The project involved converting a 1950s garage and washroom, originally built in a walnut orchard, into a highly space-efficient residence. The design is a study in creative reuse and practical resourcefulness, featuring reclaimed and recycled materials that add character and a unique history to the small house. The house is distinguished by its angular geometry and facade of rusty metal, which reflects the industrial feel of its repurposed materials. Elements throughout the home have a past life, such as the rain screen made from vineyard stakes sourced from a friend's property and rollers for a kitchen storage space repurposed from skateboard wheels found at an estate sale. Inside, the design maximizes every inch of the small space, with an emphasis on functionality and light. The foundation was recycled from old planter boxes, and the building incorporates unexpected materials throughout. The extensive remodel includes a home office, a compact kitchen, a bathroom, and a sleeping loft, creating a comfortable and practical home within the limited footprint of the original garage. Completed in 2006, the project offers a contemporary take on the traditional, archetypal Slovenian farmhouse. The house was designed to be cost-effective, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance, with a construction process that allowed for rapid on-site assembly The design is centered on a basic pitched-roof volume, but its cladding offers a unique, modern interpretation. The facade features a veil of horizontally oriented timber louvers on the north and south sides, which contrast with vertically oriented zinc panels that cover the roof and parts of the east and west elevations. While the house appears to lack traditional windows from a distance, the louvers and gaps in the timber cladding allow natural light and ventilation to filter into the interior while maintaining a sense of privacy. The design is interactive, allowing occupants to adapt the house to the weather and their mood. The interior and exterior spaces are functionally distributed in a ""corridorless"" design, with an open floor plan that flows naturally from one space to another. The building opens up onto terraces on both the northern and southern facades, allowing residents to pursue outdoor living depending on the weather; the southern terrace offers warmth on colder days, while the northern terrace provides shade during the summer. Sustainability is a key feature of the Simple House. The highly insulated envelope, combined with solar panels on the roof and a central heating plant, ensures low running costs and a reduced environmental footprint. The use of durable, low-maintenance materials like zinc and wood further contributes to the home's longevity and minimal upkeep needs. • Holiday Home | Orange Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Situated on the Dutch island of Texel, the Holiday Home by Orange Architects is a compact, 70-square-meter cabin designed to offer a flexible and sustainable retreat close to nature. Designed for a client who wanted to maximize the experience of their vacation, the house prioritizes social spaces during the day and adapts to become private sleeping quarters at night through a clever system of rotating panels and doors. The exterior is a striking, sculptural volume clad in black-stained timber, which allows the house to recede into its woodland surroundings while creating a bold aesthetic. In contrast, the interior features a bright and warm material palette of light-colored birch plywood, creating a seamless and spacious feeling throughout the compact home. During the day, the ground-floor living area, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom can be opened to create a single, fluid space. Large, five-meter-high glass windows and doors on the southern façade connect the living area to a covered terrace and the surrounding forest, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. At night, movable wooden panels can be rotated or closed to create private rooms, including an en-suite bathroom. A lofted level provides additional sleeping or living space. The design of the Holiday Home was guided by sustainability from the outset. The structure was prefabricated by a contractor on the mainland to minimize on-site waste and construction time. The use of all-electric systems, including rooftop solar panels, concrete floors for thermal mass, and a well-insulated envelope, ensures the home is fossil-fuel-free and energy efficient. • The Olive Tree House | Eva Sopeoglou | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Situated in an olive grove in Halkidiki, Greece, The Olive Tree House is a 21-square-meter prefabricated summer house designed by Eva Sopeoglou Architecture and completed in 2016. The project was conceived as a low-maintenance, eco-conscious weekend retreat for its client, offering stunning views of the sea and the monasteries of Mount Athos. The design stands out for its creative use of a perforated, olive-green metallic envelope, which wraps around the structure and is inspired by the dappled shade of olive trees. This innovative cladding, developed in collaboration with metal fabricator METALSO, uses a CNC punching machine to create a textile-like pattern with leaf-shaped perforations. As the sun moves, this envelope fills the interior with a dynamic play of light and shadow, blurring the line between inside and outside. The house's rectangular, 3-by-7-meter plan is oriented to the cardinal points, a strategic placement that maximizes shading, natural ventilation, and views. A thin corridor connects the small interior rooms, which include a kitchen and bedroom, and is aligned with the surrounding olive trees. The building's orientation allows each room to have its own character based on the quality and intensity of its shadows, with colorful morning light on the east side and dramatic midday effects from the south. Full-height sliding metal doors allow the internal spaces to open up completely to the landscape, facilitating semi-indoor and outdoor living. To ensure interior comfort, the design relies on natural ventilation, including a sloped roof that helps extract hot air. The prefabricated nature of the components allows the house to be dismantled at any time, leaving a minimal environmental footprint. The project was envisioned to demonstrate an alternative, minimalist way of life, proving that a person needs very little space to live, work, and sleep comfortably. The design is characterized by a stark contrast between its industrial exterior and its warm, inviting interior. The original structure was reclad in weathering steel, known as Corten, which gives the exterior a striking, robust appearance that blends into the industrial character of its surroundings. Inside, the walls and built-in furniture are lined with birch plywood, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Recessed lighting further enhances the sense of warmth and space within the compact dwelling. The small living space is intelligently designed to be highly functional, with clever storage solutions and a versatile layout. The main area combines a living, dining, and sleeping space, featuring a bed surrounded by concealed storage. Narrow picture windows were strategically placed to offer glimpses of the surrounding greenery and the block opposite. A small, contrasting bathroom is included, and a workspace is integrated into the design.
