  • Przylądek Marzeń | LOOKA studio | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | Tiny Home | Przylądek Marzeń is a coastal retreat project designed by LOOKA studio, combining a passion for travel, nature, luxury, and adventure into five uniquely themed holiday houses. The resort is located in Wieniotowo, Poland, near the Baltic Sea coast, and was built based on the owners' travel experiences and desire to create a perfect, relaxing getaway. The design of the holiday homes aims to combine comfortable accommodation with the surrounding wild nature, with each of the five houses named to evoke a specific feeling: Pasja (Passion), Wolność (Freedom), Spokój (Peace), Oddech (Breath), and Bliskość (Closeness). The homes, each 63 square meters, are equipped to a high hotel standard, and four of them feature private saunas and hot tubs on the terraces. The site's layout was meticulously planned by LOOKA studio, with the houses arranged radially to give each guest a sense of private space, and large terraces offer panoramic views of the surrounding fields and countryside. The project was developed in stages, with the expansion that revealed the Bliskość and Oddech houses being highlighted in mid-2022. In addition to the adult-focused amenities, the resort is designed to be family-friendly, featuring a "Kids Club" with three separate playrooms for different age groups, a large playground, and a bonfire area. The homes are also well-equipped for families, with safety gates on the stairs, baby baths, and high chairs. For active guests, the retreat is situated just 300 meters from the Velo Baltica cycling route and 400 meters from the beach. Guests can also order breakfast baskets filled with local products, which are delivered directly to their homes. • Octothorpe House | Mork-Ulnes Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Octothorpe House is one of the first buildings constructed using cross-laminated timber produced in the United States. Sitting on the site of a forest lost to wildfire two decades ago, the home nods to the place’s history with ashen Shou Sugi Ban cedar board siding and the raw CLT finish of its interior. Formally, four intersecting shed-roofed bars divide the plan into public and private areas. The intersections of the bars form planting courtyards around the building—one fully enclosed at the building’s center and seven semi-enclosed at its perimeter. The narrowness of each bar and generous glazing on opposing walls create a light-filled interior that merges with the outside. • Wooden House CM | Bruno Vanbesien | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The Wooden House CM is a detached, 220 m² family home located in Asse, a suburb of Brussels, Belgium. Designed by architects Bruno Vanbesien and Christophe Meersman, the house was completed in 2011 on a vacant lot situated between two existing homes. The design masterfully balances discretion on its facade with transparency and flexibility on the inside, creating an oasis for its inhabitants. The design of Wooden House CM is a testament to the successful collaboration between the architect and the owner, who was also an architectural assistant. From the street, the home appears deceptively modest. Its facade and roof are uniformly clad in thin strips of tropical afromosia hardwood, which will weather naturally over time. The varying thickness of the vertical cladding creates an intriguing visual texture and a sense of depth, with the house's entryway and garage door subtly concealed within the rhythmic wood. The back of the house stands in stark contrast to its reserved front. The architects maximized transparency with large windows on the ground and first floors that can be opened wide, blurring the boundary between the interior and the outdoors. A notable feature is the bedroom on the second floor, which has a glass door that slides away to allow the bed to be rolled out onto a terrace for sleeping under the stars. This playful design element extends the living space and fosters a deep connection to nature. The use of materials, particularly the hardwood cladding, is consistent throughout the exterior. The natural stone flooring, made of basalt tiles, is used in the various rooms and continues onto the outdoor terraces, further maximizing the effect of a seamless transition between inside and outside. The interior was thoughtfully designed to maximize light and space within the constraints of the compact lot. A light shaft positioned directly above a minimalist metal staircase funnels daylight down through the different floors, making the interior feel bright and spacious. The thin construction of the staircase further enhances this effect. Custom-designed interior elements, including the kitchen, bathrooms, and lighting, were carefully crafted to complement the architecture. The deliberate alignment of furniture and thoughtful details emphasizes the architectural language and gives the house its unique character. Designed for a downsizing couple, the project