RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Cabin in Leningrad is a tiny, barn-style dwelling designed by Russian designer and architect Aleksey Uljanochkin. Located in the rural Leningrad province of Russia, the project explores modern, minimalistic living within a compact, year-round cabin. The cabin measures 45 square meters (484 square feet) and includes an additional 18 square meters (200 square feet) of terrace space. The design features a modern, clean aesthetic, utilizing monochromatic black and natural wood materials. This helps the cabin blend into its rural surroundings. The interior is designed to be cozy yet contemporary. A simple palette of black, natural woods, and textured materials creates a modern vibe that does not compete with the natural environment. The living room features panoramic windows on both sides, allowing for ample natural light and extensive views of the landscape. The cabin's floor plan includes a small kitchen and a dining table adjacent to the living room. It also has a bedroom and a bathroom. An additional sleeping area is located in the attic and can accommodate guests with a folding sofa. CULTURAL | Museum | The Imperial War Museum North (IWMN) in Manchester, England, tells the story of how war has affected the lives of British and the Commonwealth citizens since 1914. The design concept is a globe shattered into fragments and then reassembled. The interlocking of three of these fragments—representing earth, air, and water—comprise the building’s form. SHELTERS | Cabin | La Pointe is a ready-to-camp micro-shelter designed by the Montreal-based architecture firm Atelier l'Abri for the Poisson Blanc Regional Park, located north of Ottawa in Quebec, Canada. This off-grid, A-frame-inspired cabin offers a unique and minimalist nature immersion for two to four guests. The project was completed in 2019. The design reinterprets the classic A-frame cabin, popular in North America since the 1950s, with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. The iconic triangular shape creates a simple, sculptural structure while offering a functional and nature-oriented space. The off-grid shelter was built on-site by Atelier l'Abri's construction team, demonstrating a commitment to hands-on, site-specific design. The structure is clad in natural cedar board and batten, which will weather over time to a silvery hue, helping it blend into the forest. A covered terrace expands the living space, creating an ideal spot to enjoy the outdoors even when the weather is less favorable. The long roof is clad in steel, a nod to timeless, rural buildings. The minimalist and efficient interior makes clever use of space and maximizes natural light. Large bay windows offer uninterrupted views of the forest and the reservoir below, flooding the interior with light. An inclined ladder leads to a lofted bed area, which is suspended from the cathedral ceiling by steel rods, creating a focal point in the space. The ground floor includes a kitchenette and a dining table that can be converted into an additional bed, accommodating up to four people. A wood-burning stove provides warmth during the frosty Canadian winters, enhancing the cozy cabin atmosphere. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Wooden House CM is a detached, 220 m² family home located in Asse, a suburb of Brussels, Belgium. Designed by architects Bruno Vanbesien and Christophe Meersman, the house was completed in 2011 on a vacant lot situated between two existing homes. The design masterfully balances discretion on its facade with transparency and flexibility on the inside, creating an oasis for its inhabitants. The design of Wooden House CM is a testament to the successful collaboration between the architect and the owner, who was also an architectural assistant. From the street, the home appears deceptively modest. Its facade and roof are uniformly clad in thin strips of tropical afromosia hardwood, which will weather naturally over time. The varying thickness of the vertical cladding creates an intriguing visual texture and a sense of depth, with the house's entryway and garage door subtly concealed within the rhythmic wood. The back of the house stands in stark contrast to its reserved front. The architects maximized transparency with large windows on the ground and first floors that can be opened wide, blurring the boundary between the interior and the outdoors. Designed by architects Bruno Vanbesien and Christophe Meersman, the house was completed in 2011 on a vacant lot situated between two existing homes. The design masterfully balances discretion on its facade with transparency and flexibility on the inside, creating an oasis for its inhabitants. The design of Wooden House CM is a testament to the successful collaboration between the architect and the owner, who was also an architectural assistant. From the street, the home appears deceptively modest. Its facade and roof are uniformly clad in thin strips of tropical afromosia hardwood, which will weather naturally over time. The varying thickness of the vertical cladding creates an intriguing visual texture and a sense of depth, with the house's entryway and garage door subtly concealed within the rhythmic wood. The back of the house stands in stark contrast to its reserved front. The architects maximized transparency with large windows on the ground and first floors that can be opened wide, blurring the boundary between the interior and the outdoors. A notable feature is the bedroom on the second floor, which has a glass door that slides away to allow the bed to be rolled out onto a terrace for sleeping under the stars. This playful design element extends the living space and fosters a deep connection to nature. The use of materials, particularly the hardwood cladding, is consistent throughout the exterior. The natural stone flooring, made of basalt tiles, is used in the various rooms and continues onto the outdoor terraces, further maximizing the effect of a seamless transition between inside and outside. The interior was thoughtfully designed to maximize light and space within the constraints of the compact lot. A light shaft positioned directly above a minimalist metal staircase funnels daylight down through the different floors, making the interior feel bright and spacious. The thin construction of the staircase further enhances this effect. Custom-designed interior elements, including the kitchen, bathrooms, and lighting, were carefully crafted to complement the architecture. The deliberate alignment of furniture and thoughtful details emphasizes the architectural language and gives the house its unique character. RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Designed by Rhode Island-based 3six0 Architecture, the Cottage in Woods is a small retreat for an artist located in Foster, Rhode Island, completed around 2013. The project site was a former rural farmland, now covered in dense woods and scattered rock outcroppings, and was selected to provide an escape from urban loft living. The 25' x 25' x 25' cubical volume is articulated with sharp angles, likened to a faceted stone, which serve to shed water and shape entries, allowing the structure to blend with the rocky landscape. The interior and exterior are connected through large sliding doors that open onto a sequence of Alaska yellow cedar decks and strategically placed boulders. These outdoor spaces expand the cottage's footprint, overlooking a small meadow and a historic fieldstone wall. The cottage's interior is a simple and uncluttered space, featuring Douglas fir built-in elements such as an entry bench, a desk with bookshelves, and kitchen counters with open firewood storage. RESIDENTIAL | Studio | The Polygon Studio, a combined sculpture studio and guesthouse, was designed by Jeffery S. Poss Architect and Chicago-based WORKUS Studio for a client with a wooded, steeply sloped lakefront property in New York's Adirondack Mountains. Completed in 2013, the two-story structure was built at the highest elevation of the property, offering tree-filtered views of Lake George from both levels. The design draws on the rural Adirondack vernacular, and its overall form reflects the building's dual purpose. The ground floor, measuring 409 square feet, is dedicated to the sculpture studio. This level features large sliding glass doors, a durable concrete floor, and a tall, light-filled space for creative work, with a tucked-away service area beneath the upper loft. The upper loft serves as a guest room and forms its own gabled volume with a small, cantilevered balcony, offering a private space with elevated views of the lake. The exterior cladding combines galvanized steel siding for the gables and north end with local, milled red cedar for the east and west sides, which adds warmth and references the local vernacular. Inside, the use of locally milled cedar continues on the loft and ceilings, creating a warm, aromatic environment that contrasts with the bright white walls of the studio space.
