The house features a design that minimizes its impact on the steep, wooded site, creating the illusion that it floats among the trees. To achieve this "floating" effect, the structure uses a hybrid anchoring system. The upslope side of the cabin is supported by standard concrete footings, while the other side is suspended from two existing trees using a specialized treehouse fastener system called Garnier Limbs. This approach not only saved money by avoiding expensive foundations and retaining walls but also minimized site disturbance. The aesthetic of the Half-Tree House is characterized by a strong contrast between its exterior and interior. The exterior is clad with timber milled from Eastern Pines that were felled on the property. This wood was then treated with traditional Scandinavian pine tar, giving the cabin a dark, weather-resistant facade that blends into the forest. Inside, the walls and ceiling are painted white, and the floor is sealed with a clear, matte coat, creating a bright and minimalist space. The single-room interior is flooded with natural light and air via three large, 8-by-8-foot steel-tube pivot doors that also feature dual-insulated glass. For the colder New York winters, the space is heated by an efficient Jotul wood stove. The cabin has no piped water or electricity, with power coming from a portable generator if needed, reinforcing its identity as a remote and self-reliant getaway. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2018, Chalet M is a tiny, minimalist cabin designed by São Paulo-based architect Silvia Acar Arquitetura for a secluded woodland site in São Lourenço da Serra, Brazil. The 270-square-foot structure was created as a peaceful retreat for its owners to reconnect with nature. Due to the challenging, remote terrain and lack of vehicle access, all building materials were selected to be lightweight and were carried to the site by hand, ensuring the cabin has a minimal impact on the environment. The cabin was elevated off the ground on six cylindrical concrete columns, allowing it to rest lightly on the forest floor. The exterior is comprised of a massive hardwood structure covered with OSB plywood, a Tyvek air and water barrier, and corrugated metal sheets for the outer layer. Its dark exterior helps the structure blend seamlessly into the lush surrounding forest. A floor-to-ceiling glass facade is the focal point of the design and includes sliding glass panels that open onto a wooden deck. This feature visually and physically connects the interior with the landscape, which includes a lake and mountain views. Inside, the cabin's material palette consists of thermoacoustic insulation and light-toned paricá plywood for the walls, ceiling, and built-in furniture. A prefabricated fiberglass box base anchors the sleeping and storage area. - Cabin MM01 | Christian Tonko | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Designed by Austrian architect Christian Tonko and completed in 2022, Cabin MM01 is a modular and minimalist vacation home in the rural, alpine landscape of Carinthia, Austria. The 25-square-meter cabin, which is complemented by an equal-sized terrace, was created as a base for a couple to enjoy outdoor activities. The project is a testament to sustainable and flexible design, with a structure that is both easily transportable and leaves no lasting trace on its site. The cabin is a study in efficient and elegant micro-architecture, based on the standard dimensions and frames of shipping containers. Its name, "MM01," is a tribute to Malcolm McLean, the inventor of the modern shipping container. This design approach allows the cabin to be transported easily by a standard truck and installed on-site using removable screw foundations. When the cabin is relocated, the site can be fully restored to its original state. The compact 25-square-meter internal space is efficiently divided into four equally sized zones: a bedroom, a living/workspace, a kitchen, and a bathroom. An equally sized, covered terrace extends the living area outdoors, providing a shaded space to enjoy the surrounding forest. The terrace is oriented to the north for optimal shading and privacy. Expansive glazing lines the front of the cabin, connecting the interior with the outdoors and making the space feel larger than its physical footprint. The MM01 cabin combines high-quality, durable materials with clever space-saving techniques. While inspired by shipping containers, the cabin is built from specially constructed metal frames and highly insulated panels for superior thermal performance compared to typical metal containers. Despite its small size, the cabin features modern conveniences, including a full kitchen with a dishwasher and a washing machine.
