- Cabin Moss | Béres Architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Cabin Moss is a tiny, 40 m² cabin located in the forest of Kőszeg, Hungary, near the Austrian border. Designed by Béres Architects in collaboration with the owner, Attila Hideg, the project was completed in 2021. The cabin is a personal and thoughtful design, intentionally built to be constructed by a single person and to exist in harmonious integration with the surrounding natural landscape. The architects at Béres, led by Attila Béres, adopted the philosophy of "Measure twice, dig once". This principle is evident in the cabin's minimalist design and its minimal impact on the forest ecosystem. The cabin's long, angular form is elevated on slender stilts, a strategic decision that allows it to float above the sloping terrain. This approach preserves the fragile root systems of the hundred-year-old trees on the site, which was a core consideration from the outset. The design is a testament to the "stay small" ethos, emphasizing a comfortable living space without unnecessary square meters or wasted areas. The cabin is oriented to frame views of the natural surroundings while presenting a more closed facade to the nearby road, offering maximum privacy. The cabin's construction is a model of low-impact, sustainable building. By using stilts, the need for extensive digging and foundation work was eliminated, protecting the natural ground. The structure is built with a carefully insulated timber frame using native coniferous wood. The exterior is finished with a rough, gray plaster, which creates a textured and protective shell. The interior features built-in plywood furnishings with a dark surface, offering a sharp contrast to the warm wood of the walls and ceiling. The design prioritizes energy efficiency, relying solely on electricity for heating and hot water, which is achieved with minimal consumption thanks to the high-quality insulation. The 40 m² interior is cleverly arranged to maximize functionality while maintaining an open feel. Connected spaces: The glazed entrance leads directly into the living and dining area, eliminating the need for a separate hallway. The spaces are organized with built-in furniture that doubles as storage, including the kitchen unit, washstand, and a commode in the bedroom. Strategically placed openings frame specific views of the landscape, including a panorama window and the entrance door. Sited on Lake Saimaa, near Savonlinna, the 15-square-meter cabin was designed with a Zen philosophy of ""nothingness,"" stripping the design to its bare minimum to create a space for spiritual and visual focus. At night, the illuminated cabin shines on the lake like a warm candle, a key part of its design concept. The cabin was designed to minimize its impact on the protected nature reserve, and the process of building it reflects this commitment. To avoid damaging the forest vegetation, a temporary road was built for a single day to assemble the prefabricated structure. The vegetation was then restored to its original state once the construction was finished. The structure is primarily composed of cross-laminated timber (CLT), which is exposed on the interior to create a warm, minimalist, and natural aesthetic. HOSPITALITY | Mixed-use | Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan, lies in an austere eastern landscape with an inhospitable climate that can generate temperatures of -35 degrees Celsius in winter and +35 degrees in summer. The Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center is designed to provide the city with a range of civic, cultural and social amenities all sheltered within a climatic envelope - 'a world within' - that offers a comfortable microclimate all year round, whatever the weather. The building's tented structure has great resonance in Kazakh history as the tent is a traditional nomadic building form - Khan Shatyr translates as 'the Tent of the Khan'. Located at the northern end of the city's formal axis, the masted structure soars 150 metres from a 200 x 195-metre elliptical base to form one of the highest peaks on the Astana skyline. Enclosing an area in excess of 100,000 square metres it comprises an urban-scaled park, with a 450-metre jogging track, along with a wide variety of shopping and leisure facilities, including restaurants, cinemas and entertainment spaces that can accommodate a varied programme of events and exhibitions. The park steps up the height of the building in undulating terraces and a water park, with wave pools and slides, weaves its way through the landscape. The tubular-steel tripod structure supports a suspended net of steel radial and circumferential cables, which is clad with a three-layer ETFE envelope, formed as 3.5 x 30-metre cushions - a very light, economical and thermally efficient solution. The translucent material allows daylight to wash the interiors while sheltering them from weather extremes. Specific enclosures within the envelope are air conditioned, but the open circulation areas are environmentally tempered, with target temperatures of +14 degrees Celsius in winter and +29 degrees in summer. Low-level jets direct cool air across the space, while vents at the apex induce natural stack-effect ventilation. The challenge in winter is to prevent ice forming on the inside of the envelope. