- Selestranda House | bark arkitekter | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | The Selestranda House is a residential renovation and extension project located in Time, Norway, near the scenic southwest coast. Completed in 2016 by bark arkitekter, the project breathed new life into a 50-year-old cottage, originally designed in 1961 by architect Atle Sørby. The renovation successfully balanced the building's historical integrity with the functional demands of modern living. The house sits on a relatively flat plot surrounded by the distinctive landscape of the region, featuring long sloping fields, beaches, and dunes separated by old drystone walls. Its proximity to the shoreline places it within a landscape-preservation area, which meant the architects worked closely with local authorities during the building process. The architectural approach involved respecting the original design while modernizing the interior and expanding the living space. The cottage's original pitched roof with pulled-down gables, a reinterpretation of the traditional "Jærhus" typology, was preserved. This design is crucial for withstanding the harsh local weather conditions. To maintain this connection to the past, local craftsmen carefully removed, stored, and re-laid the original roof tiles, which were sourced from local brick factories. The renovation involved a strategic reorganization of the interior space. The walls and ceiling of the main volume were opened up to create a single large, open-plan common area. This space now accommodates the living, dining, and kitchen functions, creating a bright and expansive atmosphere. A new 88 m² annex was constructed to house private functions. This addition includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and a storage room, allowing for a clearer separation of public and private zones within the home. Large glass windows were installed to maximize natural light and offer the homeowners uninterrupted views of the surrounding coastal scenery. The interior features a minimalist, no-frills aesthetic, with a neutral color palette and light timber finishes creating a calm and functional living space. The architects focused on simple, high-quality materials to complement the building's modest scale. - Polygon Studio | Jeffery S. Poss Architect & Workus | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Studio | The Polygon Studio, a combined sculpture studio and guesthouse, was designed by Jeffery S. Poss Architect and Chicago-based WORKUS Studio for a client with a wooded, steeply sloped lakefront property in New York's Adirondack Mountains. Completed in 2013, the two-story structure was built at the highest elevation of the property, offering tree-filtered views of Lake George from both levels. The design draws on the rural Adirondack vernacular, and its overall form reflects the building's dual purpose. The ground floor, measuring 409 square feet, is dedicated to the sculpture studio. This level features large sliding glass doors, a durable concrete floor, and a tall, light-filled space for creative work, with a tucked-away service area beneath the upper loft. The upper loft serves as a guest room and forms its own gabled volume with a small, cantilevered balcony, offering a private space with elevated views of the lake. The exterior cladding combines galvanized steel siding for the gables and north end with local, milled red cedar for the east and west sides, which adds warmth and references the local vernacular. Inside, the use of locally milled cedar continues on the loft and ceilings, creating a warm, aromatic environment that contrasts with the bright white walls of the studio space. The zigzag roof profile further emphasizes the building's distinct, yet interconnected, interior spaces. Credits Architects: Jeffery S. Designed by the Lyon-based firm Les Archinautes, the cabin was built in place of a previous wooden structure and serves as a base for mountain sports enthusiasts. The design reinterprets principles of local Bohemian Forest architecture, featuring a compact, gabled shape and a rectangular floor plan. The architects placed great emphasis on connecting the cabin with its natural surroundings. The living space centers around a large, square, gabled window that frames views of the lake and the two mountain peaks behind it. Inside, the building's exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel structure creates a warm, cozy atmosphere, bringing the scent, color, and feel of the forest indoors. The exposed wood was treated with hard wax oil with a UV filter to preserve its color over time. The cabin's thoughtful design accommodates both functionality and connection to nature. The ground floor includes a small room, bathroom, laundry room, and a sauna, with additional storage for sports equipment. An attic level features two bedrooms with circular windows, and another bathroom and pantry. The cabin is wrapped by a wooden terrace that is sheltered by the roof's overhang, providing flexible outdoor spaces for relaxing and storage. The construction utilized sustainable methods and local materials, with the wood-intensive build sequestering more CO2 than was produced. - Bučina Cottage | ADR (Aleš Lapka, Petr Kolář) | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cottage | The Bučina Cottage is a contemporary residence for the manager