Completed in 2023 on Santa Cruz Island for a local family, the project showcases an innovative approach to sustainable construction by minimizing environmental impact in a delicate ecological region. The two-story, modular cabin was prefabricated over two months in Quito, Ecuador, before its 2,000 custom-made components of wood, metal, aluminum, and glass were shipped in containers to the island. The components, held together by over 17,000 screws and pins, were assembled on-site in just four weeks by a specialized team. This prefabrication process avoided construction site damage to the soil. Inspired by bioclimatic principles, the cabin was elevated off the ground to allow for a cooling air chamber beneath it. A double-layered wall and roof structure, along with perforated floors, promote natural cross-ventilation, ensuring a comfortable interior climate. The five main materials—wood, stone, metal, glass, and PVC—were chosen for their efficiency and minimal ecological footprint. The interior features plywood paneling, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that contrasts with the exterior. The main A-frame structure creates a double-height central space. A loft accessed by a sliding black metal ladder offers a flexible area for sleeping, working, or leisure. Large windows at each end of the cabin, along with two narrow windows on the sides, fill the space with natural light and frame views of the surrounding nature. The cabin was intentionally designed with scalability and relocation in mind, using gabions as foundations to further minimize the impact on the soil. Situated within a dense and mixed-use urban landscape, the 91-square-meter concrete house was conceived as an ""urban oasis"" that provides a tranquil, private living environment while adapting to Okinawa's humid climate and typhoon-prone conditions. To achieve privacy and buffer the inhabitants from the bustling surroundings, Studio Cochi Architects enclosed the house in a fortress-like shell of thick, exposed concrete walls, minimizing exterior-facing windows. Instead of relying on conventional windows, the architects integrated two north-south oriented courtyards and a skylight to draw in natural light and promote ventilation. The north-facing courtyard, with its gradual buffer zone, connects with a tatami room and the main entrance, while the south-facing courtyard creates a thick, solid buffer from the busy commercial district. The house's interior is defined by a raw and minimalist aesthetic, with the concrete shell left exposed, complemented by precise geometric compositions and lines. The ground floor contains public areas, such as the living room, kitchen, and tatami room, and the upper floor is reserved for more private spaces, including the bedrooms and bathrooms. The staircase leading to the upper floor is wider than typical to serve as a secondary seating area. By carefully controlling the interplay of light and solid surfaces, Studio Cochi Architects created a series of intimate, serene spaces that offer refuge from the chaotic urban environment. Situated within a dense and mixed-use urban landscape, the 91-square-meter concrete house was conceived as an ""urban oasis"" that provides a tranquil, private living environment while adapting to Okinawa's humid climate and typhoon-prone conditions. To achieve privacy and buffer the inhabitants from the bustling surroundings, Studio Cochi Architects enclosed the house in a fortress-like shell of thick, exposed concrete walls, minimizing exterior-facing windows. Instead of relying on conventional windows, the architects integrated two north-south oriented courtyards and a skylight to draw in natural light and promote ventilation. The north-facing courtyard, with its gradual buffer zone, connects with a tatami room and the main entrance, while the south-facing courtyard creates a thick, solid buffer from the busy commercial district. The house's interior is defined by a raw and minimalist aesthetic, with the concrete shell left exposed, complemented by precise geometric compositions and lines. The ground floor contains public areas, such as the living room, kitchen, and tatami room, and the upper floor is reserved for more private spaces, including the bedrooms and bathrooms. The staircase leading to the upper floor is wider than typical to serve as a secondary seating area. By carefully controlling the interplay of light and solid surfaces, Studio Cochi Architects created a series of intimate, serene spaces that offer refuge from the chaotic urban environment. Completed in 2022, the 549-square-foot cabin was conceived as a shelter that evokes the history of primitive human dwellings while blending seamlessly with its mystical, rugged environment. Inspired by naval architecture, the design features a compact, three-story volume that maximizes space through a vertical distribution of functions. The exterior is clad in yellow pine wood with an amber hue, which is contrasted by a canopy of dark clay tiles supported by large eaves. These materials were chosen to resonate with the surrounding landscape and to reflect the effects of time and weather. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural, with exposed wood complemented by woven rugs, clay lamps, and visible pipes and mechanisms. LODGES | Cabin | Constructed in 2024 by EERI Studio (Everyday Essentials Research Institute), the Spark Lodges are a set of modular, prefabricated holiday cabins located at the YDD Resort in Changsha, China. The three-story lodges, with a floor area of 76 square meters, were designed for a tourist village in Jinkeng, Hunan, and draw inspiration from the area's rich history, particularly its connection to the fireworks industry. The design harmoniously blends contemporary industrial materials with the natural, rural surroundings of rice fields and the distant Lianyun Mountains. The exterior of the cabins is composed of green-painted steel frames, pine planks, and most notably, translucent polycarbonate panels that wrap around the roof and certain wall sections. The polycarbonate material, in particular, was chosen for its cost-effectiveness and ability to create a dynamic and "sparkling" effect as light conditions change. These translucent forms give the structures a striking, ethereal quality, especially when viewed against the backdrop of the rice fields and mountains. The interior of each lodge is designed to create a continuous and changing viewing experience for its occupants. On the ground floor, large, three-sided, floor-to-ceiling windows provide a panoramic, horizontal view of the rice fields, intentionally blurring the line between inside and out. Moving up to the second-floor bedroom, the windows become smaller and more strategically placed, framing "close-up, square-shaped paintings" of the landscape and ensuring privacy. CAMPING | Cabin | Territoire Charlevoix is a unique eco-tourism project located in the Canadian wilderness of Quebec, between La Malbaie and Baie-Saint-Paul. Designed by Montreal-based architecture firm Atelier l'Abri and completed in 2022, the project consists of several minimalist cabins and communal structures spread across a rugged landscape. The core philosophy behind the design was to create a