RESIDENTIAL | House | The House in Tokyo, also known as the "Frame of a House" or "2700 House", was designed by IGArchitects founder Masato Igarashi for himself and his wife. The project, completed in April 2023, is located in Tokyo and is a response to the city's high land costs, with the architects aiming to explore possibilities for modern, flexible urban living in a compact space. The residence blurs the lines between private and work life, creating a dynamic environment where the couple can sense each other's presence regardless of where they are in the house. Spanning 59.88 square meters, the house is structurally robust and visually open. It was designed to feel like "one big room" with staggered mezzanine levels rather than traditional, distinct spaces. The concrete structure is left exposed, complemented by wooden details, and the floors are arranged to create different areas without fixed partitions. The interior features a series of platforms and stairs that maximize the use of the small urban footprint while maintaining a sense of fluidity and openness. The design prioritizes natural light, with sections of full-height glazing at the front of the home that draw light deep into the plan. Service areas like the kitchen and bathroom are positioned at the rear. The strategic placement of windows and the irregular floor plates are intended to make it difficult to see into the interior from the outside, creating privacy despite the abundant natural light. The design draws inspiration from the studio founders' own home, Villa Ellsinger, and was conceived as a modest structure that ""grows upwards"" to maximize its small footprint and address the harsh coastal climate of wind, rain, and salt spray. The house is oriented on a north-south axis, with a largely closed-off northern facade to shield it from neighbors and a nearby county road, while opening up with large windows to the south and east to capture sun and views of the forest and fields. The structure is a standout on its rural plot, topped with a distinctive, steep, hat-shaped roof and gables clad in untreated aluminum sheeting for durability. A cantilevered canopy extends from the structure, providing a covered entrance. To create a spacious, unobstructed internal volume, the roof loads are transferred to a horizontal glue-laminated timber frame that sits atop the exterior walls, visible from the outside. COMMERCIAL | Mixed-use | The World Trade Centre in San Marino fuses many major themes in Foster + Partners’ architecture, in particular the creation of a new public realm, urban regeneration and the long-term environmental benefits from mixed-use developments with built-in flexibility. The World Trade Centre in San Marino will provide living and working accommodation for the local population, but more importantly will create an exciting new public space served by shops, restaurants and cafes. It is more than a single building – it is a catalyst for urban regeneration. Adaptability is vital to the future of our cities. Working patterns have become much more flexible over the last two decades. In response to technological developments, working patterns will no doubt continue to change. We cannot predict the precise nature of these developments, but we can build flexibility into the structure of buildings so that they can continue to be useful as circumstances alter. This is the case with the World Trade Centre in San Marino. This project takes the mixed-use proposition to its logical conclusion – it not only combines apartments, offices, shops and restaurants within the same building, but provides a structure that allows individual units to be easily adapted from offices to apartments should the need arise in the future. The development also provides another public amenity – a much-needed car park to serve not only the development itself, but also the broader local community. No-one wants to look out from the new building and see an ocean of cars, and so the car park has been integrated within the site, partially buried. A concern for the physical context has produced a solution that is sensitive to the culture and climate of their place. Drawing upon the vernacular traditions of this wine-growing region we have created a pergola – or plant-covered roof trellis – covering the car park, providing both natural shading for the cars and an attractive visual shield. A building cannot be viewed in isolation but must be seen as part of the larger urban context. With its combination of office space, apartments and leisure facilities, the World Trade Centre in San Marino will create a new public focus within the city and will act as a magnet for future development. RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2020, the Four Seasons House is a prefabricated, negative-carbon family home located in the Drijflanen nature reserve in Tilburg, Netherlands. Designed by architect Joris Verhoeven for himself and his family, the 70-square-meter house was built to intensely experience the versatile Dutch seasons while fitting seamlessly into its natural surroundings. The small, black-clad structure was built on a site that once served as a sheep-grazing heather field for the local wool industry, and the design intentionally lacks barriers to fully connect with the nature outside. The house was constructed using sustainable and efficient techniques, featuring a prefabricated structure made of wood framing cassettes filled with flax insulation, which has a negative carbon footprint. The project was completed in 2017 for the founder of Q-Drinks and his family. What began as a plan for a rustic getaway for two evolved during the design process to accommodate a family of four, necessitating an expanded footprint while still working with the limited area of accessible rock. The design embraces the site's challenging topography rather than trying to flatten it. The angular, faceted form of the cabin is lifted off the ground by nine hand-poured concrete footings, a system chosen to minimize the structure's impact on the sloped site and surrounding tree roots. The house is a compelling marriage of modern design and prefabrication technology, which enabled the construction on the remote and rugged site to be completed more efficiently. The prefabricated timber frame components were engineered and CNC-cut off-site by Bensonwood and delivered ready for assembly, which reduced construction time and site disturbance. The cabin's exterior combines matte black metal siding and contrasting timber, with the geometric form creating a structure that appears to transform depending on the viewer's vantage point. A cantilevered timber porch extends dramatically over the rock's ledge, framing stunning views across the valley below. Large sections of full-height glazing, including a 24-foot-wide sliding glass window wall, maximize natural light and offer expansive views of the surrounding forest and mountains. The interior features a minimal aesthetic, designed to feel like one large, connected space. In 2018, the Cabin on a Rock received a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. Created primarily for use during the winter cross-country skiing season, the cabin is elevated off the ground and is designed to take in views of the soft hills, lakes, and low winter sun toward the southern horizon. The design is conceived as a "thick house," with secondary spaces serving as a form of insulation between the exterior and the interior core. This core is a two-story central space that functions like a small urban piazza and is filled with light from the sides and above. This central area features varied ceiling heights, ranging from smaller, cave-like children's beds to a high-ceilinged common room. Natural light is filtered into this central space through the surrounding secondary rooms. The materials and color palette reflect traditional housing in the area: a black-stained wooden shell and a light-wood interior. The timber construction features substantial insulation, with walls insulated to 15 cm, floors to 20 cm, and the roof to 25 cm. Wooden panels are used for cladding both the interior and exterior, and the roof is covered with wooden panels over a membrane. Interior fittings and the kitchen are custom-designed by the architects, using pine plywood. Pine and fir were used for both the cladding and construction. The bathroom and hallway floors are finished with limestone, and a plastered masonry fireplace provides warmth. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City.
