Situated in a protected forest near Aarhus, Denmark, the cabin is a contemporary interpretation of the classic woodland cabin, designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. It was built on the existing plinth of a previous summer house, adhering to the area's strict building regulations. The client, a writer, sought an inspirational workspace that offered a close connection to nature, rather than a traditional holiday home. This focus on work over residence is reflected in the layout, which dedicates most of the space to a large, flexible living and studio area, with only a small sleeping loft and bathroom. The design emphasizes the transition between inside and out. Large, sliding glass doors allow the interior to extend onto an outdoor terrace, a feature that allows the writer to work in direct connection with the forest. The exterior is clad in a dark, reddish-brown copper, chosen to blend with the trunks of the surrounding beech trees and a nearby lake. This copper façade will naturally patinate over time, gradually turning green to further integrate the structure into the landscape. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural. The flooring, a mottled aggregate concrete, mimics the forest floor and extends out onto the terrace to blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. The interior is dominated by Douglas fir wood from Danish manufacturer Dinesen, used for the ceilings, built-in furniture, kitchen, staircase, and the home's walls, which are also lined with bookcases. In a splash of vibrant color, the fireplace is painted in a deep, electric blue. The project also features sustainable measures, including geothermal heating and an efficient use of materials, where leftover wood planks were used for additional furnishings. The house was conceived as part one of a two-stage plan, and its design takes cues from the region's rural vernacular while providing a contemporary and dynamic living space. Drawing inspiration from a traditional rural shed, the architects utilized a simple, dark Colorsteel skin that wraps over the walls and roof of the building. The modest structure is given a modern twist through a highly sculptural Exterior: The simple shed form is reinterpreted with a gable roof running diagonally across the building, creating dynamic elevations that echo the surrounding mountain landscape. The asymmetrical ridgeline follows the contour of the land and provides variation in the internal ceiling heights. Dark, recessive tones were chosen for the walls, roof, and window frames to help the home nestle discreetly into its impressive natural environment. Interior: In contrast to the robust, protective exterior, the interior offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. Recessed areas, such as the porches and entry, are lined with honey-colored plywood, extending the interior outwards and creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection. The same warm-toned plywood lines the interior walls and ceilings, creating a sense of enclosure and coziness. Space optimization: The 156-square-meter home is designed for efficiency and flexibility. Its layout features numerous cleverly designed niches and hidden storage areas, including a mezzanine study accessed by a ladder above the dining area. Polished concrete floors provide a resilient base and help absorb warmth. Awards and recognition Despite its modest size and budget, the sophisticated design of Tom's House has been recognized with multiple awards: 2016 Home of the Year: Best Small Home (New Zealand). 2016 New Zealand Architecture Awards: Housing. 2016 Southern Architecture Awards: Winner. RESIDENTIAL | House | GZ1 House, designed by Paul Steel Bouza Arquitecto and completed in 2017, is a 65-square-meter mountain retreat located on a peninsula in Lonconaos Lake, near Futaleufú in the Chilean Patagonia. The design is a direct response to the area's challenging weather and stunning landscape, strategically orienting the home to frame the lake's main view while leaving everything else behind. The house features an "A" shape in its floor plan, with a narrow back section dedicated to service rooms and utilities. In contrast, the living room and main bedroom are situated at the front, opening onto a terrace directly above the lake. A full glass wall connects the main living space and bedroom to the terrace, providing an unobstructed and immersive view of the water and surrounding greenery. The entrance to the house is through a small backyard with an acrylic roof, offering a sheltered entryway. The house is built primarily of wood, a material chosen for its ability to withstand the extreme climatic conditions of the region. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Alex Guesthouse is a sculptural and cinematic retreat designed by the Ghent-based firm Atelier Vens Vanbelle for a client in the film industry. Located in the idyllic Uitbergen region of East Flanders, Belgium, the project was created with a single directive: to build something that his guests would remember forever. The guesthouse was completed in 2020. The design is a sequence of unfolding experiences that take guests on a journey from the familiar to the surreal. Guests enter the main house, walk through a garden and bicycle shed, and descend a staircase into a long, disorienting, and dark underground corridor. The journey culminates in the guesthouse itself, which is reached via a spiral staircase that rises from the basement. RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Completed in 2008, the Sommarhus at Stora Gasmora is a 115-square-meter summerhouse located on the Gasmora peninsula of Fårö, an island off the coast of Sweden. Designed by LLP Arkitektkontor, the house sits on a field surrounded by open plateaus and meadows, situated between the Baltic Sea and a historic 15th-century mansion. The design is a modern interpretation of the area's agricultural architecture, featuring a barn-like facade and gabled roof. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Hemp House by earthtopeoplestudio is an eco-conscious rehabilitation of an abandoned 1930s cabin in the Schoharie Valley, New York, led by Brittany and Jordan Weller, who subsequently founded the design studio Earth to People. The couple originally intended to build a new straw-bale house but instead chose a mindful, preservation-focused approach to revive the existing, dilapidated structure. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Cabin in Leningrad is a tiny, barn-style dwelling designed by Russian designer and architect Aleksey Uljanochkin. Located in the rural Leningrad province of Russia, the project explores modern, minimalistic living within a compact, year-round cabin. The cabin measures 45 square meters (484 square feet) and includes an additional 18 square meters (200 square feet) of terrace space. The design features a modern, clean aesthetic, utilizing monochromatic black and natural wood materials. This helps the cabin blend into its rural surroundings. The interior is designed to be cozy yet contemporary. A simple palette of black, natural woods, and textured materials creates a modern vibe that does not compete with the natural environment. The living room features panoramic windows on both sides, allowing for ample natural light and extensive views of the landscape. The cabin's floor plan includes a small kitchen and a dining table adjacent to the living room. It also has a bedroom and a bathroom. The design concept is a globe shattered into fragments and then reassembled. The interlocking of three of these fragments—representing earth, air, and water—comprise the building’s form. SHELTERS | Cabin | La Pointe is a ready-to-camp micro-shelter designed by the Montreal-based architecture firm Atelier l'Abri for the Poisson Blanc Regional Park, located north of Ottawa in Quebec, Canada. This off-grid, A-frame-inspired cabin offers a unique and minimalist nature immersion for two to four guests. The project was completed in 2019. The design reinterprets the classic A-frame cabin, popular in North America since the 1950s, with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. The iconic triangular shape creates a simple, sculptural structure while offering a functional and nature-oriented space. The off-grid shelter was built on-site by Atelier l'Abri's construction team, demonstrating a commitment to hands-on, site-specific design. The structure is clad in natural cedar board and batten, which will weather over time to a silvery hue, helping it blend into the forest. A covered terrace expands the living space, creating an ideal spot to enjoy the outdoors even when the weather is less favorable. The long roof is clad in steel, a nod to timeless, rural buildings. The minimalist and efficient interior makes clever use of space and maximizes natural light. Large bay windows offer uninterrupted views of the forest and the reservoir below, flooding the interior with light. An inclined ladder leads to a lofted bed area, which is suspended from the cathedral ceiling by steel rods, creating a focal point in the space. Affectionately dubbed "La Niche" (The Nook or Kennel) by its owners, the cabin's design features elements that evoke the image of a doghouse, such as its simple, gabled shape and arched doorway. Completed in 2024, the 60-square-meter (650-square-foot) cabin is distinguished by its understated elegance and minimalist design. It is part of the larger Kanata Tremblant estate, offering visitors a unique experience within a 3,000-acre wilderness area. An arched doorway frames views of the Boreal forest, while a high cathedral ceiling and natural light create a sense of spaciousness within the modest interior. The exterior is clad in horizontal wood slabs, which will weather to a silver tone over time, allowing the cabin to blend seamlessly with the surrounding deciduous forest.
