  • The Wiggins house | urbanfunction | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The Wiggins house in Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealand, is a family home designed by Urbanfunction Architecture and completed in 2022. Facing challenges such as a narrow site in a flood zone and proximity to neighbors, the design incorporates a gable form and central axis as a nod to the site's original cottage. The layout includes staggered garage and living wings that create courtyards to enhance natural light indoors. The exterior combines Abodo Sioo:x timber cladding and reclaimed bricks at the entrance. Inside, a glass door provides a view through a hallway with lime plaster, leading to a bright, open-plan living area featuring a double-height ceiling and mezzanine. The interior design uses natural materials like reclaimed brick and timber, along with textured plaster and curves, to soften the space. Upstairs, windows offer views of the Port Hills, and there's a hidden room. • Kynttilä | ORTRAUM Architects | ZHIG

RETREAT & WELLNESS | Cabin | Named after the Finnish word for "candle," the Kynttilä cabin by ORTRAUM Architects is a tiny, sustainable meditation retreat located on a narrow, forested peninsula in eastern Finland. Sited on Lake Saimaa, near Savonlinna, the 15-square-meter cabin was designed with a Zen philosophy of "nothingness," stripping the design to its bare minimum to create a space for spiritual and visual focus. At night, the illuminated cabin shines on the lake like a warm candle, a key part of its design concept. The cabin was designed to minimize its impact on the protected nature reserve, and the process of building it reflects this commitment. To avoid damaging the forest vegetation, a temporary road was built for a single day to assemble the prefabricated structure. The vegetation was then restored to its original state once the construction was finished. The structure is primarily composed of cross-laminated timber (CLT), which is exposed on the interior to create a warm, minimalist, and natural aesthetic. The exterior is clad in larch boards, allowing the cabin to blend harmoniously with its surroundings. The gabled ends of the cabin feature full-height glazing, maximizing the connection to nature and providing panoramic views of the water on both sides of the peninsula. The interior includes built-in furniture and a sleeping bunk accessed by a ladder, demonstrating an efficient use of the compact space. • Cottage Pod Bukovou | Mjölk architekti | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cottage | Set against the rugged landscape of the Jizera Mountains in the Czech Republic, the Cottage Pod Bukovou by Mjölk architekti is a revitalization of an unfinished 1980s cabin. The project transformed the eccentric, derelict structure into an elegant and bold mountain retreat, consisting of a main cottage and a smaller annexed cabin that houses a sauna and a guest bedroom. The design draws on the atmosphere of the forest environment, where foggy, dreary weather can be "the best" for creating a cozy, contemporary interior. The most striking feature of the renovation is the exterior, where the original gray facade was completely replaced with vertical blackened timber paneling. The dark wood covers both the walls and the A-frame pitched roofs, giving both the main cottage and the sauna cabin a sculptural, abstract appearance where the roof, walls, and chimney merge into a single, unified shape. In contrast to the angular silhouette, some of the windows are cut into round shapes, evoking the feel of an oversized birdhouse. Inside the 85.5-square-meter main cottage, the layout was reorganized for greater efficiency while maintaining the original living space. The interior is simple and functional, with a cozy atmosphere created by the crackling fire in a large fireplace. The sleeping arrangements were changed to accommodate two bedrooms. A larger bedroom is accessed via a concealed staircase within a closet, while a second, smaller one is reached by a ladder from the kitchen. The architects also created a unique "sleeping window," a deep, cushioned alcove opposite the fireplace where an unexpected guest can sleep comfortably. The interior warmth is complemented by the materials, with the black wood finish extending to the ceilings of the main room. The project includes a 21-square-meter annexed cabin with a sauna and a guest bedroom, providing a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the forest views. • Punta Casitas Cabin 1 | Yemail Arquitectura | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Designed by Yemail Arquitectura, Punta Casitas Cabin 1 is a remote mountain retreat situated at 3015 meters above sea level within the rocky ridges of Lake Tota in Colombia. Completed in 2022, the 549-square-foot cabin was conceived as a shelter that evokes the history of primitive human dwellings while blending seamlessly with its mystical, rugged environment. Inspired by naval architecture, the design features a compact, three-story volume that maximizes space through a vertical distribution of functions. The exterior is clad in yellow pine wood with an amber hue, which is contrasted by a canopy of dark clay tiles supported by large eaves. These materials were chosen to resonate with the surrounding landscape and to reflect the effects of time and weather. