  • The Olive Tree House | Eva Sopeoglou | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Situated in an olive grove in Halkidiki, Greece, The Olive Tree House is a 21-square-meter prefabricated summer house designed by Eva Sopeoglou Architecture and completed in 2016. The project was conceived as a low-maintenance, eco-conscious weekend retreat for its client, offering stunning views of the sea and the monasteries of Mount Athos. The design stands out for its creative use of a perforated, olive-green metallic envelope, which wraps around the structure and is inspired by the dappled shade of olive trees. This innovative cladding, developed in collaboration with metal fabricator METALSO, uses a CNC punching machine to create a textile-like pattern with leaf-shaped perforations. As the sun moves, this envelope fills the interior with a dynamic play of light and shadow, blurring the line between inside and outside. The house's rectangular, 3-by-7-meter plan is oriented to the cardinal points, a strategic placement that maximizes shading, natural ventilation, and views. A thin corridor connects the small interior rooms, which include a kitchen and bedroom, and is aligned with the surrounding olive trees. The building's orientation allows each room to have its own character based on the quality and intensity of its shadows, with colorful morning light on the east side and dramatic midday effects from the south. Full-height sliding metal doors allow the internal spaces to open up completely to the landscape, facilitating semi-indoor and outdoor living. To ensure interior comfort, the design relies on natural ventilation, including a sloped roof that helps extract hot air. The prefabricated nature of the components allows the house to be dismantled at any time, leaving a minimal environmental footprint. The project was envisioned to demonstrate an alternative, minimalist way of life, proving that a person needs very little space to live, work, and sleep comfortably. The design is characterized by a stark contrast between its industrial exterior and its warm, inviting interior. The original structure was reclad in weathering steel, known as Corten, which gives the exterior a striking, robust appearance that blends into the industrial character of its surroundings. Inside, the walls and built-in furniture are lined with birch plywood, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Recessed lighting further enhances the sense of warmth and space within the compact dwelling. The small living space is intelligently designed to be highly functional, with clever storage solutions and a versatile layout. The main area combines a living, dining, and sleeping space, featuring a bed surrounded by concealed storage. Narrow picture windows were strategically placed to offer glimpses of the surrounding greenery and the block opposite. A small, contrasting bathroom is included, and a workspace is integrated into the design. Completed in July 2023, the 20-square-meter treehouse-style cabin is part of Altar's broader initiative to create decentralized hotels, offering a glamping experience that uses technology to promote sustainable hospitality. The cabin was constructed with a prefabricated metallic structure to minimize environmental impact and reduce on-site construction time. Elevated on metal pillars to a height of up to four meters, the structure's off-the-ground position reduces its footprint on the landscape, preserves the natural topography, and gives guests expansive views over the surrounding Atlantic Forest and the Joanópolis Reservoir. Inside, the living, kitchen, and bedroom spaces are integrated into a single, light-filled environment, with a strategically placed large opening next to the queen-size bunk bed offering direct and immersive views of the reservoir. The bathroom is illuminated by a zenithal opening, providing views of the sky and treetops from within. The interior and exterior spaces are connected by a generous natural wood deck, where guests can enjoy a leisurely area with furniture, a shower, a barbecue grill, and a space for a bonfire. The project's design prioritizes a rational and sophisticated geometry, with a simple yet elegant aesthetic that seamlessly integrates with the forest environment. A 2022 collaboration with Tok&Stok, which included a line of furniture and decorative items designed by Natureza Urbana, informed the cabin's sustainable ethos. • Huset i Landskabet | Claus Pryds Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | The Huset i Landskabet (House in the Landscape), designed by Danish firm Claus Pryds Architects, is a gabled vacation home located on a southeast-facing slope overlooking the Hesselø Bay in Denmark. Completed in 2019, the house is celebrated for its sensitive integration into the hilly, coastal landscape, reflecting the firm's philosophy of creating "caring architecture" that forms a connection between place, material, and history. The house is designed as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional gabled home, but its form is meticulously adapted to its specific location. The building is positioned close to a steep northern slope, with large windows strategically placed to frame views over the surrounding landscape and bay, making the setting an integral part of the living experience. The interior is arranged as a split-level space, following the natural topography of the land. This creates distinct living zones while maintaining a fluid, open atmosphere and a continuous visual connection with the outdoors. The home features a complex, silvery gabled roofline that is both dramatic and subtle. A central, double-height living area gives way to smaller, more private