- c-Home Hudson | LOT-Ek | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Container Home | The c-Home Hudson, a project by LOT-EK completed in 2019, is a single-family modular home constructed from six upcycled 40-foot shipping containers. Located in Claverack, New York, just outside the city of Hudson, the house is a prototype for LOT-EK's c-Home series, which aims to produce sustainable, design-forward homes from reclaimed materials. The 1,920-square-foot residence features a straightforward design, with the containers arranged in a 3-by-2 stack to form a two-story volume. The design is notable for its use of the shipping containers' original material and industrial aesthetic. Large, triangular-shaped cuts were made into the corrugated steel shells and replaced with expansive glass walls, creating a striking visual contrast and allowing for abundant natural light and ventilation. These geometric cuts not only define the facade but also extend to form the front and rear decks, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The first floor includes an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. Upstairs, the two bedrooms function as private suites, each with its own staircase, a full bathroom, and a walk-in closet. An external staircase leads to a green roof and deck, adding further outdoor space. The house also retains much of the containers' original character, with exposed steel and the wooden flooring on the interior. The pre-fabricated construction method allowed the house to be assembled on-site quickly, with the modules built off-site and then delivered and stacked into place. Clare, V95 DK38, Ireland 2021 Since Architecture Office 81.Tigín Tiny Home-Common Knowledge-Shantanu Staritsk (1).jpg The Tigín Tiny Home is an initiative launched in 2022 by Common Knowledge, an Irish non-profit social enterprise, to address Ireland's housing crisis. Designed as an oversized, transportable caravan, the Tigín—the Gaelic word for 'small cottage'—is an affordable, sustainable, and consciously designed housing alternative. Beyond simply selling the tiny homes, Common Knowledge's project empowers people by sharing the necessary construction skills through their educational programs. The Tigín Tiny Home is a compact yet airy micro-dwelling of 20 square meters with a smart, two-level layout. High ceilings and large, double-glazed windows create a sense of space and connectivity with nature. Kitchenette: Includes an oven, gas hobs, and a sink, with Iroko hardwood worktops. Seating/Sleeping Area: A window seat converts into a double bed for guests. Bathroom: A shower and a composting toilet enhance the home's self-sufficiency. Storage: Cleverly integrated shelves and cabinets provide ample storage. A ladder provides access to a cozy loft space large enough for a king-sized bed. Sustainable and locally-sourced materials The Tigín's construction focuses on minimizing its carbon footprint through the use of natural and locally-sourced materials. Corrugated hemp panels from Margent Farm provide a lightweight, biodegradable, and sustainable alternative to traditional cladding. The walls are insulated with breathable cork, which naturally regulates temperature and humidity. The floor is finished with natural rubber linoleum tiles. A timber frame provides the structural support. The tiny home is constructed on a custom-built, triple-axle trailer, making it mobile and highly adaptable. Its design prioritizes energy efficiency, with some reports suggesting it uses up to 30 percent less energy than a standard UK home, thanks to strategic glazing and thermal performance. Involved people and organizations Developer and Designer: Common Knowledge (Ireland). Co-Founders: Harrison Gardner, Fionn Kidney, Erin McClure, and Spider Hickman. Lead Designer: Shantanu Starick. Materials Partner (Hemp Cladding): Margent Farm (Cambridgeshire, UK), which pioneered the use of hemp in sustainable construction. OFF-GRID ACCOMMODATION | Cabin | The Pod[e] Mulla Mulla is a luxurious, off-grid holiday cabin designed by A-HA Design Studio in collaboration with Scott Taylor, co-founder of the Pod[e] brand. Located on 300 acres of coastal bushland on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, the prototype combines high-end comfort with eco-conscious features to minimize its environmental footprint. The design process was deeply rooted in the site's unique characteristics. The design team camped on the coastal bushland to understand the site's essence, topography, prevailing winds, vistas, and soundscapes. The cabin's bold and distinct exterior changes color throughout the day with the shifting rhythms of the light. It features prismatic and champagne-colored panels, along with a mirrored skirt, which creates a captivating visual effect. Material palette: The interior and exterior material choices reference the native flora of the region, the Ironstone Mulla Mulla, a compact native plant with light, feathery blooms endemic to the Eyre Peninsula. The interior features a palette of soft pinks, natural timber, and brushed stainless steel. Dimensions: The cabin has a modest footprint, measuring 12 by 5 meters, with an additional 50 square meters of decking. Open and connected interior: Despite its small size, the design aims to maximize a sense of openness and connection to the landscape. Sustainability The cabin is self-sufficient and operates entirely off-grid. It is powered by solar panels. It is equipped with a rainwater catchment and filtration system. The design uses natural ventilation and strategically placed windows and doors to create a comfortable internal