ENTERTAINMENT | Sports Arena | The Nokia Arena project is an ambitious urban renewal project, situated at a pivotal location within Tampere, Finland. It stitches the urban fabric back together across an existing railway and connects East to West, creating a new vibrant hub of high quality living, working, leisure and culture for the city and Finland. The mixed-use program consists of a multi-purpose ice hockey arena with a hotel, five adjacent towers with a podium that includes residences, retail and offices. The arena, which occupies one fifth of the complex, will have the capacity to accommodate 17,000 visitors. With its casino, bars and restaurant at deck level, the arena redefines its pivotal function as a hub for diverse urban activities. RESIDENTIAL | Private House | Embedded in a gentle hilly landscape, the house complements an existing ensemble. The adopted building configuration, with its open angles and two intersecting saddle roofs, reflects the distinctive character of the site. Completely closed towards the street, the generously glazed interior with its central living and dining area opens up to the impressive natural landscape. The spatial transition continues smoothly through a terrace laid out on several levels with a partially sheltered front area. Each room offers a variety of visual connections internally as well as to the surrounding nature. Inside, the intersection of the roof as well as the overall height of the rooms is tangible. Tall the chosen materials, white walls and polished screed are restrained and thus emphasize the particular geometry of the house. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Cabin | The Wauhaus Cabin is a minimalist, 20-square-meter retreat designed and built by the Hungarian studio Hello Wood. Completed in 2021, the cabin is situated on a steep hillside in the Zala County hills of Hungary, appearing to float above the ground on stilts of varying lengths. The playful design, inspired by treehouses, offers a new perspective on the surrounding landscape and functions as a guest house, study, or glamping accommodation. The exterior is clad in graphite gray larch planking, creating a contemporary, clean look that contrasts with the warm interior. A narrow bridge provides access to the entrance, where it widens to form a small terrace. Inside, the space is completely covered in natural birch plywood, with oak flooring, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. A key feature is the large, floor-to-ceiling window at one end, which acts as a "fourth wall" and allows the landscape to define the mood of the interior by projecting different colors and light throughout the seasons. Additional round windows add a playful element to the design. Despite its compact size, the Wauhaus features a small kitchenette, and sliding birch plywood doors conceal the bathroom and cabinet, maximizing the use of the limited space. True to Hello Wood's focus on sustainable and durable construction, the cabin is built with eco-friendly materials and is designed for all-season use, promising to last for decades. Completed in 2021, the cabin is situated on a steep hillside in the Zala County hills of Hungary, appearing to float above the ground on stilts of varying lengths. The playful design, inspired by treehouses, offers a new perspective on the surrounding landscape and functions as a guest house, study, or glamping accommodation. The exterior is clad in graphite gray larch planking, creating a contemporary, clean look that contrasts with the warm interior. A narrow bridge provides access to the entrance, where it widens to form a small terrace. Inside, the space is completely covered in natural birch plywood, with oak flooring, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. A key feature is the large, floor-to-ceiling window at one end, which acts as a "fourth wall" and allows the landscape to define the mood of the interior by projecting different colors and light throughout the seasons. Additional round windows add a playful element to the design. Despite its compact size, the Wauhaus features a small kitchenette, and sliding birch plywood doors conceal the bathroom and cabinet, maximizing the use of the limited space. True to Hello Wood's focus on sustainable and durable construction, the cabin is built with eco-friendly materials and is designed for all-season use, promising to last for decades. The project was a response to the client's desire for an exciting, volume-maximizing home with a covered garage on a small, irregularly shaped corner lot in a densely populated urban area. The design drew inspiration from the concepts of a "mineral" and "reflection." The multifaceted, polygonal shape was a direct result of maximizing the buildable volume within the confines of three different height restrictions. This process was likened to cutting a precious gemstone. The pristine white facade contrasts with the urban context, emphasizing its distinct geometric form. The "reflection" concept: Inside, the interplay of light and geometry creates a dynamic, fluid sense of space, expanding the perceived boundaries of the compact interior. Transparent and translucent surfaces, as well as mirrored finishes on the third-floor bathroom unit, induce visual reflection that changes as people move or as light shifts. Despite its small footprint (around 86 square meters across four levels, including a basement), the interior feels much more expansive due