of a ski resort in the village of Horní Malá Úpa, Czech Republic. Completed in 2023 by Prague-based architectural studio ADR, the cottage is inspired by the traditional timber architecture of the Krkonoše National Park region. Form: The cottage adopts an asymmetric cross-shaped plan, drawing on local building traditions. The cross morphology also serves to frame specific views of the surrounding landscape and mountain peaks, including Sněžka and Lysečina. Exterior: The exterior features a ventilated façade clad in unplaned spruce boards, painted a striking red, a color that is historically characteristic of mountain buildings in the area. The roof is covered with a corrugated metal sheet. Interior: The compact yet functional interior, designed for modern living, features a simple material palette. White-painted plaster walls are complemented by exposed structural timber beams, solid spruce flooring, and bespoke furniture crafted from the same material. Layout: Ground floor: The east-facing entrance leads into a vestibule, storage room, and an open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area. First floor: A spiral staircase, wrapped around a log-burning stove, leads to the upper floor, which contains two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a snug. Structural elements: The lightweight, prefabricated timber frame structure rests on a concrete foundation slab. This design allows the cottage to appear to float above the terrain in the summer, while remaining level with the snow cover during the winter. Credits Architects: ADR (Architektura Design Realizace), founded by Aleš Lapka and Petr Kolář. Client: Manager of the Malá Úpa ski resort. - Cabin Knapphullet | Lundhagem | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Knapphullet is a small annex to a family holiday home located in Sandefjord in Norway. It is only 30 square meters, but contains an open living space with a bathroom and a mezzanine bed that sleeps two people. Although the building occupies such a small footprint, the space expands vertically over four levels including a roof terrace. The house nestles between large rocks surrounded by low vegetation, a typical example of Norwegian coastal landscape. The project started with the challenge of how to utilize this naturally sheltered area surrounded by large rocks and dense vegetation. The idea developed into providing a way to climb up from this shelter to see the panoramic view over the sea. An idea that ultimately led to the characteristic shape of the roof; a stepped ramp leading up from the terrain to the top of the roof and connecting to the landscape beyond. Exploring the detailed execution of each materials expands a seemingly restricted material palette. The roof is executed in 270mm thick reinforced concrete with 20mm VIP insulation underneath. The concrete itself is water resistant, thus no additional roofing materials are required. The interior walls are solid 50/50mm oak layered with a natural sawn texture, while the acoustic ceiling is covered with woven oak strips. A long bench is made with the same white concrete as the roof. The bench and the floor extend from the interior to the exterior, thereby tying them together, whilst an external fireplace creates a focal point in the atrium. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_3c45694567ba4553a7ef9c93acde3dcb~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1080,h_1344,al_c,q_85/Cabin%20Knapphullet-lundhagem.no-Ivar%20Kvaal%20(2).jpg Please Wait Cabin Knapphullet-lundhagem.no-Ivar Kvaal (1).jpg Cabin Knapphullet-lundhagem.no-Ivar Kvaal (2).jpg Cabin Knapphullet-lundhagem.no-Ivar Kvaal (3).jpg 1/4 0 Product 6.9K Views 14 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in Cabin Knapphullet Sandefjord, Norway Architects: Lundhagem Lundhagem Architecture Office Norway Area: Year: City: Client: 30 m² 2014 Sandefjord Construction: Category: RESIDENTIAL Project Type: Cabin Post Type: Building Country: Norway Photographers: Ivar Kvaal the Architects Description: Knapphullet is a small annex to a family holiday home located in Sandefjord in Norway. - Kjerringholmen Summerhouse | Line Solgaard Arkitekter | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Completed in 2022, the Kjerringholmen Cabin is a 62-square-meter holiday retreat situated on a small private island in the Hvaler archipelago, Norway. Designed by Line Solgaard Arkitekter, the cabin was conceived as an escape from city life, a philosophy deeply ingrained in Norwegian culture. The structure is elevated on steel pillars, which minimizes its footprint and allows it to coexist with the surrounding rocky terrain and landscape. The cabin's design consists of three interconnected volumes with mono-pitched roofs. Large windows and bay windows are strategically placed to take advantage of commanding southern views toward the Løperen fjord and the Ytre Hvaler National Parks. Clad in ash wood, the cabin blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The interior features an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area that opens onto a central terrace, connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces. The compact design is meticulously planned to maximize functionality and comfort. Due to the island's limited access, the timber structure was prefabricated off-site and transported to the location.