transforms the formerly dark and disconnected house into a light-filled, energy-efficient home with a strong connection to its garden. The design balances respect for the original home's architectural character with the requirements of modern, accessible living. The design strategy clearly contrasts the new and old by distinguishing between the original double-story home and a low, horizontal extension. The new addition is defined by a shallow, floating roof and is linked to the existing house via a narrow hallway flanked by courtyards. These courtyards pull natural light into the original structure's rooms, which had previously been dark. The interior of the extension features a minimalist material palette of black steel, exposed timber beams, and plywood. This combination creates a sense of warmth and texture while emphasizing the contrast with the exposed structure. The timber, specifically Tasmanian Oak for the beams and Maxi Panel Baltic Birch plywood for the ceilings and walls, adds natural warmth and connects the indoor and outdoor spaces. Large windows and a halo of high-level windows separate the roof from the walls, allowing low winter sun to penetrate deep into the space and warm the polished concrete floors. The roof overhangs are strategically designed to block the summer sun, ensuring thermal comfort year-round. To accommodate the clients' request for a ground-floor bedroom as they downsize, the architects repurposed the original living room into a main bedroom, ensuite, and walk-in robe. Upstairs bedrooms were retained for visiting family and friends. • Cottage Near a Pond | Atelier 111 Architekti | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The "Cottage Near a Pond" by Czech studio Atelier 111 Architekti is a holiday home in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic, completed in 2018. The design was inspired by traditional fisherman's cabins and created a special layout to maximize space within strict local building regulations. The cottage is made up of four timber-clad masses, three connected and one separate, which together form a functional and charming holiday house. The design reinterprets the form of traditional fishing huts, with their simple, gabled roofs, to create a rustic yet modern aesthetic. To navigate the site's legal size limits—a maximum built-up area of 50 m² and a maximum height of 5 meters the architects designed a clever floor plan that maximizes usable space. The clustered cabins appear like a small settlement or cluster of sheds. This approach breaks up the mass of the building while organizing different functions. Despite its small size, the cottage offers abundant views. Large windows in the kitchen and bedroom overlook the pond, while the living space opens toward a stand of mature oak trees on the other side. The interior of the cottage is warm and functional, with a minimalist material palette. The central entry leads into the kitchen, which is fully equipped for holiday stays. Above the kitchen is a small, built-in attic designed as a sleeping area for children, using every available inch of space. In addition to the kitchen, the main cottage contains a bedroom with views of the water and a living area that faces the sunlit oak trees. The interiors are finished with wood paneling and minimalist furniture to enhance the cozy, cabin-like feel. The separate volume The detached fourth volume is a key part of the design, serving a specific purpose while enhancing the overall visual appeal. It functions as a storage shed with a covered porch, an ideal spot for quiet contemplation or for drying fishing nets, reinforcing the cabin's rustic, fishing-inspired concept. • Kjerringholmen Summerhouse | Line Solgaard Arkitekter | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Completed in 2022, the Kjerringholmen Cabin is a 62-square-meter holiday retreat situated on a small private island in the Hvaler archipelago, Norway. Designed by Line Solgaard Arkitekter, the cabin was conceived as an escape from city life, a philosophy deeply ingrained in Norwegian culture. The structure is elevated on steel pillars, which minimizes its footprint and allows it to coexist with the surrounding rocky terrain and landscape. The cabin's design consists of three interconnected volumes with mono-pitched roofs. Large windows and bay windows are strategically placed to take advantage of commanding southern views toward the Løperen fjord and the Ytre Hvaler National Parks. Clad in ash wood, the cabin blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The interior features an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area that opens onto a central terrace, connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces. The compact design is meticulously planned to maximize functionality and comfort. Due to the island's limited access, the timber structure was prefabricated off-site and transported to the location. PUBLIC | Multi-use facility | Completed in 2002, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) is