  • Vertikal Nydalen | Snøhetta | ZHIG

COMMERCIAL | Mixed-use building | In the historic industrial area by the river Akerselva in Oslo, Norway, Snøhetta has designed a building that explores the possibilities of the future in ventilation. Named Vertikal Nydalen, the building is a pilot in a research project on more sustainable ventilation and energy solutions and is the very first mixed-use building in Norway with naturally ventilated offices. It results from an interdisciplinary collaboration between engineers and architects and uses innovative architectural and technical solutions. Compared to traditional mechanical ventilation, naturally ventilated offices have less need for remodeling and maintenance and can potentially give a better experience for the users. The 18-floor building hosts restaurants at street level, offices on the following five floors, and apartments on top. Each of the building's 40 apartments is unique, the sizes range from 44 sqm to 143 sqm with a variety of layouts. At the top of the two buildings, Snøhetta has designed roof terraces with a panoramic view of the city and a selection of plants that stimulates micro-habitats for endangered species. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_f0e83646b3fc4d77a5c245502c80f6cc~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1440,h_1498,al_c,q_90/Vertikal%20Nydalen%20(1).jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 6.1K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Vertikal Nydalen Nydalen Allé 13C, 0484 Oslo, Norway snohetta.com Source: Published on Sep 29, 2023 by: Photographer Anna Salonen Premium Member More Buildings from Norway Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Snøhetta Norway Category: COMMERCIAL Mixed-use building Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Norway Photographers: Architects: Snøhetta Area: 11000 m2 Year: 2023 City: Oslo Construction: - Client Avantor Description: the architects Text description by In the historic industrial area by the river Akerselva in Oslo, Norway, Snøhetta has designed a building that explores the possibilities of the future in ventilation. We share our name with a beautiful, remote, and historically important mountain in central Norway. Snøhetta is a place nobody is from, but anyone can experience. Creating places for societies to connect with each other and with the world around them is a primary motivation in our work. Dialogue and diversity empower this approach. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. Since those early projects, many other internationally acclaimed works have been realized around the globe. source: snohetta.com Category Mixed-use building Post Type Building Project Type COMMERCIAL Country Norway Year 2023 Area 11000 m2 Client Avantor Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member Photographer Anna Salonen Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more

This Scandinavian-designed structure features a distinctive black timber exterior and floor-to-ceiling windows, ensuring ample natural light and views of the surrounding landscape. With a total area of 32 m², the cabin accommodates up to four guests and includes heated floors throughout for comfort. Designed explicitly as an offline retreat, Hop Farm Beach is devoid of WiFi and television, encouraging guests to disconnect from digital distractions. A wooden box near the entrance provides a dedicated space for phones during stays, further promoting a focus on relaxation and mindfulness. The interior design emphasizes natural materials and minimal furnishings, creating a serene environment that fosters stillness and a deep connection to the forest. Large windows not only frame picturesque views of the pine trees but also ensure privacy, as the nearest neighbors are located over a kilometer away. This makes them highly adaptable and suitable for remote getaways, resorts, or even as backyard houses. Drawing on Fredskild's experience designing hotels, the Konga cabins blend hotel-level comfort with an immersive outdoor experience. The design focuses on Scandinavian simplicity and minimalism, using a compact footprint to create a functional and inviting space. The interior layout, while minimalist, is thoughtfully designed to maximize space and includes essential amenities, a kitchen, and a sleeping area. The open-plan layout dissolves traditional room boundaries, enhancing the sense of spaciousness. The cabins feature a dark, charred wood exterior, which is both durable and visually striking. Treated with a weather-resistant oil, the charred panels offer longevity and help the structure blend harmoniously with its surroundings. Different-sized windows are strategically placed to offer unique views of the environment from various positions within the cabin, such as while standing, sitting, or lying in bed. The generous use of glazing allows natural light to flood the interiors and creates a strong visual connection to nature. Sustainable design is a core tenet of the Konga cabins. They can be built as fully off-grid houses, powered by a rooftop solar system and equipped with rainwater collection. The cabins also make a conscious effort to minimize environmental impact by incorporating upcycled timber and offcuts from Konga's kitchen production into the construction and interior furnishings. This sustainable and resourceful approach gives each cabin a unique identity. • House Giacomelli Schmid | Caminada Architekten | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The House Giacomelli Schmid, completed in 2016 by Swiss firm Caminada Architekten, is a distinctive family home located in the village of Trin-Mulin, in the Grisons region of Switzerland. Situated amongst a loose arrangement of single-family houses, the house stands out with its powerful yet minimalist architecture, set against the backdrop of an impressive mountain range. The design, characterized by a "hard shell, soft core" approach, is a thoughtful response to both its alpine environment and the clients' needs. The exterior presents a fortress-like shell of raw, vertically-formed concrete. The light color of the concrete is a result of using local cement, giving the structure an authentic, unpretentious feel. This robust outer shell is designed to withstand the harsh alpine climate. In contrast, the interior features a fully wooden core, bringing warmth and a sense of coziness to the living spaces. The house has an almost square footprint and a steep gable roof, reflecting a contemporary take on traditional alpine building. The design is precisely placed within the landscape to maximize views of the impressive mountain scenery. A single-storey annex flanks the main building, anchoring it into the sloping terrain. This addition not only defines the main entrance but also provides two covered parking spaces. The interior is organized around the self-supporting wooden core, which serves as a central hub for the split-level arrangement of the rooms. Rooms are arranged on half-stories around the central core, creating a continuous flow of space and providing access to the different areas. The living and dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dressing room, a library, a studio, and a wine cellar are all cleverly integrated into this layout. The warm, natural wood of the core contrasts beautifully with the raw concrete of the exterior and ceilings, creating a rich tactile and visual experience. The formwork pattern of the concrete walls was created using vertically arranged, standardized large-area formwork, showcasing a meticulous attention to detail. • Waikereru Welcome Shelter | PAC Studio | ZHIG