spaces, with a large, elevated deck that extends the living space outdoors. The design relies on a restrained palette of materials chosen for their durability, elegance, and ability to harmonize with the natural environment. The facade is clad in silvery wood, giving the house a clean, weathered aesthetic that allows it to blend into the coastal landscape. The interior features wood throughout, including CLT (cross-laminated timber) walls and plywood finishes, which give the space a warm, natural, and minimalist feel. The interior design emphasizes clean lines and functional simplicity, ensuring that the focus remains on the expansive views and the surrounding nature. • Lang House | Austin Maynard Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Lang 靚 is a new double storey house in South Yarra, Melbourne, that reflects the owners’ vision for “a wellness-enhancing home that is architectural and inspirational.” The result of exploring “a different sort of mindset,” the design purposely avoids hallways and corridors and instead maximises potential for open space, natural light and greenery, on a relatively small inner-city sized block. Arranged around three distinct garden zones with large openings, the connections between internal and external spaces are interwoven; providing the inhabitants (a family of four) with an ‘airy calmness’, to pursue the things they love - reading, cooking, socialising and kicking a ball in the backyard. With the focus on creativity, efficiency and unique storage solutions, Lang celebrates clutter-free living and ‘forever home’ adaptability. Beyond the equitone cladding and fluted glass frontage the internal space is voluminous and bright, with kitchen, dining and living room expanding the full length, while the width incorporates an internal courtyard garden. A soaring and sculptural curved timber ‘tree-trunk’ contains bathrooms above and below, while the entry features a pull-down Murphy bed, concealed storage and privacy curtains, to pivot as a guest bedroom. Upstairs there is a dedicated laundry and outdoor drying zone, two bedrooms and a bathroom, and a main bedroom, with walk in robe and ensuite. A multipurpose rumpus room occupies the area in between, serving as a playroom for the owner’s two young children, with future potential as a study, teenage hangout or parents’ retreat. THE BRIEF The owners provided a thorough and well-researched brief; specific in their goals, aware of the site limitations and encouraging creative solutions and architectural flair. They were “determined” to live in a home without hallways and corridors,” to avoid feeling boxed or compartmentalised and to circumvent poor ventilation and heat retention in summer. They asked for their home to be highly pragmatic and efficient - in energy, cost and use of space, but also to show uniqueness and creativity. To make “something different.” They wanted multi-functionality, an abundance of natural light and a connection to greenery in every room, as well as a reading nook, concealed study, hidden pantry, lots of storage and a garage (to fit one car and four bicycles). Their suggestions included curved elements, playing with light and shadow, contrasting textures (such as wood and concrete) and creating a void between the two storeys. The owners summarised their brief in three words: ‘Wellbeing. Efficiency. Inspirational.’ TOUGH ON THE OUTSIDE Lang’s external structure is deliberately austere and resilient, befitting its location on a residential street just off the busy main thoroughfare of Punt Road. Clad in durable, anti graffiti, heat resistant equitone, the form is rectilinear grey boxes with sharp edges. The equitone sheet is arranged in a chevron pattern, visually striking and tactile, the owners say “people frequently stop to take photos and touch the walls.” In Chinese and Cantonese, Lang 靚 means ‘pretty’. DELIBERATIVE DESIGN Massed on the western side of the site, the house steps down to the east to protect the neighbour’s light and garden. Analysing and assessing exisiting conditions generated much of the form - the intelligent reaction was to concentrate the height and mass against the adjoining neighbouring bulk on boundary. A slight gradient on the site, sloping from back to front, also leant itself to an internal level change that defines the edge of the living area and becomes a perfect seat (45cm high) in the kitchen and garden. A large fluted glass panel was incorporated into the sheet cement facade, to provide privacy and passive surveillance, whilst allowing for an abundance of natural light. At the rear of the house, the second level (main bedroom) deliberately extends half a metre further out, to provide passive solar shade for the lounge area beneath. SOFT CENTRE In contrast to the tough exterior, the interior is softened by natural timber and tonal materials, lush foliage and gentle curves. A soaring and sculptural timber ‘tree-trunk’ contains the bathrooms above and below, linking the two spaces and creating cohesion. The ground floor area is open plan but subtly nuanced, gently pinched by the bathroom and an internal garden, which is enhanced and magnified with the use of mirror. The garden downstairs is reflected upstairs in the beautiful green ‘Amazon Depths’ (Dulux) colour of the inbuilt cabinetry in the main bedroom. MAXIMISING SPACE The owners were originally concerned that their small inner city block wouldn’t be large enough to create the home they envisaged. To maximise the space horizontally and vertically, large windows and openings were used on three sides while a void was created along the fourth wall. A white perforated steel section of stair continues the transparency of the void, allowing