a multi-use facility built for the Victorian State Government in Melbourne, Australia. The project combines the existing infrastructure of three organisations, ACCA, Chunky Move and Playbox, to create a unified major presence in the Arts, and form a precinct with the existing Malthouse theatre building located on the adjacent site. The building is designed to make reference to its primary function; it is a sculpture in which to exhibit art. Contextual issues of locality and region underpin their diverse body of work, which spans residential, commercial and urban architecture. The practice is renowned for its clarity of vision and its versatility, with art galleries, wineries and private homes as deftly executed as the extensive urban infrastructure the firm has created in and around Melbourne, where it is based. In each project, Wood Marsh’s founding principles are evident: the sculptural quality of the external forms, the play of solidity and transparency, and the materiality of the limited palettes. Each reminds us that contemporary architecture can have a permanence, and that practical design can be unique and beautiful. • Two Sisters Holiday Home | MNY Arkitekter | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Situated on a rocky, forested site in Salo, Finland, the Two Sisters Holiday Home by MNY Arkitekter was designed for two siblings and their families. This vacation residence thoughtfully balances communal living with the need for individual privacy by dividing the program into two distinct units. The structures are arranged in a "down-to-earth" fan shape that preserves the surrounding pine trees and visible rocks, with the buildings' large windows oriented to maximize views toward the sea. The design is a contemporary expression of the traditional Finnish cabin, composed of four interconnected sections of varying heights. The units are joined by a central, sheltered terrace that serves as a shared outdoor living space. A narrow, inviting entrance is nestled between the two primary volumes, offering a first glimpse of the landscape beyond. The layout was specifically crafted to ensure that each unit enjoys equally impressive views, while interior sightlines between the two are intentionally limited, creating a sense of shared presence without sacrificing privacy. The holiday home was constructed using a prefabricated 180mm log frame, which was then clad in vertical spruce with a silicon treatment to achieve a weathered silver-grey finish that blends with the natural surroundings over time. The interior spaces celebrate this honest material palette, with visible roof beams and exposed wooden surfaces treated with lye to create a bright, serene atmosphere. Striking black fireplaces and dark built-in furniture provide a contemporary contrast to the light wood. Sustainability was a key consideration in the project. The building utilizes a prefab structure to minimize waste and features glue-laminated timber beams and recycled wood fiber insulation. Natural ventilation, air-source heat pumps, and underfloor heating contribute to the home's energy efficiency. • Summerhouse T | Krupinski-Krupinska Arkitekter | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Completed in 2015, Summerhouse T is a compact, 40-square-meter retreat located in the Stockholm archipelago, Sweden. Designed by Krupinski/Krupinska Arkitekter, the small house was created for a family of two adults and two children who needed more space, as the original summer house on the site had become too small. Situated on a former gardener's plot, the design respects the site's history and integrates with existing rock formations and greenery. To accommodate the family's needs within the small footprint, the architects designed a single large square room with a freestanding central volume. This core volume efficiently incorporates a kitchen, storage, and four beds into its design. The open-plan layout and floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides create a surprisingly spacious feeling and provide a strong connection to the surrounding nature. Sliding glass walls can be opened during summer, extending the living space outdoors and allowing for a pleasant breeze to flow through the house. The color palette is deliberately dark for both the exterior and interior, enhancing the building's intimate character and directing focus toward the picturesque views. The exterior is clad in black Falu Rödfärg, a traditional Swedish color, allowing the house to recede into the forest. The single door leads to the bathroom, a separate volume adapted to fit into a gap in the nearby rock formation, which further maximizes interior space. The house was nominated for the Private House Prize in 2016 by the Swedish Association of Architects. • Tochka na Karte Country Hotel | Rhizome | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | Modular Cabin | The Tochka na Karte (meaning "A Point on the Map") Country Hotel is a modern hospitality complex located on the wild, isolated