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural, with exposed wood complemented by woven rugs, clay lamps, and visible pipes and mechanisms. The layout unfolds over three levels, featuring an open-plan kitchen and dining area on the main level and a tatami mat, a suspended desk, and the main bedroom with panoramic views of Lake Tota on the upper levels. A suspended terrace further blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Much of the cabin's artisanal quality comes from local artisans from communities near Lake La Coca, who created custom fixtures like the clay lamps. • Fremont House | Marc Thorpe Design + Architecture | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The Fremont House is a 1,000-square-foot, 100% solar-powered, off-grid home located in the remote Western Catskill Mountains near Roscoe, New York. Designed by Marc Thorpe Design + Architecture and completed around 2023, the cabin was built as an affordable, sustainable, and contemporary home with integrated technology. The project is based on a philosophy of self-reliance, with the house designed to exist in harmony with nature and emphasize quality over quantity. The house features a compact footprint but incorporates a traditional residential layout, with a division between public and private spaces. The ground floor contains the kitchen, dining, and living areas, while two bedrooms and a bathroom are located on the upper level. The exterior is clad in Douglas fir stained in a charcoal grey color, which aids in heat retention during the region's cool year-round climate. The house was constructed using locally sourced lumber. A rooftop array of 16 solar panels provides all the home's electricity, contributing to its self-sustaining, independent nature. Large windows and a terrace on the upper level help connect the interior with the surrounding forest. Inside, the home has a minimalist aesthetic, with oak flooring, sheetrock walls, and quartz countertops. The furnishings and decor, chosen by Marc Thorpe and his wife, Claire Pijoulat, are simple yet stylish, avoiding distraction from the natural views. The Fremont House stands as a symbol of sustainable architecture and a testament to respectful, ecologically conscious design. • Lapinha Studio | plano livre | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | We were challenged to design a structure for CASACOR Minas Gerais that could be dismantled and later reassembled in Lapinha da Serra, where it would be used for accommodation. The constructive reasoning guided the project: we attached two container modules laterally and took advantage of the characteristics of this system, exposing the industrialized construction components without camouflage. In the Lapinha Studio, we concentrated all the hydraulic systems on one wall, creating the infrastructural module. This design strategy reduced costs and freed up the rest of the space. Therefore, the other container serves as a flexible, indeterminate module—a free plane—that, in this edition, houses the furniture of the Lapinha Studio. More than just a physical space, we present an idea—a prototype to be expanded, replicated, and implemented in other contexts. Different arrangements of containers create different spaces for various lives to unfold there. Inside, we aimed to highlight the meeting point between the containers to emphasize the construction system itself. The materials differentiate the infrastructural module from the flexible one. The colors bring the natural landscape of the next location of deployment, Lapinha da Serra, inside this refuge. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_e970cd65be614ee494588a7067b7e46b~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1499,h_1000,al_c,q_85/Lapinha%20Studio-plano%20livre%20planolivre-Henrique%20Queiroga%20(1).jpg Please Wait Lapinha Studio-plano livre planolivre-Henrique Queiroga (6).jpg Lapinha Studio-plano livre planolivre-Henrique Queiroga (2).jpg Lapinha Studio-plano livre planolivre-Henrique Queiroga (3).jpg 1/5 0 Product 2.5K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in Lapinha Studio Belo Horizonte, Brazil Architects: plano livre plano livre Architecture Office Brazil Area: Year: City: Client: 30 m² 2021 Belo Horizonte Construction: Category: RESIDENTIAL Project Type: House Post Type: Building Country: Brazil Photographers: Henrique Queiroga the Architects Description: We were challenged to design a structure for CASACOR Minas Gerais that could be dismantled and later reassembled in Lapinha da Serra, where it would be used for accommodation. • Hills Beach | Woodhull | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | Located in Biddeford, Maine, the Hills Beach home was a renovation project by architects and builders Woodhull, completed for founder Caleb Johnson's own family. Rather than demolishing the original "beach shack," the team embarked on a thoughtful transformation that respected the structure's origins and the coastal neighborhood. The project revitalized the home with locally sourced materials and handcrafted elements, creating a unique and character-filled home. The small, 850-square-foot footprint required maximizing every detail and space. