The modest, modular, and solar-powered structure is positioned on a hilly, forested terrain to capture distant views of the Pacific Ocean and optimize passive solar gains. The house is organized into three separate volumes connected by a central circulation space. This longitudinal layout follows the slope of the site, with "cuts" between the volumes allowing for north-south sightlines across the property. The three modules accommodate distinct programmatic functions: Public area: Contains the open-plan living room, kitchen, and dining area. Children's private area: Houses the children's bedrooms.     HOSPITALITY | Hotel | The Landscape Hotel 48° Nord is an eco-friendly hotel located in the Alsatian village of Breitenbach, France, and designed by Norwegian firm Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter in collaboration with the French firm ASP Architecture. Conceived as a holistic ecotourism experience, the hotel draws on Scandinavian traditions and the region's natural environment to offer guests a place of retreat and reconnection with nature. The project was initiated by Franco-Danish landscape architect and entrepreneur Emil Leroy-Jönsson, who sought to unite French and Scandinavian cultures through design. The hotel complex features a main building that houses the reception, a wellness area, and a restaurant, along with 14 guest cabins, known as hyttes, scattered across the hillside. Inspired by traditional Scandinavian retreats, the design minimizes environmental impact by using locally sourced, untreated wood, such as chestnut shingles for the main building and cabins. The cabin features an angular shape that encloses a two-level space and is constructed entirely of wood, with an untreated larch exterior that helps the small structure blend seamlessly into its forest setting. One of its unique features is the ability to be firmly closed on all sides with wooden shutters, or to have its windows opened to provide varying views of the surrounding wilderness. The interior space, which some have described as ""chapel-like,"" is reduced to the bare minimum, providing only the essentials for a contemplative life. The off-grid nature of the cabin is a core aspect of its design. It deliberately eschews modern amenities like electricity, relying on a single water fountain, an indoor fireplace, an outdoor fire pit, and a stove for cooking and heating. This intentional rusticity provides an escape from modern conveniences and reinforces the project's purpose as a back-to-basics retreat.     COMMERCIAL | Office building | The Ilham Tower development brings together a variety of spaces for living and working in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, all within the compact footprint of a 58-storey, 275-metre-high tower – when complete, it will be one of the tallest mixed-use developments in the city. The challenge of designing such a significant new high-rise scheme was to relate to the large, urban scale, as well as in detail – close-up, the façade is rich and finely tuned to shade the interiors and to provide high-quality living spaces. The tower’s geometry is driven by the need for flexible, column-free spaces to accommodate its mixture of functions. Its form is equally shaped by the climate and urban context – the diamond-shaped plan increases the living spaces with views of key city landmarks and the facades tilt away from the morning and evening sun to reduce solar gain. Extending the public realm, the building is set back from the perimeter of the site and poised on a slender base to create a generous, tree-lined plaza that reaches into the atrium. The glazed facades are pulled back to shade the entrances and create an impressive arrival sequence. The tower also features huge, open sky gardens, which are up to 40 metres in height and have uninterrupted city views, made possible by the tower’s innovative, self-bracing diagrid structure. Office floors are located in the lower portion of the tower, centred on a dramatic three-storey atrium, and serviced apartments are above – at ground level, the two functions have individual entrance lobbies on either side of the building. At the very top of the tower are penthouses, oriented to face spectacular views of KL city centre. The stainless steel-clad structure, the geometry of the triangulated glass panels and the shading systems are all integrated to create a powerful, unified form.   • Augusta Treehouse | Performance Architecture | ZHIG

    RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Perched on a steep, challenging site in Redcliffs, Christchurch, the Augusta Treehouse by Performance Architecture is a compact and energy-efficient two-bedroom home. Designed to feel like a "treehouse," the 65-square-meter dwelling, which has a footprint roughly the size of a double garage, was conceived for a couple committed to simple, compact living. The house maximizes its connection to the dramatic landscape through large feature windows that frame views over the treetops to the Ihutai estuary and the Heathcote and Avon Rivers below. The design of the Augusta Treehouse prioritized energy efficiency and a low-impact construction process. It was constructed with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), which, combined with the building's compact form, create a well-insulated thermal envelope that requires very little heating. The interior features a warm, cozy feel, with the SIPs and timber tones left exposed on the walls, roof, and floor panels. To further enhance energy performance and privacy, polycarbonate panels were used in the stairwell, allowing soft, south-facing light to filter in. The house also includes a mechanical heat recovery ventilation system due to its airtight construction. The main living areas, including the kitchen, dining, and laundry, are located on the lower level, while the two bedrooms and a bathroom are situated on an open mezzanine. A skylight above the main bedroom can be opened to purge excess heat during the summer. The thoughtful design, from the efficient use of space to the sustainable material choices, earned the Augusta Treehouse a Highly Commended Award for New Home up to 150m² and a Regional Kaitiakitanga Award at the 2024 Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) awards.     ACCOMMODATIONS | Retreat | The Gilay Estate is a 40 m², off-grid luxury accommodation designed by Cameron Anderson Architects (CAARCH). Located in Quirindi, New South Wales, Australia, the project was completed in 2024 and is available for short-term stays. The estate is a minimalist, single-story retreat that honors the local landscape and incorporates sustainable, self-sufficient features. The name "Gilay" is the Gomeroi word for moon, a detail that reflects the design team's consultation with a local Aboriginal Elder during the process. The structure features a distinctive, sloping sheet metal roof with deep overhangs that protect the building from the harsh Australian sun. This roof form echoes the simple silhouette of a tent or shed, lending a humble, earthy feel. The exterior is clad in charred timber, a nod to the traditional Indigenous practice of fire management and regeneration. The interior uses warm, natural timber, symbolizing regrowth. The 40 m² interior is largely open-plan, with the king-sized bed integrated into the main living space to maximize the experience of the panoramic views.     RESIDENTIAL | House | Located in Moëlan-sur-Mer, France, Maison I is a bioclimatic individual house designed by architect Emilien Robin and completed in 2009. The project was an early commission for Robin, who at the time was part of the firm Boidot Robin architectes urbanistes and had graduated from the Nantes National School of Architecture in 2006.     RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | The Yatsugatake Annex is a 43-square-meter weekend residence in Hokuto, Japan, designed by Takanori Ineyama Architects and completed in 2017. It was built for a couple who primarily live in Tokyo but spend weekends and holidays in the mountainous Yamanashi prefecture, and the home is intended to be a comfortable secondary base for their family of five, including three children. The design is a clever response to the surroundings, where the site is relatively large but still located in an area with villas and residences. To achieve privacy while maintaining a connection to the environment, the architects designed the house to open or close to the surroundings, a strategy described as "closing with one wall". The house is L-shaped and wrapped with a light-toned wooden exterior that conceals the more private areas while creating an open central living area. The layout was designed to give new value to the site by properly placing different personality spaces, such as the living and dining areas, within an environment created by the "one wall". Inside, the home has a minimalist and warm aesthetic, featuring light-toned wooden walls and ceilings. A mezzanine level with an open, airy feel offers unique views and an elevated space for relaxation or play.
