- Remote Lake Cabin | Stonorov Workshop | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Remote Lake Cabin is a sustainable, off-grid retreat designed by Vermont-based Stonorov Workshop and completed in 2020. It is situated in the heavily wooded Adirondack Mountains of New York, on a lake accessible only by boat, and was designed for a family that has spent summers in the area for generations. The 783-square-foot, two-bedroom cabin was constructed with minimal impact on the environment and stands elevated on stilts, allowing the existing ecosystem to thrive beneath it. To avoid disturbing the forest, construction was carried out with hand tools and smaller equipment, with the firm's partner, Otto Stonorov, hand-building much of the structure using a human-powered chain hoist to raise large timbers. The design is a simple and honest expression of its materials and site. The structure is a wood-clad timber frame joined with steel components, with locally sourced hemlock forming the main frame and white pine used for the siding and floors. Extensive glazing offers panoramic views of the forest and lake, particularly from the master bedroom and a main living area that extends onto a deck through a large window and door. The off-grid property is powered by a solar array located elsewhere on-site, and a sustainable filtration system purifies lake water for in-home use. The interior features a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a central living area, built-in bunk beds in a loft area, and handcrafted elements throughout. Almost all of the furniture, including a dining table with benches and finger-jointed kitchen drawers, was custom-made by Stonorov Workshop. RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2022 in Oaxaca, Mexico, the Plúmula Workshop House is a 70-square-meter project by Espacio 18 Arquitectura that breathes new life into a dilapidated residence to create a functional and poetic live-work space for an artist. The project's name, Plúmula, which refers to the embryonic shoot of a plant, reflects the design's focus on new growth and revitalization. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | A series of cabins - these structures provide accommodation for couples at the bend of river, just north of Bicheno. The buildings establish a strong engagement with the wider site, through a series of interior strategies and plan relationships that create unique and memorable experiences for guests. The compact massing of the exterior form belies a complex and surprising interior structure – heightened by the materiality of the rooms. Connections to the wider site are made to focus certain landscape qualities, which serve to background the occupation of the rooms. The sense of interiority is most strongly experienced in the most intimate parts of the plan, where detailing sets a relief for the seasonal inhabitation of the interiors. - Summer House Gravråk | Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Extension | Completed in 2015, the Summer House Gravråk project is a renovation and extension of a traditional "Nordlandshus" on a remote coastal site near Andopen, in the Flakstad municipality of Norway's Lofoten archipelago. Designed by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk with his team, the 25-square-meter project successfully blends the rehabilitation of the old timber structure with a new, contemporary addition. The design is a sensitive and sophisticated response to the site's stunning yet demanding coastal climate, characterized by spectacular mountains and harsh winds. The original concept involved encasing the weathered timber core within a new protective shell, allowing the old house to stand freely inside. While this initial plan was modified, the final result still features a distinct and respectful relationship between the old and new elements. The built project focuses on the renovation of the existing house and the construction of a westward extension. The addition acts as a "pure extension," echoing the geometrical principles of the original structure, notably its asymmetrical dormer windows, which allow light into the loft and frame views of the landscape. To withstand the extreme wind conditions of the area, the structures are anchored using different methods. The pre-existing Nordlandshus is secured to the ground with guy wires, while the new prefabricated pine glulam extension is wind-anchored to an encompassing concrete slab, which provides a stabilizing counterweight. The material palette chosen for the Summer House Gravråk is both humble and resilient, allowing the building to integrate with its natural surroundings. The addition is clad in untreated spruce, a material selected to develop a natural, gray patina over time as it is exposed to sun and rain. The roof is covered with standing seam zinc roofing, offering durability against the elements. The interior features birch plywood cladding and pine flooring, providing a warm and modern finish. The windows are a two-fold design, with aluminum frames on the exterior for protection and wood on the interior to match the warm timber finishes. An artwork titled "this must be the place" by Swedish artist Jan Håfstrøm is integrated into the design, adding a unique and personal touch. RESIDENTIAL | House | At his residence overlooking Puget Sound, architect James Cutler, a principal at Cutler Anderson Architects, has designed a compact outbuilding that functions as both a creative studio and a gathering space for his daughter and her friends. This unique structure, known as the Studio/Bunkhouse, is located on an island near Seattle. Cutler's vision was to create a modest retreat that would serve dual purposes: a workspace for himself and a fun hangout spot for his youngest daughter during sleepovers. To make room for the new cabin, an old tool shed was demolished. The results are impressive, as the tiny cabin spans just 80 square feet (7.4 square meters). Collaborating with his 12-year-old daughter – his older children having already entered adulthood – Cutler undertook the task of pouring the ready-mix concrete foundation together and constructing the framing from rough-sawn Douglas fir sourced from a nearby sawmill. In designing the cabin, Cutler ensured that the building envelope included rigid insulation, while the exterior walls are adorned with Corten steel shingles, purposefully chosen to complement the surrounding madrone and cedar trees. These shingles were custom-cut and secured using K-lath screws. A highlight of the studio is its west-facing wall, which features a generous expanse of glass that frames sweeping views of the stunning landscape. Overhead, a sloped roof with a deep eave shields the glazed wall from adverse weather conditions. From the main house, a 30-foot (nine-meter) pathway leads to this charming cabin. Inside, the single-room layout showcases exposed timber framing, wooden flooring, and shiplap wall panels. The multifunctional space cleverly accommodates a fold-up bed and desk, both custom-built by a local woodworker. The design incorporates two bunk beds that can fold up on traction struts for the girls, along with a folding desk for dad, allowing the building to be used in versatile ways. When everything is folded against the walls, it transforms into a poker room for dad. For warmth, a highly efficient cast-iron wood stove provides heat, consuming just two blocks of wood throughout a winter night. Additionally, to ensure functionality during power outages, Cutler installed 4.5 kilowatts of batteries and an inverter, which are cleverly concealed behind rolling file cabinets.
