RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | The 600-square-foot Cabin K, also known as Saimaa Cabin, is a summer retreat in Finland designed by Seattle-based Studio Kamppari and completed around 2016. Perched on a granite ridge in a high-latitude pine forest, the cabin was built as a guest cabin and owner's retreat for an engineer who wanted to host his extended family and reconnect with the natural landscape. The design is a modern take on the traditional Finnish log cabin, blending traditional forms with contemporary details and focusing on natural light and open space. To minimize the impact on the site, which included a delicate landscape on a narrow ridge, the cabin's logs and window assemblies were prefabricated off-site and lifted into place by a crane. Built on post foundations, the cabin combines the traditional gable roof and log walls of Finnish cabins with unexpected details, volume, and quality of light. Locally sourced materials were used to complete the project on a limited budget. The exterior is protected from the elements by vertical pine screening treated with iron oxide, which accelerates the natural graying of the wood. The interior, in contrast, features untreated pine log walls and bare roof rafters, creating a warm and rustic aesthetic. The layout includes a double-height living room with oversized operable windows on the north and south sides that frame panoramic views of the forest and Lake Saimaa, blending the indoors with the outdoors. A whimsical, treehouse-like loft provides a cozy retreat, and two generous bedrooms bookend the living space. STUDIOS | Cabin | Pine Nut Cabane, designed by Daab Design, is a timber-clad retreat set within a pine forest and olive grove near Marseille, France. Created for a multi-generational family, the cabin serves as a guest studio, artist's workspace, and rural escape. Its design prioritizes flexibility and a deep connection to its natural surroundings. The minimalist design, with its simple volume and use of local materials, references traditional regional farming architecture. The cabin is intended as a subtle, understated space that enhances the client's favorite spot on their property, a place for painting and playing pétanque. The 35 m² cabin is carefully positioned on a rural property outside Marseille, hidden from both the main farmhouse and local roads. It is oriented to the east to capture the gentle morning sunlight and offer expansive valley views. A dense pine forest on the south side provides natural shading from the intense Mediterranean sun. The cabin is clad in scorched pine, a durable, locally sourced material that allows the structure to blend with the forest landscape. The interior features a combination of light plywood panels, matte-black surfaces, and polished concrete floors. This provides a tranquil, balanced atmosphere that contrasts with the bright outdoor light. The design incorporates deep eaves, high-spec double glazing, and cross-ventilation to minimize heat gain and keep the interior cool naturally. The polished concrete floor is integral to the thermal heating and cooling strategy. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Lucia Smart Cabin is a 24-square-meter glass-and-steel modular unit designed in 2019 by Finnish firm Pirinen Salo Oy for the glass construction company Savon Lasituote Oy. Conceived as a high-quality "hideout" or experiential space, the cabin was created to offer occupants uninterrupted, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the sky. The initial prototype was installed in Inari, Finland, near Juutuanvuono Lake, with an almost 360-degree vista of the riverside site. A core principle of the design is seamless integration with nature. This is achieved through its mirrored glass exterior, which reflects the environment and makes the cabin appear to blend in with the trees. The sleek black steel frame and floor ribbon also minimize the visual impact on the landscape. The interior is designed to draw attention outwards, with uniform colors and materials that do not distract from the external view. The triangular shape of the steel beam structure and the angle of the glass surfaces are precisely calculated to optimize sightlines, especially for someone lying in bed. The 750-square-foot cabin was designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig for a family that has owned land in the area for generations. The compact, vertical design was intended to foster intimacy and connection, both with each other and with the surrounding forests of central Vermont. Conceived as a modern and low-impact alternative to camping, the huts were designed for a client who wanted to provide guest accommodations on the site of a former RV campground while allowing the landscape to return to its natural state. The cabins sit on oversized steel wheels, a creative solution to local zoning regulations that prohibited permanent structures but permitted RVs. This wheeled foundation elevates the huts a short distance above the meadow, allowing native grasses to grow underneath and minimizing the human footprint on the sensitive environment. The 200-square-foot cabins, completed in 2008, are essentially minimalist, steel-clad boxes on a steel and wood platform. Large, double-paned sliding glass doors at one end of each hut open onto a covered deck, extending the usable space into the outdoors. Inside, the material palette is simple, raw, and inexpensive, featuring cork and plywood left as natural as possible. A lopsided, inverted V-shaped roof with clerestory windows floats above the walls, bringing ample natural light into the compact interior. While the cabins offer a warm, sheltered, and low-tech space, showers and other communal facilities are located in a central barn, reinforcing the project's connection to camping. Created with a small budget and simple construction methods, the cabin serves as a vacation