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the home features a material palette of natural wood, stone, concrete, and glass. Unpainted plaster was left to highlight the patina of reused materials. Inside, the kitchen became a centerpiece of craftsmanship, built by a master woodworker using joinery-based techniques without plywood or hardware. The house also includes subtle nods to local history, such as a hand-carved mermaid backsplash. Angled windows were strategically placed to frame views of the water, and the compact, energy-efficient design ensures all-day comfort. • Straw Flea House | Juri Troy Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Designed by Juri Troy Architects in 2022, the Straw Flea is a compact, 46-square-meter residential building located in the historic village of Murstetten, Austria. Situated within a castle park, the weekend house was built with a holistic and sustainable approach, utilizing local, natural materials and techniques to create a building with a minimal environmental footprint. The house's design balances modern sensibilities with respect for the site's rich history, sitting freely among the historical ruins and framing views of the landscape. The angular timber frame structure was constructed with wood from the client's own nearby forest, and the insulation is made from straw sourced from a local regional farm. The building is elevated off the ground by 15 screw foundations, a technique that minimizes ground disturbance. To align with the sustainable concept, the house generates its own heat and energy through a photovoltaic (PV) system installed on the roof. The interior of the single-bedroom home is entirely clad in pale wood, creating a warm, natural aesthetic. The living area, located in the southern and lower portion of the house, features large, fully openable glazing that connects the room to the garden and a small stream. The northern entrance leads to a small sanitary unit and a sleeping gallery. One of the most striking features is the floor-to-ceiling shelving that runs along the long sides of the interior, both exposing the timber structure and providing storage and seating. The Straw Flea project was completed in collaboration with Caravan Atelier. The house was recognized with several awards, including the Niederösterreichischer Holzbaupreis (Lower Austria Timber Construction Prize), the BIGSEE Wood Design Award, and the Design Educates Awards. • Alpine Shelter Skuta | OFIS Architects, Harvard GSD Students | ZHIG

SHELTERS | Prefabricated | Designed to replace a 50-year-old, dilapidated shelter, the Alpine Shelter Skuta is a free refuge for up to eight mountaineers on Mount Skuta in Slovenia's Kamnik Alps. The project is a collaboration between OFIS Architects, structural engineers AKT II, and students from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD), whose initial design studio work evolved into a fully realized architectural project. Conception and design. The project began in 2014 as a GSD design studio led by OFIS Architects' Rok Oman and Špela Videčnik, challenging students to design a modular shelter for extreme alpine conditions. The winning proposal, by students Frederick Kim, Katie MacDonald, and Erin Pellegrino, was inspired by traditional Slovenian vernacular architecture and features a robust, multi-faceted form. The final design, refined with input from mountaineers and engineers, consists of three prefabricated, 12-square-meter modules that are designed to resist heavy snowfall, strong winds, and extreme temperatures. Due to the difficult-to-access location at 2,080 meters above sea level, the modules were fabricated off-site and airlifted to the site by a Slovenian Army helicopter. More than 60 volunteers, along with the architects and engineers, completed the assembly in a single day, minimizing environmental disturbance. The modular construction and anchored base allowed for a quick, low-impact installation on the rugged, rocky terrain. The exterior is clad in a weather-resistant, silver-gray composite skin of glass fiber-reinforced concrete panels. This durable outer shell provides protection from the elements, while the interior is lined with natural larch timber panels to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Floor-to-ceiling, triple-glazed windows on the end walls offer stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valley and mountains. The interior layout is functionally divided into three zones, with a ladder connecting the entrance and storage area, the central living and dining area, and the upper bunk sleeping quarters. • Aculco House | PPAA Pérez Palacios Arquitectos Asociados | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The Aculco House is a minimalist, 90-square-meter retreat located in a secluded, rural area of Aculco, Mexico, designed by PPAA Pérez Palacios Arquitectos Asociados. Completed in 2017, the project was commissioned by two brothers who discovered the property during a rock-climbing trip and sought a remote escape to reconnect with nature. The cabin is set amidst a natural landscape featuring impressive cliffs. The design emphasizes simplicity, a deep connection to the environment, and a low-impact approach. Prior to construction, the brothers spent several years reforesting the plot. To minimize transportation and environmental disruption, the masonry for the exterior walls was sourced from a nearby quarry. Local and naturally