harmonious balance between nature and architecture, promoting a low-impact, intimate, and immersive experience for guests. The cabins at Territoire Charlevoix are a product of Atelier l'Abri's ongoing reflection on "our relationship with the territory and how to inhabit it". The five small, autonomous shelters offer comfortable immersion in nature, both in summer and winter. Their orientation and carefully chosen locations provide privacy and generous views of the natural surroundings. The cabins are elevated on slender legs, a design choice that minimizes their impact on the ground and avoids the need for heavy machinery for traditional foundations. This preserves the forest environment and limits deforestation. The design balances rusticity with modernity, using limited and efficient materials to create warm, functional spaces that encourage a slower pace of life. The Territoire Charlevoix project extends beyond just the sleeping cabins. The site also includes modules for communal areas, such as viewing platforms, shared kitchens, and a visitor center with a forest buvette. Commissioned by a client seeking a cozy, nature-immersed escape for themselves and their dog, the project blends functionality with an ultra-compact footprint. Affectionately dubbed "La Niche" (The Nook or Kennel) by its owners, the cabin's design features elements that evoke the image of a doghouse, such as its simple, gabled shape and arched doorway. Completed in 2024, the 60-square-meter (650-square-foot) cabin is distinguished by its understated elegance and minimalist design. RESIDENTIAL | House | An imaginative solution to the common urban challenge of limited space, The Perch by Nicole Blair is a 660-square-foot studio ingeniously built directly above an existing bungalow in Austin, Texas. The clients, who include a hairstylist and a landscape designer, sought to add flexible living space without sacrificing their beloved backyard garden. Architect Nicole Blair's design, completed in 2022, is a floating structure supported by four steel columns that pierce the bungalow's walls, minimizing site disruption. The steel frame was prefabricated off-site and craned into place in a single day, which allowed the homeowners to remain in their residence during construction. Aptly named for its elevated position, The Perch adds a layer of densification while honoring the existing home's scale and setting. The exterior is clad in durable, low-maintenance weathering steel and corrugated metal, echoing the angular, asymmetrical roofline and the original bungalow's steel elements. This material choice offers a bold, utilitarian aesthetic that will naturally evolve over time. The clients, who include a hairstylist and a landscape designer, sought to add flexible living space without sacrificing their beloved backyard garden. Architect Nicole Blair's design, completed in 2022, is a floating structure supported by four steel columns that pierce the bungalow's walls, minimizing site disruption. The steel frame was prefabricated off-site and craned into place in a single day, which allowed the homeowners to remain in their residence during construction. Aptly named for its elevated position, The Perch adds a layer of densification while honoring the existing home's scale and setting. The exterior is clad in durable, low-maintenance weathering steel and corrugated metal, echoing the angular, asymmetrical roofline and the original bungalow's steel elements. This material choice offers a bold, utilitarian aesthetic that will naturally evolve over time. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Black Timber House, designed by HAPA Architects, is a contemporary eco-home located on the edge of the village of Rodmell, within the South Downs National Park in East Sussex, England. Completed in 2022, the award-winning residence is situated in a bucolic context, replacing a mid-century bungalow that had a less harmonious relationship with the landscape. The design is a sensitive and modern response to its setting, nestled among ash trees and fields, with its dark timber exterior allowing it to recede softly into the scenery. The house was conceived with a strong focus on sustainability, with the goal of creating a home that respects its surroundings and has minimal energy consumption. HAPA Architects employed a range of passive and active strategies to achieve this. Key features include an A-rated Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), high levels of insulation and air tightness, and a passive solar design. The house also generates its own power via photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof and uses a high-efficiency air source heat pump for low-temperature underfloor heating. A mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system ensures a constant supply of fresh air, contributing to a stable and calm internal atmosphere regardless of external weather conditions. The architectural design features two distinct stacked forms, which create interesting overhangs and roof spaces. Completed in 2022, the award-winning residence is situated in a bucolic context, replacing a mid-century bungalow that had a less harmonious relationship with the landscape. The design is a sensitive and modern response to its setting, nestled among ash trees and fields, with its dark timber exterior allowing it to recede softly into the scenery. The house was conceived with a strong focus on sustainability, with the goal of creating a home that respects its surroundings and has minimal energy consumption. HAPA Architects employed a range of passive and active strategies to achieve this. Key features include an A-rated Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), high levels of insulation and air tightness, and a passive solar design. The house also generates its own power via photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof and uses a high-efficiency air source heat pump for low-temperature underfloor heating. A mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system ensures a constant supply of fresh air, contributing to a stable and calm internal atmosphere regardless of external weather conditions. The architectural design features two distinct stacked forms, which create interesting overhangs and roof spaces. The lower level is built on a concrete plinth, while the upper, private bedroom spaces are housed within a simple gabled form that reaches up into the canopies of the trees. The transition from horizontal timber cladding on the lower level to vertical timber on the upper level accentuates this distinction. A covered entrance and a raised, open veranda connect the house to the rear garden and fields. Inside, the vaulted ceilings of the bedrooms create impressive double-height spaces, and a wrap-over window adds dramatic natural light. The interior continues the minimalist and elegant aesthetic with natural materials. The kitchen features bespoke cabinetry crafted from cross-sawn, smoked, and white-oiled engineered oak planks, a material that also serves as the timber flooring. This provides a rustic yet refined texture that complements the home's contemporary feel. A natural patinaed zinc worktop works beautifully with the other natural finishes.
