RESIDENTIAL | House | 'Pleats' is a new 1850 SF, 3 sided courtyard house in the foothills of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The foundation of the original house was reused and the space was redesigned to fit the bedrooms, including a primary suite that was lacking before. A new, gabled volume was added to take in mountain views and provide an indoor-outdoor great room with a perforated metal patio cover to ease the transition from the strong, sunlit exterior to the interior. A garage and workshop is tucked behind the house, completing the 3-sided courtyard. Aesthetically, the exterior of the house adopt elements of the Saguaro Cactus. The house draws its name, 'Pleats,' from the corrugated metal that wraps the gabled volume, reminiscent of the pleated exterior of the cactus. The gabled entry features a patterned, wood rainscreen that evokes the forked ribs of the cactus while the recessed entry is akin to a Saguaro boot, the holes in the giant cacti that many desert animals use as their homes. - ING-SUK House | Yangnar Studio | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2022, the ING-SUK House is a 50-square-meter wooden platform home designed and built by Yangnar Studio. Situated within a pristine forest of the Obkhan National Park in Nam Phrae, Chiang Mai, Thailand, the project was conceived as an experimental and harmonious response to budget limitations and the natural environment. Its design is reminiscent of the traditional Kha-Nham, a temporary shelter used by gardeners in southern Thailand. The house sits elevated on compacted soil, with a corrugated sheet metal roof and an open-plan interior space surrounded by a perimeter deck. The layout is composed of two main sections connected by an elongated terrace, with staircases on either side facilitating movement. A raised den provides additional versatile living space. The architects placed a strong emphasis on using local materials and preserving their natural characteristics. The structure was built with untreated wood sourced from the immediate surroundings and from recycled materials, including old wooden doors, windows, and steel profiles. Notably, old wooden pillars salvaged from traditional Vietnamese houses were repurposed for the front stairs. The use of raw, natural materials ensures that the home blends seamlessly into its rich natural context. - Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno | Foster + Partners | ZHIG
COMMERCIAL | Office building | Ciudad Casa de Gobierno is a new city hall for Buenos Aires, housing offices for the Mayor and 1,500 employees. Spanning an entire city block in Parque Patricios, the new building contributes to the revitalisation of the neighbourhood and combines an environmentally efficient design with an innovative, highly flexible internal arrangement of terraced office floors. The architecture echoes the building’s park-side setting, with landscaped courtyards and shaded walkways, and uses materials that draw on the site’s industrial past to reinforce the unique character of the area. Entrance is via a soaring four-storey-high atrium. Full-height glazing fills the space with natural light and creates a visual connection with the adjacent park, and four tiers of office levels step back to create a sequence of stepped internal terraces. The office floors are connected by top-lit circulation routes and punctuated by two large landscaped patios. The workspaces are open, the majority are naturally lit and visible, helping to improve communication between departments and promote a sense of community. The generous floor plates are based on an eight-metre grid, which allows for a wide variety of layouts – the building was originally commissioned as the headquarters for Banco Ciudad, and the inherent flexibility of its design has enabled a seamless conversion into government offices. Further facilities include a café and a 300-seat wood-panelled auditorium, which can be used for local events. Designed to make a positive environmental and social impact on the city, the plans form part of a wider regeneration initiative in the barrio of Parque Patricios. Externally, the building is characterised by its flowing roof canopy, which is supported by pillars and extends in a deep overhang to shade the entrance plaza and facades. Inside, the concrete barrel vaulted roof is textured and exposed. The thermal mass of the concrete soffits, combined with chilled beams, helps to naturally regulate the temperature and keep the offices cool. Every aspect of the scheme was designed in response to the local climate, including the composition of each facade – the eastern and western elevations are shaded by a screen of louvres, which rise the full height of the building. In 2017, the building was certified LEED Gold. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_650211df82d841388141ff05e0fee579~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2000,h_1124,al_c,q_90/Buenos%20Aires%20Ciudad%20Casa%20de%20Gobierno%20(1).jfif Please Wait Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno (6).jfif Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno (9).jfif Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno (7).jfif 1/3 0 Product 5.2K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno Uspallata 315O, C1437 JCK, Buenos Aires, Argentina Architects: Foster + Partners Foster + Partners Architecture Office United Kingdom Area: Year: City: Client: 45,000 m2 2015 Buenos Aires CRIBA S..A. - House on the Pond (Maison sur l'Étang) | Atelier Échelle | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | The House on the Pond, or Maison sur l'Étang in French, is a secondary dwelling designed by Montreal-based Atelier Échelle. Located in the rural municipality of Austin in Québec, Canada, the project was completed in 2023. Created to complement the client's ancestral home on the same property, the house was envisioned as a compact yet versatile "jewel box" with a strong connection to its natural surroundings. The design of the 120-square-meter house is a modern reinterpretation of traditional Québec agrarian architecture. Atelier Échelle successfully navigated tight local building regulations, which capped the floor area, by maximizing covered terraces and creating a flexible interior layout. The house is elevated on an insulated concrete block foundation, with a lower level carved into the ground, and a mezzanine level built into the gabled roof. This design allows the building to adapt to the seasons, with expanded outdoor spaces in favorable weather and a cozy, protected interior during winter. The interior spaces are characterized by warmth, timelessness, and a connection to nature. A double-height living room on the main level is anchored by a wood-burning fireplace and large windows that provide expansive views of the adjacent pond and distant mountains. The kitchen features custom rift-cut white oak millwork and a gold-streaked white quartzite counter. The primary bedroom is located on the mezzanine level, while a children's bunk room is tucked into the subterranean level. The basement also includes a TV lounge and a bathroom. The choice of materials emphasizes durability, sustainability, and a respectful connection to the local environment. The exterior cladding and decks are made of Kebony, a sustainable, modified wood product. The interiors feature rift-cut white oak millwork and unlacquered brass hardware, which will develop a rich patina over time. A soft, putty-colored sandstone is used for the sunken fire pit, complementing the gold-streaked quartzite in the kitchen. RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Completed in 2019, Monte House is a 42-square-meter compact vacation home designed by TACO taller de arquitectura contextual for a young couple. Located on a 10,000-square-meter plot in the wild landscape of southeastern Mexico, the house is a secluded retreat that encourages contemplation and a close connection to its natural surroundings. The structure is a simple and compact two-story volume set on a platform elevated off the ground. This elevation helps protect against undesirable animals and facilitates construction on the site's rocky terrain, which prevented excavation. The home is strategically oriented to work with the region's dominant winds and sun exposure, ensuring a comfortable interior temperature. The exterior and interior are finished with a rough stucco and an artisanal lime-based paint with mineral pigments, giving the building a natural, reddish tone that blends with the surrounding soil. Regional cedar wood is used for the folding doors and operable louvers, allowing residents to control the amount of privacy and connection to the outdoors. A pre-existing tree provides shade for the swimming pool and terrace, an extension of the interior social area. The compact interior includes a double-height living room with a kitchenette, a sleeping mezzanine, and a bathroom with an outdoor shower. The interior design features a collection of locally crafted design pieces in natural tones that enhance the space's warmth and connection to the region. The project involved converting a 1950s garage and washroom, originally built in a walnut orchard, into a highly space-efficient residence. The design is a study in creative reuse and practical resourcefulness, featuring reclaimed and recycled materials that add character and a unique history to the small house. The house is distinguished by its angular geometry and facade of rusty metal, which reflects the industrial feel of its repurposed materials. Elements throughout the home have a past life, such as the rain screen made from vineyard stakes sourced from a friend's property and rollers for a kitchen storage space repurposed from skateboard wheels found at an estate sale. Inside, the design maximizes every inch of the small space, with an emphasis on functionality and light. The foundation was recycled from old planter boxes, and the building incorporates unexpected materials throughout. The extensive remodel includes a home office, a compact kitchen, a bathroom, and a sleeping loft, creating a comfortable and practical home within the limited footprint of the original garage.