for a further increase in air circulation and volume. With large openings at each end, the garage is an extension of the ground floor space, with budget allocated to the ground material. Rather than a standard slab, concrete sleepers create a flow to extend the courtyard and entertaining area through to the street. A considered extension of space. DETAIL AND CONSIDERATION Architectural involvement in any project is typically evidenced in the detail, and certainly at Lang every detail was thoroughly considered. From the circular light fittings veneered in the same timber as the staircase and cabinetry; to the chevron grey tiles in the ensuite which reference the texture, pattern and colour of exterior facade; to the bedroom light fittings custom powered-coated in soft peach, picking up the colour of the bathroom vanity. There are curved details that add coherence and uniformity, overtly used in the curvature of the timber clad bathroom, the bow of the concrete step, the curtain rail privacy screens and the island bench, and more discreetly in the shape of the shower hand rail and custom cut mirror. Many of the considerations had logic, such as siting the laundry upstairs, closer to the bedrooms and bathrooms. Where a setback was required on the western boundary we created a small balcony directly off the laundry, ideal for an outdoor clothes line and a place, out of sight, to efficiently stack all the services. Though deliberately open plan there are two areas within the ground floor layout that can be curtained off to allow for privacy when required - a reading/study corner and guest accomodation with double bed and dedicated storage. Responding to the brief for clutter-free flexibility, a number of elements are secret, concealed or detailed to appear as flush wall panels. In the entry wall there is a secret door to the garage, and also a concealed cupboard for storing coats, shoes and bags. Within the kitchen /living cabinetry, beside the usual integrated white goods, there is a dedicated wine store, an appliances bench and a sizeable study with shelving and inbuilt desk. Another highly considered detail is the steel support column, brought inside to avoid disrupting the fluted glass window at the front of the house. Appearing more ladder than column by design, it serves an open shelf, for keys and trailing plants. Upstairs, where the need for bedrooms meant ‘cells’ could not be avoided, the doors are full height, floor to ceiling, to create the sense and feeling of having no corridors. • Cabin Knapphullet | Lundhagem | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Knapphullet is a small annex to a family holiday home located in Sandefjord in Norway. It is only 30 square meters, but contains an open living space with a bathroom and a mezzanine bed that sleeps two people. Although the building occupies such a small footprint, the space expands vertically over four levels including a roof terrace. The house nestles between large rocks surrounded by low vegetation, a typical example of Norwegian coastal landscape. The project started with the challenge of how to utilize this naturally sheltered area surrounded by large rocks and dense vegetation. The idea developed into providing a way to climb up from this shelter to see the panoramic view over the sea. An idea that ultimately led to the characteristic shape of the roof; a stepped ramp leading up from the terrain to the top of the roof and connecting to the landscape beyond. Exploring the detailed execution of each materials expands a seemingly restricted material palette. The roof is executed in 270mm thick reinforced concrete with 20mm VIP insulation underneath. The concrete itself is water resistant, thus no additional roofing materials are required. The interior walls are solid 50/50mm oak layered with a natural sawn texture, while the acoustic ceiling is covered with woven oak strips. A long bench is made with the same white concrete as the roof. The bench and the floor extend from the interior to the exterior, thereby tying them together, whilst an external fireplace creates a focal point in the atrium. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_3c45694567ba4553a7ef9c93acde3dcb~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1080,h_1344,al_c,q_85/Cabin%20Knapphullet-lundhagem.no-Ivar%20Kvaal%20(2).jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 6.9K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Cabin Knapphullet Sandefjord, Norway lundhagem.no Source: Published on Feb 24, 2024 by: Media Micro Homes Premium Member More Buildings from Norway Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Lundhagem Norway Category: RESIDENTIAL Cabin Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Norway Ivar Kvaal Photographers: Architects: Lundhagem Area: 30 m² Year: 2014 City: Sandefjord Construction: Client Description: the Architects Text description by Knapphullet is a small annex to a family holiday home located in Sandefjord in Norway. • Heavenly Highlands | Casalvolone Arquitectura | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The Heavenly Highlands, a 150-square-meter family residence completed in 2021, is a masterful work by Costa Rican firm Casalvolone Arquitectura. Nestled in the lush hills near San Jose de Mayo, the project embodies a serene fusion of modern architecture and traditional building techniques, creating a shaded retreat that harmonizes with its vibrant natural setting. The design of Heavenly Highlands emphasizes a profound connection with nature. More than 300 trees were planted on the property as part of the project, allowing the residence to blend seamlessly into the dense surrounding vegetation. The architecture