to the clever design. Strategic window placements, particularly on the corners, draw the eye along diagonals, increasing the sense of depth. The functional elements, such as the kitchen, counter shelves, and floors, contrast with the abstractness of the building's overall polyhedron shape. Reflective stainless steel in the bathroom and carefully considered interior appointments further the themes of mineral and reflection. The project was a response to the client's desire for an exciting, volume-maximizing home with a covered garage on a small, irregularly shaped corner lot in a densely populated urban area. The design drew inspiration from the concepts of a "mineral" and "reflection." The multifaceted, polygonal shape was a direct result of maximizing the buildable volume within the confines of three different height restrictions. This process was likened to cutting a precious gemstone. The pristine white facade contrasts with the urban context, emphasizing its distinct geometric form. The "reflection" concept: Inside, the interplay of light and geometry creates a dynamic, fluid sense of space, expanding the perceived boundaries of the compact interior. Transparent and translucent surfaces, as well as mirrored finishes on the third-floor bathroom unit, induce visual reflection that changes as people move or as light shifts. Despite its small footprint (around 86 square meters across four levels, including a basement), the interior feels much more expansive due to the clever design. Strategic window placements, particularly on the corners, draw the eye along diagonals, increasing the sense of depth. The functional elements, such as the kitchen, counter shelves, and floors, contrast with the abstractness of the building's overall polyhedron shape. Reflective stainless steel in the bathroom and carefully considered interior appointments further the themes of mineral and reflection. A small plaza-like space on the ground floor, created by elevating the house with a piloti, provides a rare sense of openness in the tight urban setting. URBAN PLANNING | Public space | With the mission to revitalize the area of Eliel and Asema squares downtown Helsinki, the concept “Klyyga” was developed. Translated into “the crossing” in local slang, Klyyga aims to both fit in and add to contemporary Helsinki. The project emphasizes on the two city grids that meets at these squares, Elielinaukio and Asema-aukio, and the aim is to create a vibrant new plaza and city block, supporting the Helsinki urban strategy: To make the city center more vibrant and accelerate green mobility. RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | Designed and built by SMITH Architects, the Little Black Cabin in Blackheath, Australia, is a 28-square-meter architectural restoration project completed in 2021. The project saw a dilapidated 120-year-old cottage, originally built for workers in the Blue Mountains, transformed into a luxurious and peaceful retreat. Instead of a full demolition, the architects opted to restore the existing structure by wrapping it in a new, insulated skin of charred cedar cladding, a technique known as shou sugi ban. This dark, textured facade provides protection against the elements and bushfire attacks, and allows the cabin to blend seamlessly with its natural bushland setting. Recycled and repurposed materials were used throughout the project, with bricks from the original structure used to rebuild the foundations and combined with recycled concrete blocks to terrace the sloping site and create gardens. The interior of the one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin retains the character and history of the original cottage, with the salvaged and restored historical framework visible from within. This contrasts with the contemporary and highly crafted new insertions, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Large windows frame views of the surrounding rugged escarpment and valley, allowing guests to absorb the tranquil scenery. The cabin is used as a guesthouse, providing a luxurious escape for visitors to recharge and explore the nearby mountains and villages. The project saw a dilapidated 120-year-old cottage, originally built for workers in the Blue Mountains, transformed into a luxurious and peaceful retreat. Instead of a full demolition, the architects opted to restore the existing structure by wrapping it in a new, insulated skin of charred cedar cladding, a technique known as shou sugi ban. This dark, textured facade provides protection against the elements and bushfire attacks, and allows the cabin to blend seamlessly with its natural bushland setting. Recycled and repurposed materials were used throughout the project, with bricks from the original structure used to rebuild the foundations and combined with recycled concrete blocks to terrace the sloping site and create gardens. The interior of the one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin retains the character and history of the original cottage, with the salvaged and restored historical framework visible from within. This contrasts with the contemporary and highly crafted new insertions, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Large windows frame views of the surrounding rugged escarpment and valley, allowing guests to absorb the tranquil scenery. The cabin is used as a guesthouse, providing a luxurious escape for visitors to recharge and explore the nearby mountains and villages.
