Completed in 2021, the 90 m² project is located in the forested area of Avándaro in Valle de Bravo, Mexico. The cabin was conceived as a space for its users to disconnect from city life and reconnect with the surrounding nature, with a design that emphasizes warmth, simplicity, and a seamless coexistence between the cabin and the forest. The core concept of the VR Cabin is to offer a serene escape where the user can fully experience the tranquility of their forested environment. This connection is achieved through a deliberate design approach: The cabin's exterior is a simple, solid block, which ensures the natural landscape remains the focal point. In contrast, the interior is richly lined with wood to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The design blurs the line between indoor and outdoor spaces through a series of thoughtful connections. A large front terrace allows occupants to immerse themselves in the surrounding greenery, while the private area features a bathroom and dressing room that open directly to the outdoors. The structure encompasses an area of 18 m² (194 ft²), with an additional 12 m² (129 ft²) dedicated to a separate bathroom. The minimalist and low-maintenance design of Bungalow H prioritizes a connection with its stunning natural surroundings. The concrete structure is painted black, which helps minimize its visual impact on the landscape. The exterior is closed off on three sides to ensure privacy, while the fourth side is a fully glazed façade that frames the breathtaking view. To enhance the sense of lightness and the minimalist aesthetic, the bungalow appears to float slightly above the ground. Designed by Tijuana-based architect Jorge Gracia of Graciastudio, the hotel comprises 20 individual, elevated "eco-lofts" that appear to hover over the hillside, offering both privacy and panoramic views of the wine valley. Located on a 10,000-square-meter plot in the wild landscape of southeastern Mexico, the house is a secluded retreat that encourages contemplation and a close connection to its natural surroundings. The structure is a simple and compact two-story volume set on a platform elevated off the ground. This elevation helps protect against undesirable animals and facilitates construction on the site's rocky terrain, which prevented excavation. The home is strategically oriented to work with the region's dominant winds and sun exposure, ensuring a comfortable interior temperature. The exterior and interior are finished with a rough stucco and an artisanal lime-based paint with mineral pigments, giving the building a natural, reddish tone that blends with the surrounding soil. Regional cedar wood is used for the folding doors and operable louvers, allowing residents to control the amount of privacy and connection to the outdoors. A pre-existing tree provides shade for the swimming pool and terrace, an extension of the interior social area. The compact interior includes a double-height living room with a kitchenette, a sleeping mezzanine, and a bathroom with an outdoor shower. The interior design features a collection of locally crafted design pieces in natural tones that enhance the space's warmth and connection to the region. RESIDENTIAL | Container Home | The c-Home Hudson, a project by LOT-EK completed in 2019, is a single-family modular home constructed from six upcycled 40-foot shipping containers. Located in Claverack, New York, just outside the city of Hudson, the house is a prototype for LOT-EK's c-Home series, which aims to produce sustainable, design-forward homes from reclaimed materials. The 1,920-square-foot residence features a straightforward design, with the containers arranged in a 3-by-2 stack to form a two-story volume. The design is notable for its use of the shipping containers' original material and industrial aesthetic. Large, triangular-shaped cuts were made into the corrugated steel shells and replaced with expansive glass walls, creating a striking visual contrast and allowing for abundant natural light and ventilation. These geometric cuts not only define the facade but also extend to form the front and rear decks, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor living spaces. To navigate the site's legal size limits—a maximum built-up area of 50 m² and a maximum height of 5 meters the architects designed a clever floor plan that maximizes usable space. The clustered cabins appear like a small settlement or cluster of sheds. This approach breaks up the mass of the building while organizing different functions. Despite its small size, the cottage offers abundant views. Large windows in the kitchen and bedroom overlook the pond, while the living space opens toward a stand of mature oak trees on the other side. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Cabin | Designed by Javier Mera Luna in collaboration with Lesly Villagrán and María Beatriz Moncayo, "Arrachay 01" is a 25-square-meter workspace cabin perched over 4,000 meters above sea level in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. Completed in 2020, the project was conceived as an auto-commissioned "workation" retreat to challenge new ways of working remotely in a stunning natural setting. The name "Arrachay" is a playful nod to the local Quichua language, combining achachay ("very cold") and arrarray ("very hot," referencing nearby thermal pools) to capture the contrast of the extreme mountain climate. The main architectural challenge was to create efficient insulation in the cold, high-altitude climate without relying on petroleum-based materials, which aligned with the architects' goal for a minimal carbon footprint. To achieve this, the team collaborated with YES Innovation to develop and utilize BIOM, a biosource insulation made from rice fibers. This innovative material repurposes agricultural waste from coastal communities in Ecuador, creating a circular economy. The BIOM insulation was hand-packed into the wooden perimeter structure and treated with a natural fire retardant, ensuring high thermal performance despite wide temperature variations. The use of bulk insulation also helps optimize on-site installation and prevent thermal bridging. The cabin’s timber structure is designed to be flexible and adaptive, blending harmoniously with the cloud-cloaked, mountainous landscape. A large window wall provides a visual connection to the breathtaking natural surroundings. The project embodies a philosophy of incorporating local technology and addressing environmental challenges through small-scale, thoughtful architecture. RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Nestled into a sloping, forested site in the Swiss Alps, the Holiday House Aulina is a compact and refined 53-square-meter cabin designed by Oliver Christen Architekten. Built in 2021 as a replacement for an older structure, the house is located in the Flumserberg-Bergheim area, where it offers its inhabitants almost uninterrupted views of the surrounding woodland, mountains, and Lake Walen. The design concept likens the compact building to a "casket," carefully blending it into the landscape. The exterior is a striking, dark wooden volume with a classic gabled roof. The vertical charred-wood cladding is arranged at different depths, creating a rich texture that changes depending on the light and the viewer's perspective. The facade has a changeable character, thanks to foldable wooden shutters on the ground floor. When the house is unoccupied, these shutters can be closed, making the house appear more reserved and protected. When the owners are present, the shutters open to connect the interior with the surrounding scenery. In stark contrast to the dark exterior, the interior is bright and minimalist, defined by the use of light birch plywood surfaces. This choice of material creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, with built-in storage and joinery seamlessly integrated into the walls to maximize space. The floor plan is organized vertically, with a "reversed" layout. The ground floor contains the bedrooms, a bathroom, and a workspace, while the upper floor is dedicated to the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
