RESIDENTIAL | Studio | Located in the Berhampore suburb of Wellington, New Zealand, the Herald Garden Studio is a 183-square-foot timber-framed structure designed by Parsonson Architects to provide additional, flexible living space for a family in a compact Victorian cottage. Sited at the southern end of the property, the studio was conceived as a multi-purpose retreat, capable of functioning as a children's playroom, a quiet study, or extra guest accommodation as the family's young sons grow. The design is sensitive to its surroundings, with the studio sitting lightly on timber piles to minimize its impact and allow the deck to wrap around an existing olive tree. A sheltered, triangulated pergola and deck connect the new studio to the main house both physically and visually, stitching the two structures together while reinforcing the connection to the lush garden. The studio faces north to maximize natural light throughout the day, while the pergola helps to screen the interior from high summer sun. Inside, the material palette is raw, simple, and eco-conscious. The structure and internal linings are made entirely of wood, including zero-formaldehyde Strandboard finished with natural WOCA oil. This choice of materials lends a minimalist interior and aligns with the project's sustainable principles. The compact floor plan includes a main living area, a tucked-away bathroom and storage space at the rear, and a mezzanine level for sleeping, playing, or storage. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE | Medical Research Institute | This research and diagnostic centre, located in Lisbon, is a state-of-the art facility guided by some of the best scientists in the world today. the site is a truly extraordinary sweep of land, just where the river joins the Atlantic Ocean – the point from which Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and the other great Portuguese pioneers left on their journeys into the unknown. Located in Claverack, New York, just outside the city of Hudson, the house is a prototype for LOT-EK's c-Home series, which aims to produce sustainable, design-forward homes from reclaimed materials. The 1,920-square-foot residence features a straightforward design, with the containers arranged in a 3-by-2 stack to form a two-story volume. The design is notable for its use of the shipping containers' original material and industrial aesthetic. Large, triangular-shaped cuts were made into the corrugated steel shells and replaced with expansive glass walls, creating a striking visual contrast and allowing for abundant natural light and ventilation. These geometric cuts not only define the facade but also extend to form the front and rear decks, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The first floor includes an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. Upstairs, the two bedrooms function as private suites, each with its own staircase, a full bathroom, and a walk-in closet. An external staircase leads to a green roof and deck, adding further outdoor space. The house also retains much of the containers' original character, with exposed steel and the wooden flooring on the interior. The pre-fabricated construction method allowed the house to be assembled on-site quickly, with the modules built off-site and then delivered and stacked into place.
