Completed around 2014, the modest 850-square-foot cabin was designed to connect its inhabitants with the rugged high desert landscape and the vast, open sky. The house was built with efficiency and a low environmental footprint in mind. Its structure is composed of solid cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, which were prefabricated off-site and transported on a single truckload to the remote location. The entire shell was erected in just over two days by a small crew. The exterior is clad in sheets of unfinished raw steel, which have developed a patina of ochre-red that mimics the color of the surrounding weathered bedrock, helping the home blend into its natural surroundings. The interior features unfinished CLT panels, helping to optimize material usage and costs. The off-grid dwelling is entirely self-sufficient, relying on solar power for electricity and propane for cooking, hot water, and a backup power source. It also features a wood-burning stove for heating. Passive design strategies, such as the use of high thermal mass walls and stack ventilation, help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Large south-facing windows maximize solar gain and frame expansive views of the Cascade foothills. Inside, the compact, two-story layout cleverly incorporates space-saving features inspired by nautical design and old trail cabins. A daybed on the ground floor can be cordoned off with curtains for guest accommodation. This bed is also equipped with a sailboat winch that can raise it to the ceiling, revealing a tile-surround bathtub underneath.   • Clifton House | ASSEMBLY Architecture & Build | ZHIG

    RESIDENTIAL | House | We designed this modern home to fit the scale of the neighborhood, which was mostly one-story bungalows. The house is conceived of as two small cabins. The front cabin is a one-story structure that faces the street and keeps with the scale of the block. It houses the living room, kitchen, and dining room, while a small bump-out at the front allows for a wood burning stove and built-in media cabinet. The back cabin is a two-story structure that contains the bedrooms, bathrooms, a small office and laundry. The upper level of the back cabin houses the primary bedroom with views over the Biltmore Estate grounds. Between the two cabins is the entrance. With dark wood walls and a small built-in bench under a circular window there is an undeniable tea-house vibe as you enter the home. When designing the home, we went for a “warm” modernism. We love the clean lines and thoughtful composition of modernism, but did not want the house to feel cold or sterile. As such, we included a number of custom built-ins and plenty of naturally finished wood walls and ceilings. The kitchen has white oak cabinets with birch walls and oak floor. The primary bathroom has an arched shower, birch ceiling, and skylights. The end result is both modern and inviting. We were also really lucky to have an amazing client in Everyday Oil owner Emma Allen. With dark wood walls and a small built-in bench under a circular window there is an undeniable tea-house vibe as you enter the home. When designing the home, we went for a “warm” modernism. We love the clean lines and thoughtful composition of modernism, but did not want the house to feel cold or sterile. As such, we included a number of custom built-ins and plenty of naturally finished wood walls and ceilings. The kitchen has white oak cabinets with birch walls and oak floor. The primary bathroom has an arched shower, birch ceiling, and skylights. The end result is both modern and inviting. We were also really lucky to have an amazing client in Everyday Oil owner Emma Allen. We worked with her to select handmade tiles for the bathrooms and kitchen backsplash and she did an amazing job of sourcing all the interior furniture and bed sets. Situated in the forested hillside of Valea lui Enache, Romania, the cabin was built upon the foundations and footprint of a previously failed structure and a small, family-built annex. This approach minimized the project's environmental impact by focusing on renewal rather than replacement. The design balances minimalist form with deep respect for its rural surroundings. The cabin is composed of a dark, angular form wrapped in blackened autoclaved timber, which helps it blend seamlessly into the forest. The layout is distributed across two floors, with the ground floor featuring a master bedroom and bathroom, along with a small terrace. The upper floor contains the main living areas—a lounge, kitchen, and dining area. This second level features a vaulted ceiling and expansive, panoramic windows that open toward the forest, creating a sense of expansiveness and a ""cinematic"" connection to the natural setting. Smaller windows on the ground floor enhance intimacy and privacy. A balcony extends the living area, and the staircase connecting the two floors visually reinforces the sense of openness. The minimalist palette of clean, neutral finishes throughout the interior directs focus to the surrounding nature. Sustainable features include efficient insulation, natural ventilation, and passive solar orientation to reduce mechanical intervention. Designed by architect Joris Verhoeven for himself and his family, the 70-square-meter house was built to intensely experience the versatile Dutch seasons while fitting seamlessly into its natural surroundings. The small, black-clad structure was built on a site that once served as a sheep-grazing heather field for the local wool industry, and the design intentionally lacks barriers to fully connect with the nature outside. The house was constructed using sustainable and efficient techniques, featuring a prefabricated structure made of wood framing cassettes filled with flax insulation, which has a negative carbon footprint. This prefabricated method allowed for rapid construction, with the entire structure erected in just three days after the foundation was poured. The exterior is clad in black-stained timber, which helps the house blend in with the dark trunks of the surrounding trees. A unique feature of the exterior is a natural fungal coating specially cultivated to protect the siding, which also possesses a self-repairing capability. Inside, the interior is finished with birch plywood, reflecting the minimalist and natural aesthetic of the design. The pure construction method, where the structural framework serves as the finishing layer, contributed to a faster and more cost-effective build. Large, carefully placed windows act as "changing landscape paintings," providing dynamic views of the reserve throughout the year. Matte black accents on the interior doors, kitchen, and stair railings tie the inside aesthetic to the black exterior. The home is entirely self-sufficient, relying on solar and thermal panels for energy.     STUDIOS | Cabin | The Woodland Cabin is a self-built, low-budget, 35-square-meter retreat in the village of Nouvelles, Belgium, designed and constructed by London-based architecture studio De Rosee Sa. The project showcases the studio's craftsmanship and creative use of materials by replacing a dilapidated structure with a modern guesthouse and studio. The cabin is a modern interpretation of a classic black hut found in rural areas, designed to blend into its fairytale-like surroundings. Its simple, lightweight, and economical design was inspired by the local rural vernacular and built to a tight budget. The project is a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Norwegian cottage, designed for a couple who wanted a simple retreat to maintain a close connection with nature. A remarkable feature of the project was the high degree of client involvement, with the owners doing most of the construction work themselves using spruce harvested from their own forest. The design is sensitive to the surrounding terrain, which heals slowly due to climatic factors. To minimize its impact, the structure rests on a concrete base and incorporates three different levels, which helps to lower its overall height and integrates it with the site's topography. The exterior is clad in untreated spruce, which will naturally fade over time to a silvery-gray patina, further blending the cabin with its environment. Inside, the material palette is warm and simple, continuing the wooden theme with beamed ceilings. Different ceiling heights define the living room, kitchen, and bedroom functions within the main space. The entrance is protected from the elements by a shared gallery roof.