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Panorama House is a contemporary vacation home designed by Andrew Goodwin Designs for a five-acre property in Yucca Valley, California. Created as a retreat from the fast-paced life of Southern California, the 1,535-square-foot residence features a striking folded roof that creates a dynamic form and captures a 360-degree view of the surrounding desert landscape. The house was built with sustainability in mind, using a light-gauge metal building system to lift the structure off the desert floor. This approach minimizes the building's impact on the delicate desert environment. The simple, monochrome palette of materials allows the desert scenery to be the focal point. The distinctive folding roof design adds visual interest and creates a variation in the angles and lighting throughout the house. Over 1,100 square feet of partially covered deck space extends the living area outdoors. The 1,535-square-foot interior includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living area, kitchen, and laundry room. The home's design and furnishings, which included contributions from designer Julie Park, maintain a desert-modern aesthetic with contemporary colors and textures. Outdoor living: An integrated outdoor fireplace and wood storage are built into the facade, making the exterior decks functional for year-round use. A detached 600-square-foot carport provides shelter for vehicles. Awards and recognition In 2024, the Panorama House was recognized with an Award of Merit at the AIA CCC Design Awards. The award highlights the project's contemporary design and its successful integration into the secluded desert environment. Situated on a steep hillside, the cabin is elevated on stilts to maximize views of the surrounding coastal mountains and historic landscape. Its design was influenced by the site's unique history and melancholy atmosphere, serving as a minimalist mountain hideout for an academic couple. The exterior cladding is made from inexpensive pine planks that have been traditionally charred on-site. This natural, chemical-free process protects the wood from decay, rot, and insects, while also creating a distinct black aesthetic that helps the structure blend into the rugged terrain. The cabin is built from prefabricated structural insulated panels (SIPs), which helped keep costs down and allowed for quick, efficient assembly by a small team. The interior of the cabin is defined by its simplicity and warmth. Plywood panels line the walls, concealing pipes and electrical wiring while providing a cozy finish that contrasts with the exterior. The main living area features a high ceiling that amplifies the sense of space. A black steel ladder provides access to a mezzanine sleeping loft above the kitchenette and wet bath. DRAA / Del Río Arquitectos Asociados is a multi-disciplinary architecture studio founded by Nicolás del Río in Santiago, Chile. Known for its meticulous and thorough approach to design and detailing, the firm focuses on the outcomes of tectonic expression, structural innovation, and responsible integration of materials and energy efficiency. They have a particular focus on projects within mountainous landscapes that fuse modern Andean design with traditional Alpine architecture. With an international reputation for their work, they also maintain offices in Frutillar, Chile, and Berlin, Germany. Clerestory windows in the loft frame panoramic views of the mountains, while a large window in the living area focuses on the valley below. It was built for a couple who primarily live in Tokyo but spend weekends and holidays in the mountainous Yamanashi prefecture, and the home is intended to be a comfortable secondary base for their family of five, including three children. The design is a clever response to the surroundings, where the site is relatively large but still located in an area with villas and residences. To achieve privacy while maintaining a connection to the environment, the architects designed the house to open or close to the surroundings, a strategy described as ""closing with one wall"". The house is L-shaped and wrapped with a light-toned wooden exterior that conceals the more private areas while creating an open central living area. The layout was designed to give new value to the site by properly placing different personality spaces, such as the living and dining areas, within an environment created by the ""one wall"". Inside, the home has a minimalist and warm aesthetic, featuring light-toned wooden walls and ceilings. A mezzanine level with an open, airy feel offers unique views and an elevated space for relaxation or play.
