaway for the owners. The cabin features an asymmetrical gable roof clad in slate stone, with a chimney. The exterior combines a largely closed side with one that is highly adaptable, featuring movable horizontal shutters made of Western Red Cedar. When closed, these shutters blend seamlessly with the building's facade, offering privacy and a homogenous appearance. When open, they reveal a full glass wall, connecting the interior with the surrounding woods and a grassy clearing. The interior of the tiny house is defined by fine wood craftsmanship and clever use of space. All facilities—including the kitchen, wood stove, bathroom, and storage—are integrated into a single, handmade oak wall. The space is divided into a front living and dining area and a rear bedroom and bath. A sliding wooden panel can separate these sections for greater privacy. Above the rear section, a mezzanine provides extra sleeping space. Light enters through the full glass wall and a vertical window in the bedroom that extends to the roof's ridgeline. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Jewell Box, a collaborative design by Mell Lawrence Architects and Citizen Artist, is a multifunctional guest house and retreat nestled among Austin, Texas's live oak trees. Designed for a client who wanted a "cabin in the woods," the 1,100-square-foot structure serves as an escape, a place of play, and a space for guests. Its compact, solid street-facing exterior, clad in timber, provides privacy, while the interior and rear facades open up completely to embrace the lush natural landscape and creek below. Maximizing the connection to its surroundings, the design is flanked by two large live oak trees that provide natural shade. The architects incorporated large, double-height steel and glass doors that fill the home with natural light and expand the main living space into the outdoors. The interior features a double-height living and dining area, with the kitchen and bathroom integrated discreetly into a back wall, keeping the central space open and airy. A lofted bedroom, offering a "treehouse feel," overlooks the living area and opens onto a screened porch nestled among the tree branches. The interior palette combines a contemporary architectural shell with warm, curated details inspired by European craft. Materials like sandy blonde timber, blue and ochre tiles, and linen curtains soften the transition between the sleek exterior and the inviting interior. Found objects and collected treasures brought back from Europe add a personal, handmade touch to the smaller, more intimate spaces. The balance of permanence—achieved through the home's deep foundations—and a cabin-like flexibility allows the structure to adapt to different uses, from a stage for entertaining to a private sanctuary. "The inception of this Tiny House can be traced back to Szymon Girtler, who, after years of producing skis under the Monck Custom brand, found himself pivoting due to unexpected changes in the market landscape. With his ski business halted, Szymon sought to further develop his carpentry skills, leading him to collaborate with Ewa Gregorowicz. Together, they identified a niche in the Polish market for well-designed micro-homes that go beyond the typical prefabricated options," said Mikołaj Wojciechowski, Co-founder of Studio Public Partnering with Mikołaj Wojciechowski and his team at Studio Public, the architects approached the Tiny House project with a fresh perspective. Owned by Joe Herrin, a principal at Heliotrope Architects, and his wife Belinda, the project was a long-term labor of love that transformed a modest, late-1960s A-frame kit cabin into a sustainable and functional family retreat. The site is a shared, southeast-facing waterfront parcel with a seasonal stream, wetland, and forest. The multi-phase renovation, which took place over nearly two decades, focused on maximizing daylight, comfort, and functionality while minimizing the cabin's environmental impact. The couple began by installing a proper foundation, rebuilding the deck, and upgrading to energy-efficient windows and insulation. Later additions included a large skylight to brighten the space, an extension to create a much-needed entryway and comfortable shower, and a full overhaul of the kitchen and bathroom. To achieve a net-zero energy use, solar panels were also installed. Inside, the cabin features a cozy, rustic-yet-clean aesthetic. The original fir structure was finished with wood bleach to lighten it, and beams were repainted to cover an outdated stain. Floors are made from reclaimed pine, and cabinetry from birch-ply with laminate countertops. The living and dining areas open to the spacious deck, visually extending the living space. The loft, accessible by a staircase, provides additional sleeping space for family and friends. Outside, the original T1-11 plywood siding was stained, while the new addition is clad in locally milled, stained cedar. A small garden provides fresh vegetables, and a shed stores tools and outdoor gear. This project reflects a deep personal connection to the San Juans, cultivated during Herrin's childhood summers. The cabin functions as a social hub for family and friends and as a basecamp for various outdoor activities. The modest, modular, and solar-powered structure is positioned on a hilly, forested terrain to capture distant views of the Pacific Ocean and optimize passive solar gains. The house is organized into three separate volumes connected by a central circulation space. This longitudinal layout follows the slope of the site, with "cuts" between the volumes allowing for north-south sightlines across the property. The three modules accommodate distinct programmatic functions: Public area: Contains the open-plan living room, kitchen, and dining area. Children's private area: Houses the children's bedrooms. Adults' private area: Contains the master bedroom. A west-facing terrace runs along the length of the house, providing a direct connection to the outdoors from all three modules. A broken gable roof structure envelops the three volumes, creating a unified form that dialogues with the existing terrain. The entire structure is made of dimensioned wood, with composite pillars, beams, and trusses left exposed to serve as the building's final expression.