shelter for surfers while exploring minimalist living. The project's intention was to build an affordable, nature-infused dwelling by merging a travel trailer with a larger wooden construction. With minimal and primitive construction using basic tools, the design explores what is essential for a "magical holiday shelter". The cabin is located in Aposentillo, a rural surfing village on Nicaragua's northern Pacific coast. After traveling down the Pacific Coast in search of the perfect wave, Serrano purchased a half-acre plot and began the project, which was partially inspired by a four-month period of living exclusively out of his camper. The structure is built primarily from locally sourced teak wood and assembled with simple metal joints. A neighboring carpenter provided wood cuts, and a local welder fabricated the metal joist hangers. The exterior features a gently pitched, corrugated steel roof that protects the home from the rain and allows for ventilation. The camper itself was detached from its truck and placed on stilts, becoming the home's bedroom. The main living space, kitchen, and bathroom are housed within the new timber frame. A sliding teak and fabric partition allows the main living area to open entirely to the surrounding landscape, blurring the line between interior and exterior. The area beneath the raised camper is used for storage, primarily for surfboards. Windows on the back facade are covered by wooden panels that can be raised and lowered using ropes and pulleys. RESIDENTIAL | Retreat | The Sawmill Treehouse is an elevated, steel-clad cabin designed by Australian architect Robbie Walker in the rural Victorian High Country. It was created as a compact residential retreat for a client who valued a deep connection with nature and sought a sustainable escape to share with family and friends. Located in Sawmill Settlement, a leafy, alpine environment at the base of Mount Buller, the cabin is perched above a gully where street water discharges during large storms. The design is a clever response to the challenging site. The structure is elevated on four slim, steel columns that mimic the surrounding tree trunks, allowing water and wildlife to pass freely underneath. The single-story, rectangular cabin is wrapped in a skin of dark, weathered steel slats chosen for their durability in a bushfire-prone area (BAL 40 zone). These slats function as a rainscreen, providing shade and allowing air to circulate, which helps passively cool the building in the hot Australian summer, eliminating the need for air conditioning. Inside, the palette is intentionally pared-back and warm, with floors, walls, and ceilings lined entirely in Victorian ash wood. The compact layout includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and living area. The living space features a full-span glass wall that frames spectacular views of the gully and the surrounding tall trees. The design also incorporates bespoke, built-in furniture designed by Robbie Walker himself. A separate, smaller structure built on a flatter section of the site includes a garage, laundry, and a hidden outdoor kitchen. The project's most significant environmental achievement is its restraint. Despite having ample space, the client chose to build a small, one-bedroom retreat to minimize its impact on the special site. SMALL-SCALE | Boathouse | The HIP Boathouse, designed by Abbott Brown Architects, is a 520-square-foot wooden structure located in Herman's Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Completed in 2021, the project is elevated on stilts above the high-water line, with a viewing porch that cantilevers over the beach. HOSPITALITY | Lodge | Synvillan, which translates to "The Illusion Villa," is a unique hotel room at the Eriksberg Hotel & Nature Reserve in Blekinge, Sweden, designed by Thomas Sandell of the architectural firm Sandellsandberg. The project merges traditional regional architecture with contemporary elements to create a distinctive, nature-focused experience for guests. Completed in 2020, Synvillan offers visitors a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get close to wildlife without disturbing the natural environment. The villa is elevated on pillars, floating four meters above a feeding area for animals in the wildlife park. Its exterior features a striking combination of materials: a thatched roof, inspired by traditional architecture in the Blekinge area, sits atop walls covered in polished, patterned steel plates. This mirrored, dimpled surface reflects the surrounding sky and forest, giving the structure the surreal appearance of almost disappearing into its environment, true to its name. The design is a study in contrasts, juxtaposing the rustic charm of a thatched roof with the high-tech, reflective cladding. Inside, the 50-square-meter accommodation provides a cozy and immersive stay for up to four guests. The two-room unit features a living area, kitchenette, and a furnished terrace. A highlight is the transparent glass floor panel in the living room, which allows visitors to observe animals like European bison, red deer, mouflon, and wild boar feeding directly beneath them. The interiors are lined with pale wood and punctuated with playful, vibrant colors on the ceiling. Inside, the 50-square-meter accommodation provides a cozy and immersive stay for up to four guests. The two-room unit features a living area, kitchenette, and a furnished terrace. A highlight is the transparent glass floor panel in the living room, which allows visitors to observe animals like European bison, red deer, mouflon, and wild boar feeding directly beneath them. The interiors are lined with pale wood and punctuated with playful, vibrant colors on the ceiling. Despite the lack of running water, the villa is powered by solar energy and gas and includes a modern incineration toilet. Access to the elevated cabin is via a long wooden staircase.