eastern shore of Lake Ladoga in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Designed by the Russian architectural firm Rhizome, the project is surrounded by a pine forest and a vast sand beach, which provided the primary inspiration for its design. The hotel's architecture is a sensitive response to this natural context, focusing on minimal intervention and a deep connection between the buildings and the landscape. Constructed using sustainable prefabricated technology, the hotel was assembled from modules at a factory and then transported to the site. This approach was chosen for its suitability and minimal environmental impact in such a remote location. The complex is comprised of 15 individual L-shaped cabins, a reception building, and other guest facilities, all designed to be "dispersed" among the pine trees. Each cabin consists of two modules that include a compact space for up to four guests and a large terrace. Inspired by the tradition of Nordic saunas, the cabins are also equipped with private saunas. The design emphasizes the interaction between the guests and the environment. All rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glazing, ensuring every guest can enjoy panoramic views of the lake and forest. The exterior is clad in wood and dark metal, a color palette that allows the buildings to subtly recede into the landscape, highlighting nature as the main focal point. Inside, the use of natural wood continues, creating a cozy and rustic atmosphere. The hotel is a successful example of harmonizing modern architecture with a pristine, natural setting, providing guests with a tranquil, contemplative retreat. • Turin Horse | Jorge Ramón Giacometti Taller de Arquitectura | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Built in 2019 in Calacalí, Ecuador, the Turin Horse is a 100-square-meter house designed by Jorge Ramón Giacometti Taller de Arquitectura. Situated on a slope inside the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve, the project's main focus was to utilize natural and recycled materials to create a dwelling that would exist in harmony with its surroundings. The house's location provides expansive views of the crater, with vistas of the Chivo and Pondoña hills visible at sunset. The construction of the house started with a lightweight, braced wooden structure built on a concrete slab and a rear retaining wall. The walls were then filled using a technique of rammed and compacted earth mixed with hay bales, a system the architects referred to as "rammed earth with lost formwork". This creates sturdy, 12-centimeter-thick, earthquake-resistant walls. Recycled red pine staves were used to clad the exterior, while the roof was crafted from a lightweight layer of recycled triplex and asphalt resin. The interior of the house features a minimalist design with a focus on functionality and maximizing the connection to the outdoors. The large glass windows, a prominent feature of the design, allow for ample natural light and ventilation, while visually connecting the interior to the external landscape. The house was recognized for its use of sustainable and local materials, reflecting an eco-conscious approach to modern architecture. • Ljungdalen (Mountain Hut) | Lowén Widman Arkitekter | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Hut | The Ljungdalen mountain hut, completed in 2014 by Lowén Widman Arkitekter, is a modern reinterpretation of traditional timber-framed houses typical of Sweden's Härjedalen region. Situated in the small village of Ljungdalen, where forest meets high mountains, the holiday home was designed for the Widman family to serve as a year-round retreat for a large family or several smaller ones over generations. The design aimed for the house to blend into the landscape with the same unassuming presence as a barn or a storeroom, establishing itself as a natural part of the cultural surroundings. Built on a hilly plot overlooking the Ljungan river and surrounded by mountains on three sides, the building's long and narrow form (4.2 by 19.2 meters) follows the terrain's contours, positioning it to shield against harsh northern and western winds. This creates a sheltered, sun-filled spot on the southwest side for outdoor relaxation. The structure features a framework of solid wood from Isotimber, a locally manufactured material that is a natural refinement of traditional timber construction. Its façade is clad in untreated, slow-growing heartwood pine, which is expected to age gracefully and develop a natural variation in color over time, much like the area's oldest structures. The Ljungdalen cabin was nominated for the Swedish Wood Award in 2016 for its thoughtful design and use of materials. Daniel Widman, the lead architect, noted the project was driven by a desire for a building that would improve with age and use better wall materials than conventional builds. The interior, finished with a mix of wood and white surfaces, continues the home's contemporary yet warm aesthetic.
