We are By the Many, For the Many. COX seeks to do more with less, tapping into resourceful Australian culture to build value through ingenuity. We strive for quality through our beliefs in equality and opportunity. We embed culture in our designs, taking time to listen and understand cultural context and social impacts. We continuously seek the brightest minds to innovate design, process, and typology. We welcome collaboration, from both traditional and disruptive sources, should it have the potential to contribute to better design. Our history in Australian architecture began with the transformative Tocal Agricultural College in New South Wales. Epitomising the renowned Sydney School, the project had a deep and sensitive understanding of context and place, blended with honest and expressive structure and craft. This has informed the work of COX ever since. This history has established key principles we continue to prioritise today. One being the planning of cities and design of buildings that are adaptable to change – cultural, social, technological, and economic. The other is the creation of sustainable spaces – environmental strategies that are embedded, rather than added, to our designs. Today, we have offices across Australia and New Zealand, working on projects of international significance. Our team brings experience and enthusiasm to every new project and client. Our projects demonstrate a dedication to research as well as an ability to work with clients to deliver successful design solutions on time and budget. What we bring to our work transcends design. Our innovative technology and structural design solutions place emphasis and value on the design of core elements. Our structures designed as destinations to bring people together to share experiences that are unique to their time and place. source: coxarchitecture.com.au Category Museum Post Type Building Project Type MARITIME MUSEUM Country China Year 2019 Area 80,000 m² Client Tianjin Municipality Photographers Terence Zhang www.zhiig.com Premium Member Interior Designer Huang Wei Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more

- Pine Nut Cabane | Daab Design | ZHIG
STUDIOS | Cabin | Pine Nut Cabane, designed by Daab Design, is a timber-clad retreat set within a pine forest and olive grove near Marseille, France. Created for a multi-generational family, the cabin serves as a guest studio, artist's workspace, and rural escape. Its design prioritizes flexibility and a deep connection to its natural surroundings. The minimalist design, with its simple volume and use of local materials, references traditional regional farming architecture. The cabin is intended as a subtle, understated space that enhances the client's favorite spot on their property, a place for painting and playing pétanque. The 35 m² cabin is carefully positioned on a rural property outside Marseille, hidden from both the main farmhouse and local roads. It is oriented to the east to capture the gentle morning sunlight and offer expansive valley views. A dense pine forest on the south side provides natural shading from the intense Mediterranean sun. The cabin is clad in scorched pine, a durable, locally sourced material that allows the structure to blend with the forest landscape. The interior features a combination of light plywood panels, matte-black surfaces, and polished concrete floors. This provides a tranquil, balanced atmosphere that contrasts with the bright outdoor light. The design incorporates deep eaves, high-spec double glazing, and cross-ventilation to minimize heat gain and keep the interior cool naturally. The polished concrete floor is integral to the thermal heating and cooling strategy. The cabin's open-plan layout can be reconfigured with full-height matte-black doors to create a central corridor or two private bedrooms. A central, matte-black pod contains the bathroom, which features a cave-like shower with terracotta zellige tiles. An east-facing terrace with a fire pit provides an outdoor seating area with panoramic views. Built-in storage and desks ensure the space remains uncluttered and functional for various activities like yoga, painting, or sleeping. Project credits Architects: Daab Design. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | We dreamed of creating a house that could be picked up from the warehouse by the client, installed the same day, and be ready to live, without wasting time on finishing, selecting furniture, kitchens, dishes, and decor. Our new development "TOPOL 27" is just that. We have placed all the functions in one module and you no longer need to assemble a house from separate blocks. There are 5 functional areas in 27 m²: a bedroom, a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and a dressing room - a maximum of comfortable space in a minimum area. All this delivers by one truck and simply installs on the foundation. The project uses environmentally friendly and durable materials suitable for active use for daily rent. Solid wood and natural oak veneer are combined with black metal elements. On the floor, wear-resistant and hypoallergenic FORBO Flotex material. A large amount of glass harmoniously connects the interior and natural surroundings. The interior was designed as a one-stop solution for an investment project. Everything you need and nothing more. Each item is placed in its place, has a function, and is an integral part of the interior. The set of the house includes furniture, kitchen, curtains, dishes, cutlery, household appliances, outdoor and indoor lamps, outdoor terrace. All the decoration work is done at the factory, and you just need to put linen on the bed and put towels in the bathroom. Most of the interior items were purchased from chain stores so you can quickly replace them. Expensive materials, stone kitchen countertop by the window, wooden windows, and doors set a premium level of finishing and service, emphasizing the contrast between the wild nature around and the comfortable modern interior. The compact fireplace easily heats the entire space, creates a cozy atmosphere, and can be used for cooking. The exterior is made of black metal and wood. Such a solution delicately fits into any environment, does not dominate nature, and scales harmoniously. - Taieri Mouth Bach | Mason and Wales Architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cottage | The Taieri Mouth Bach is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional, simple holiday cottage, or "bach," built by architect Regan Johnston for his family while he was working at Mason & Wales Architects. Located on a sand dune near a fishing village at the mouth of the Taieri River on New Zealand's South Island, the project was completed in 2013 and took only eight weeks to build. The modest 55-square-meter dwelling was designed with a simple gabled form and honest, natural, and robust materials, paying homage to the original, often handmade, fishing huts and baches of the area. The bach's straightforward and economical construction is balanced by a striking, fully-glazed end wall that offers expansive views of the surrounding dune, Moturata Island, and Taieri Beach. To minimize view obstruction while ensuring the structure's stability against high winds and earthquakes, the glazed gable end is reinforced with a system of steel tension rods arranged in an X pattern. An open-plan living area occupies most of the ground floor, featuring a vaulted ceiling that rises to the roof ridge. Another wall with large sliding glass doors opens the living space to a timber patio on the sunny north side. The kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and storage areas are located at the back of the house. The project has been praised for its simplicity, charm, and unquestionable sustainability, with minimal waste during design and construction. It was a recipient of a NZIA Residential Award and a Supreme Timber Building Award at the 2013 New Zealand Wood Awards. - The Sixteen-Oak Barn | HilberinkBosch architects | ZHIG
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Barn | The Sixteen-Oak Barn, created by HilberinkBosch architects, is a project rooted in local tradition and sustainable, on-site material reuse. Faced with the necessity of felling seven century-old oak trees on their estate near 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, architects Annemariken Hilberink and Geert Bosch made the decision to repurpose the ailing timber themselves rather than selling it to a paper factory. This resourceful approach led to the construction of a new multi-purpose barn adjacent to their studio, which is housed in a converted farmhouse. The design of the Sixteen-Oak Barn draws inspiration from the traditional farmhouses of the Meierij region, which historically incorporated various functions into a single structure. The architects made use of every part of the felled oak trees, supplemented by a couple of additional oaks from the nearby Wamberg estate. A mobile sawmill was brought to the site to cut the best-quality core sections of the trunks into structural timber for the frames, roof, and façade. The asymmetrical roof, which features a steep and a low-pitched side, was covered with durable shingles made from smaller sections of oak. The rough-hewn exterior siding was created using pieces of timber with the bark still attached, which gives the façade a textured, organic appearance. The project also embraces the imperfections found in the materials, including marks left by remnants of barbed wire and shrapnel embedded in the old trees, which add to the building's character. The remaining waste wood was chopped and set aside for use as firewood to heat the building during colder months. The barn itself is a blend of rustic and modern aesthetics, incorporating a minimal palette of natural materials: oak, concrete, and glass. Inside, the exposed timber frame is paired with board-formed concrete walls, creating surfaces with unique patterns left by the sapwood used for the forms. Large glass panels and slatted windows allow light to flood into the interior. The 1,300-square-foot structure is divided into three main areas: a carport, a storage room, and a workshop that doubles as a meeting space for the firm. Above the storage room is an open loft space that overlooks the workshop area. - Telescope House | Wendell Burnette Architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2023, the 1600-square-foot Telescope House is a retreat in the high-desert landscape of Sedona, Arizona, designed by Phoenix-based Wendell Burnette Architects. The house was commissioned by clients who, after visiting the area for decades, wanted a low-impact home that would serve as a seasonal retreat, a short-term rental, and eventually, their full-time residence. The house's design is inspired by the metaphor of a "land-based telescope" that frames specific views of the dramatic desert landscape. Situated on a gently sloping site on the footprint of a former building, the house is intentionally understated. The rectangular form is nestled between two rows of centuries-old Juniper trees that frame views of the iconic Cathedral Rock and Munds Mountain. Clad in weathering Corten steel and with steel-plate window frames, the exterior helps the building recede into the landscape like a "dark shadow," particularly at night, and offers excellent fire resistance. The interiors are designed as a "welcome respite for the eyes in the desert," with a minimalist, dark-toned palette. The floors, walls, ceilings, doors, and cabinets are crafted from FSC-certified recycled wood-dust panels impregnated with a dark pigment, then waxed and buffed. A telescopic central hall, with interior surfaces that step up and out, subtly directs attention toward the panoramic east-facing view. This layout connects the more private, cabinet-like bedroom and bathroom areas on the south to the main living, kitchen, and dining spaces at the east end. The house also incorporates sustainable features, including strategically shaded windows for passive solar heating in the winter, operable windows for cross ventilation, and the potential for a future photovoltaic array. A planned water-harvesting tank will further increase the home's self-sufficiency. "The fusion of wood and silver in organic and biomorphic forms represents the harmony between nature and technology. This concept seeks to re-establish the connection between the natural world and the man-made environment. The smooth curves and abstract shapes of this fusion evoke a sense of fluidity and movement, highlighting the dynamic and cyclical nature of existence. The use of wood, a symbol of life and growth, and silver, a symbol of strength and resilience, underscores the importance of balance and symbiosis in our lives. By incorporating these elements into our living spaces, we invite a sense of calmness, inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things. This design philosophy emphasizes the need to create environments that serve not only our functional needs but also our spiritual and emotional well-being." Oda Lindberg ... 11/2/2023 comment ...