climate. - Octothorpe House | Mork-Ulnes Architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Octothorpe House is one of the first buildings constructed using cross-laminated timber produced in the United States. Sitting on the site of a forest lost to wildfire two decades ago, the home nods to the place’s history with ashen Shou Sugi Ban cedar board siding and the raw CLT finish of its interior. Formally, four intersecting shed-roofed bars divide the plan into public and private areas. The intersections of the bars form planting courtyards around the building—one fully enclosed at the building’s center and seven semi-enclosed at its perimeter. The narrowness of each bar and generous glazing on opposing walls create a light-filled interior that merges with the outside. - Monument House | Josh Schweitzer | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Located in the rugged, high desert landscape near Joshua Tree National Park, California, the Monument House is a vivid and experimental retreat designed by architect Josh Schweitzer. Completed in 1990, the 950-square-foot home is composed of three interconnected, Cubist pavilions that appear to emerge from the rocky terrain. Schweitzer, who briefly worked for Frank Gehry, utilized bold, nature-inspired colors—mossy green, sapphire blue, and pinkish-red—that evoke the hues of the desert sage, sky, and wild flowers. The home sits amidst a landscape of immense boulders, and its angular, geometric volumes deliberately mirror the rock formations around it. The design is notable for its use of asymmetric, trapezoidal openings that frame dramatic views of the surrounding Mojave Desert, bringing the landscape into the interior spaces. The shifting perspectives and relationships between the house's three volumes create a dynamic experience as one moves around the property. The internal spaces are animated by paler tones of lime, ochre, mustard, and brick. Originally conceived as a vacation home for the architect and his wife, the Monument House later became available for private bookings, allowing the public to experience this radical and sculptural piece of architecture. The Monument House represents a long tradition of experimental architecture in the California high desert, where unique and visionary structures are often found. In 1990, the project was recognized with an Architectural Record Award in the vacation and summer home category. - The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) | Wood Marsh Architecture | ZHIG
PUBLIC | Multi-use facility | Completed in 2002, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) is a multi-use facility built for the Victorian State Government in Melbourne, Australia. The project combines the existing infrastructure of three organisations, ACCA, Chunky Move and Playbox, to create a unified major presence in the Arts, and form a precinct with the existing Malthouse theatre building located on the adjacent site. The building is designed to make reference to its primary function; it is a sculpture in which to exhibit art. The bold form and materiality of the façade is intended to create a strong presence and express with optimism, and in a frugal sense, a robust laboratory for experimentation. Those using the building are meant to feel comfortably challenged. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_e6be3ef126ec4407969cd717274a9f7b~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2400,h_1490,al_c,q_90/The%20Australian%20Centre%20for%20Contemporary%20Art%20(ACCA).jpg Please Wait The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA)4.jpg The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA)3.jpg The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA)2.jpg 1/2 0 Product 5.3K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) 111 Sturt St, Southbank VIC 3006, Australia. - The Poplar Garden House | Onix | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Nestled in an ecological allotment garden in Groningen, the Netherlands, the Poplar Garden House is a small, contemporary shed designed by architect Haiko Meijer of Onix for his own family. Completed around 2011, the 32-square-meter cabin was conceived as a low-impact, off-grid retreat within the Tuinwijck allotment gardens, a green space where city residents can rent plots for gardening and leisure. The design prioritizes simplicity and sustainability, using materials and energy systems that respect its natural setting. The house features a simple gabled roof but is modernized through large openings and vertical glazing strips that echo the poplar panels used for its construction. Constructed entirely from uniform poplar planks, the house is both a functional living space and an artistic sculpture, with the boards covering the interior and exterior. This unified material palette, from the walls and floors to the foundation and roof, creates a consistent and warm aesthetic. The planks are designed to be removable, allowing for future artistic customization. Its L-shaped floor plan and strategic placement create two distinct outdoor areas: a sunny, extroverted space facing a playground and a private, introverted, and shaded space facing a drainage ditch. The interior features a central living space, a compact kitchenette with a gas cooktop, and a concrete counter that merges with a built-in fireplace. With no electric power supplied to the allotment, the house is completely powered by natural daylight and rooftop solar panels. A circular skylight and narrow vertical windows illuminate the space, while a raised sleeping loft offers a cozy, elevated sleeping area.