finished materials, including clay floors, wood, and glass, were chosen to complement the surroundings and create an unpretentious aesthetic. The house's layout is centered on maximizing the landscape views through large windows and sliding doors. The interior, which functions as a "container of views," includes a living and kitchen area, a bathroom, and two bedrooms, all within an open floor plan that promotes natural light and cross-ventilation. A large external terrace, nearly double the size of the house, extends the living space outdoors. The slanted roof, mimicking the surrounding hills, was a practical solution for the area's climate, designed to be maintenance-free. • c-Home Hudson | LOT-Ek | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Container Home | The c-Home Hudson, a project by LOT-EK completed in 2019, is a single-family modular home constructed from six upcycled 40-foot shipping containers. Located in Claverack, New York, just outside the city of Hudson, the house is a prototype for LOT-EK's c-Home series, which aims to produce sustainable, design-forward homes from reclaimed materials. The 1,920-square-foot residence features a straightforward design, with the containers arranged in a 3-by-2 stack to form a two-story volume. The design is notable for its use of the shipping containers' original material and industrial aesthetic. Large, triangular-shaped cuts were made into the corrugated steel shells and replaced with expansive glass walls, creating a striking visual contrast and allowing for abundant natural light and ventilation. These geometric cuts not only define the facade but also extend to form the front and rear decks, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The first floor includes an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. Upstairs, the two bedrooms function as private suites, each with its own staircase, a full bathroom, and a walk-in closet. An external staircase leads to a green roof and deck, adding further outdoor space. The house also retains much of the containers' original character, with exposed steel and the wooden flooring on the interior. The pre-fabricated construction method allowed the house to be assembled on-site quickly, with the modules built off-site and then delivered and stacked into place. • Zayed National Museum | Foster + Partners | ZHIG

CULTURAL | Museum | Conceived as a monument and memorial to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE, the Zayed National Museum will be the centrepiece of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District and will showcase the history, culture and, more recently, the social and economic transformation of the Emirates. Architecturally, the aim has been to combine a highly efficient, contemporary form with elements of traditional Arabic design and hospitality to create a museum that is sustainable, welcoming and culturally of its place. Celebrating Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and love of nature, the museum is set within a landscaped garden, based on a timeline of his life. The galleries are housed within a mound, whose form is an abstraction of the topography of the Emirates. Above this rise five lightweight steel structures, sculpted aerodynamically to act as solar thermal towers. The heat at the top of the towers works to draw the air up vertically through the galleries due to the thermal stack effect. Air vents open at the top of the wing-shaped towers taking advantage of the negative pressure on the lee of the wing profile to draw the hot air out. Fresh air is also captured at low level and drawn through buried ground-cooling pipes and then released into the museum’s lobby. Balancing the lightweight steel structures with a more monumental interior experience, pod-shaped galleries are suspended over a dramatic top-lit central lobby, which is dug into the earth to exploit its thermal properties and brings together shops, cafes and informal venues for performances of poetry and dance. Throughout, the treatment of light and shade draws on a tradition of discreet, carefully positioned openings, which capture and direct the region’s intense sunlight to illuminate and animate these sculptural interior spaces. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_70e5a7fe87c84a1c9e20538b5da91413~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2000,h_1333,al_c,q_90/Zayed%20National%20Museum%20(2).jfif Please Wait Zayed National Museum (1).jfif Zayed National Museum (2).jfif 1/1 0 Product 2.2K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in Zayed National Museum 331 Jacques Chirac St - Al Saadiyat Island - Cultural District - Abu Dhabi - United Arab Emirates Architects: Foster + Partners Foster + Partners Architecture Office United Kingdom Area: Year: City: Client: 44,000 m2 2024 Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism Construction: Category: CULTURAL Project Type: Museum Post Type: Building Country: United Arab Emirates Photographers: the architects Description: Conceived as a monument and memorial to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE, the Zayed National Museum will be the centrepiece of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District and will showcase the history, culture and, more recently, the social and economic transformation of the Emirates.
