RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Soorts Cabin, designed by formalocal, is an extension to an existing house in Soorts-Hossegor, France, completed in 2023. Situated in a garden with pine and cork oak trees, the 43-square-meter cabin was conceived as a detached bedroom raised on stilts. This elevated position and the construction method were chosen to minimize the environmental impact on the existing vegetation and soil. The structure was built using glued laminated timber frames and screw piles, allowing for a lightweight and non-invasive foundation. This approach facilitated construction with minimal disturbance to the natural surroundings. The cabin is part of a larger project, which also included a renovation of the main Soorts House, reflecting a sensitive, site-specific approach to architecture. The design creates a harmonious relationship between the new structure and the natural landscape, offering a secluded and elevated living space among the trees. As a teenager, he submerged himself in skateboard culture and graffiti art, the foundation of the detailed, bold yet whimsical imagery so imminent in his work today. After studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris he joined Fabrica in 1997, the Benetton-funded design and communication academy, working closely with the legendary image-maker and agitator Oliverio Toscani. In a short time he was promoted from student to head of their Design Department. Eight years later, Jaime broke out on his own, first with his collections of designer toys, ceramics and furniture, later followed by interior design and installations. Completed in 2020, the 90-square-meter cabin was thoughtfully designed to minimize its impact on the natural environment and to foster a deep connection with the surrounding wild forest and water. The structure of Villa Rauhanniemi, a wood and glass building, is elevated on a platform that both provides stability and serves as a wraparound balcony, allowing the family to live as much outdoors as possible. To construct the home with minimal disruption to the forest, large machinery was not permitted on-site, and materials had to be carried in by hand. The trees removed during construction were repurposed to create the outdoor benches. Large panoramic windows were incorporated to blur the line between interior and exterior, framing spectacular views of the lake and ensuring that each room feels spacious despite the home's compact size. Reflecting Laajisto's Scandinavian design philosophy of not cluttering the world with unnecessary things, the interior is crafted from a warm, natural material palette that includes Douglas fir, light pine, and oak. Wide oak floorboards provide a sense of refined rusticity, while grey marble countertops and a fireplace in the living area add warmth and sophistication. The kitchen was intentionally kept simple and stripped back to maintain the character of a cabin rather than a residential home. In a nod to a classic Finnish feature, the house includes a sauna, which, along with the bathroom, is adorned with deep red tiles in a herringbone pattern. Villa Rauhanniemi was also conceived with sustainability in mind. Laajisto and her family own the adjacent plot of land, which they maintain as a wild forest and a carbon sink to balance the home's footprint. - Clifton House | ASSEMBLY Architecture & Build | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | We designed this modern home to fit the scale of the neighborhood, which was mostly one-story bungalows. The house is conceived of as two small cabins. The front cabin is a one-story structure that faces the street and keeps with the scale of the block. It houses the living room, kitchen, and dining room, while a small bump-out at the front allows for a wood burning stove and built-in media cabinet. The back cabin is a two-story structure that contains the bedrooms, bathrooms, a small office and laundry. The upper level of the back cabin houses the primary bedroom with views over the Biltmore Estate grounds. Between the two cabins is the entrance. With dark wood walls and a small built-in bench under a circular window there is an undeniable tea-house vibe as you enter the home. When designing the home, we went for a “warm” modernism. We love the clean lines and thoughtful composition of modernism, but did not want the house to feel cold or sterile. As such, we included a number of custom built-ins and plenty of naturally finished wood walls and ceilings. The kitchen has white oak cabinets with birch walls and oak floor. The primary bathroom has an arched shower, birch ceiling, and skylights. The end result is both modern and inviting. We were also really lucky to have an amazing client in Everyday Oil owner Emma Allen. We worked with her to select handmade tiles for the bathrooms and kitchen backsplash and she did an amazing job of sourcing all the interior furniture and bed sets. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_202c0c4ab1604a40b3c6a36ecbb597a5~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1030,h_686,al_c,q_85/31.Clifton%20Street%20House-ASSEMBLY-Sadie%20Culberson%20(1).jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 4.5K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Clifton House Asheville, NC, USA assemblyab.com Source: Published on Sep 12, 2025 by: Media Micro Homes Premium Member NH VT RI NJ DE MD DC MA CT HI AK FL ME NY PA VA WV OH IN IL WI NC TN AR MO GA SC KY AL LA MS IA MN OK TX NM KS NE SD ND WY MT CO UT AZ NV OR WA ID CA MI More Buildings from United States Facts: Up Up Architecture Office ASSEMBLY United States Category: RESIDENTIAL House Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: United States Sadie Culberson Photographers: Architects: ASSEMBLY Architecture & Build Area: - Year: 2021 City: Asheville, NC Construction: - Client Description: the Architects Text description by We designed this modern home to fit the scale of the neighborhood, which was mostly one-story bungalows. - Wauhaus Cabin | Hello Wood | ZHIG
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Cabin | The Wauhaus Cabin is a minimalist, 20-square-meter retreat designed and built by the Hungarian studio Hello Wood. Completed in 2021, the cabin is situated on a steep hillside in the Zala County hills of Hungary, appearing to float above the ground on stilts of varying lengths. The playful design, inspired by treehouses, offers a new perspective on the surrounding landscape and functions as a guest house, study, or glamping accommodation. The exterior is clad in graphite gray larch planking, creating a contemporary, clean look that contrasts with the warm interior. A narrow bridge provides access to the entrance, where it widens to form a small terrace. Inside, the space is completely covered in natural birch plywood, with oak flooring, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. A key feature is the large, floor-to-ceiling window at one end, which acts as a "fourth wall" and allows the landscape to define the mood of the interior by projecting different colors and light throughout the seasons. Additional round windows add a playful element to the design. Despite its compact size, the Wauhaus features a small kitchenette, and sliding birch plywood doors conceal the bathroom and cabinet, maximizing the use of the limited space. True to Hello Wood's focus on sustainable and durable construction, the cabin is built with eco-friendly materials and is designed for all-season use, promising to last for decades.