is a study in contrasts, where the elegant black exterior, chosen to integrate with the forest, meets the warm, welcoming interior. Expansive panoramic windows offer inhabitants unobstructed views of the jungle, establishing a peaceful refuge from daily life. The black exterior serves as a cool, shaded skin for the building, contrasting with the warmth of the interior. The architects chose a signature use of exposed concrete, balancing its modern aesthetic with the organic, warm wood that dominates the indoor spaces. The incorporation of vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and farm animals contributes to the property's self-sufficiency and deepens its connection to the natural world. A carefully chosen palette of materials reflects both modern design sensibilities and a respect for regional heritage and local talent. The interior is defined by warm wooden decor sourced from the forests of the Osa Peninsula, a material prized for its strength and durability. This creates a cozy, relaxing atmosphere throughout the home. Floors are crafted with intricate mosaics and terrazo tiles, adding an artistic flourish that celebrates the rich cultural traditions of the region. Furniture for the kitchen, bathrooms, and other areas was created by local artisans, showcasing local talent and craftsmanship. • Skylight Hut | Atelier Hajný | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | Skylight Hut is a renovated countryside retreat located in a recreational area in the Sázava River region, near Prague in the Czech Republic. Designed by Atelier Hajný and completed in 2024, the project transformed a derelict, 1970s single-story hut into a contemporary and airy two-story home. The clients, a couple from Prague, wanted a tranquil escape for weekends and remote work, but faced challenges from strict local zoning regulations. Atelier Hajný's design solution addressed the need for more space while adhering to a maximum height limit of 7.7 meters. The most distinctive feature is the truncated, asymmetrical hip roof, topped with a pair of skylights. This design minimized the building's overall height and prevented it from blocking the views of neighboring properties. The architects kept the original 1970s stone base, stripping the building to its foundation. A new, modern metal structure was then built upon this base, supported by a concrete slab and concealed pillars. The trapezoidal metal sheeting that clads the roof and façade gives the home a modern look while offering durability and minimal upkeep. The dark color helps the structure blend with the natural surroundings. The skylights not only provide natural light but also enable chimney ventilation, which, combined with a significant roof overhang, helps regulate the indoor climate throughout the year. Inside the 46-square-meter cabin, the design maximizes space and light to create a cozy and warm atmosphere. The interior is defined by an extensive use of light pine plywood with a prominent grain, which covers the walls, ceilings, and custom furniture. This contrasts with the dark, minimalist exterior, creating a brighter indoor environment. he ground floor features an open-plan layout connecting the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Large windows on the south and east sides provide dynamic views and flood the space with natural light. An attic bedroom is nestled under the asymmetrical roof, illuminated by the innovative skylight system. A small fireplace adds extra warmth and coziness to the main living area. The bathroom has a simple and modern aesthetic, with a gray plaster finish. Completed in 2023, the family home was built on the site of a holiday cabin that the client had frequented since childhood. As the surrounding area began to change with new zoning plans favoring family houses, the original, beloved hut was destined for demolition. To honor the client's nostalgic connection to the site, Atelier Hajný designed a new, modern home that subtly referenced the shape and appearance of the old cabins. The design for the 180-square-meter home successfully balances the sentimental and the contemporary. The house's elongated, gabled form, with its prominent roof and overhangs, reflects the familiar shape of the traditional huts once common in the area. The building appears as a single-family dwelling, but it is cleverly designed to contain two standalone studio apartments on the ground floor, in addition to the main two-story home. The exterior is clad in charred timber, a durable and natural material that gives the house a rustic yet modern aesthetic. Light wooden shading slats on the gable ends add visual interest and regulate sunlight. Integration with nature: A cantilevered balcony provides a sheltered outdoor space, while the design's overall form harmonizes with the changing character of the landscape. The 180-square-meter interior is designed to be warm, functional, and filled with natural light. Exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels provide a warm, natural contrast to the darker facade. The ground floor contains the entrances to the two studio apartments, a technical area, and the main living room with an integrated kitchen. The upper floor is dedicated to the main apartment's private quarters, including bedrooms, a study, and a bathroom. Custom built-in furniture, including cabinetry made from oak and birch veneer, helps to optimize space and maintain a clean, uncluttered look. The Hut-Inspired House was designed with energy efficiency and modern comfort in mind. Features include: Electric underfloor heating. Recuperative air conditioning. Materials chosen for durability and sustainability, such as charred wood and CLT panels.