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Shelter | Nestled in the Waikereru Ecosanctuary near Gisborne, New Zealand, the Waikereru Welcome Shelter is a multi-functional architectural project by PAC Studio that serves as a gateway for visitors exploring the restored native forest. Conceived as a hub for environmental education, the shelter was built in 2015 through an extraordinary community effort, involving 88 volunteers and donations from 88 suppliers. This unique collaborative process allowed for the creation of a piece of public architecture with minimal architectural resources. The shelter's design is inspired by the traditions of the picturesque, featuring an elegant, steel, and architectural fabric canopy that appears to float above three rough-hewn timber boxes. These boxes are strategically positioned to frame specific views of the surrounding hills and valley, creating a sense of dialogue between the built structure and the landscape. The structure's exterior is clad in Abodo's Tundra timber, which was donated for the project. Within the timber enclosures, visitors will find storage space, ablution facilities, and an office for the site ecologist. The simple, honest construction techniques contrast with the refined, floating canopy, creating a unique and timeless feel. A roof deck on one of the enclosures offers a stunning view of the valley and is accessed via a greenwood ladder made from a Manuka tree harvested from the site. In 2020, the project received national recognition, winning a New Zealand Architecture Award for Small Project Architecture. • Fontbunker | Patchwork Architecture | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | Studio | Designed by Wellington-based Patchwork Architecture, the Fontbunker is a small, two-level building that functions as both a creative workspace and a guest retreat on a compact urban property. Created for Kris and Jess Sowersby, the owners of the Klim Type Foundry, the project was a unique expansion that deliberately separates the work and leisure zones from the main home. The design is a clever, vertically organized response to the limited space, with each level having a distinct character. The lower-level workspace, referred to as the "Fontbunker," is partially submerged into the ground and enclosed by an in-situ board-form concrete exterior. The interior of the studio is a focused and calm environment, with windows carefully positioned to allow ample natural light while minimizing glare on the client's extensive book collection. Here, rimu cabinetry floats above a parquet floor, and a large pivoting glass door opens to a small garden space, connecting the interior with the landscape. The upper-level guest accommodation, accessible via an external cantilevered concrete staircase, is a lighter, warmer space. It is clad in black anodized aluminum, which contrasts with the raw concrete of the lower level. Inside, soft and warm materials create a serene atmosphere, with wool carpet, cedar wall and ceiling linings, and leathered stone. The material palette, featuring stone, brass, and timber, visually links the two levels, creating a cohesive building despite their differing functions. Throughout, exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail, including custom bronze fittings by local artist Ben Pearce, imbue the project with a sense of quality and quiet refuge. Completed in 2021, the cabin was conceived as a self-contained getaway to invite its inhabitants into a close relationship with the outdoors while providing a high level of comfort and craftsmanship. Revenue generated from renting the cabin also supports the rewilding of the surrounding farmland to bring back biodiversity and wildlife. The exterior features a rugged, natural aesthetic with a mono-pitched roof made from corrugated metal that protects the structure with generous eaves. It is clad in cedar from a Dartmoor mill and constructed with an exposed Douglas fir frame. To minimize its environmental impact, the cabin is raised off the ground on pier foundations, reducing the need for concrete. Inside, the cabin features an open-plan layout defined by natural materials and meticulous craftsmanship. The interior walls are covered in a breathable clay render, which helps regulate temperature and humidity while providing a pleasing, organic texture. An oak kitchen lines one wall, and a cozy sleeping area is tucked into the gable end. Large, sliding glass doors link the interior with a sweeping larch veranda, expanding the living space to the outdoors.
