RESIDENTIAL | House | Coolamon House sits on an escarpment position on the edge of the Tweed Caldera providing breathtaking views. The house is planned around an oasis courtyard to create a protected garden at its core, with a transparent outer shell to allow visual immersion in the vast surrounding landscape. Further views are captured across its landscaped green heart, with private spaces concealed behind hardwood cladding. Principally a one-bedroom home, the pool, laundry, powder room and ancillary guest accommodation are accessed via a covered path around the courtyard perimeter, with the garage and office located off the driveway. Users leave the outside world behind as they approach the house on foot, taking in the finely tapering slab cantilevering out into the panoramic expanse beyond. Extending out from the steep site the building appears to float, with developing patinas settling over the raw palette of concrete, blackbutt and folded brass. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a02f20_f5d1a10cff674dca92f91d051dfe3fdf~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1334,h_1000,al_c,q_85/COOLAMON%20HOUSE-DFJ%20Architects-Photography-Christopher%20Frederick%20Jones%20(1).jpg Please Wait COOLAMON HOUSE-DFJ Architects-Photography-Christopher Frederick Jones (1).jpg COOLAMON HOUSE-DFJ Architects-Photography-Christopher Frederick Jones (3).jpg COOLAMON HOUSE-DFJ Architects-Photography-Christopher Frederick Jones (4).jpg 1/6 0 Product 5.3K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in COOLAMON HOUSE Byron Bay NSW 2481, Australia Architects: DFJ Architects DFJ Architects Architecture Office Australia Area: Year: City: Client: 380 m² 2020 Coorabell - Construction: Category: RESIDENTIAL Project Type: House Post Type: Building Country: Australia Photographers: Christopher Frederick Jones the Architects Description: Coolamon House sits on an escarpment position on the edge of the Tweed Caldera providing breathtaking views. Completed in 2021 by Quito-based architectural firm Rama Estudio, the cabin is a small, 33-square-meter wooden structure designed to blend into its surroundings while prioritizing sustainability and a connection with nature. Constructed with wood and a traditional Latin American technique called bahareque, which uses earth, straw, and wood, the cabin was designed with the intention of reclaiming local construction practices. This approach not only strengthens its connection to the land but also optimizes resources through material experimentation. The building is clad in small wooden panels, which give the structure a simple and timeless aesthetic. A central outdoor space and an elevated platform for the cabin allow it to connect seamlessly with the landscape and offer peaceful views of the lush green fields. The cabin was designed as a ""hospitality"" project, with a focus on creating a sustainable and adaptable retreat. This focus is part of Rama Estudio's broader architectural philosophy, which centers on sensitive approaches to natural context and resource optimization. The firm, co-founded by Felipe Donoso, Carolina Rodas, and Carlos Chávez, often integrates sustainable building materials like rammed earth, bamboo, and wood into its projects, reflecting a deep respect for the land and traditional building methods. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Located in Grydalen, in Norway's Sirdal municipality, Hytte Grydalen is a 75-square-meter off-grid cabin designed by Trodahl Arkitekter. The elongated cabin, completed in 2018, is situated in a protected area without electricity or drainage, and its angular, ship-like form stands in stark contrast to the rounded landscape of the surrounding mountains. The cabin's design prioritizes a connection to nature and a focus on an unplugged, off-the-grid lifestyle. Its off-grid power is supplied by solar panels, providing lighting for the interior. The house is elongated, with a steep-pitched roofline that allows for a full ceiling height and a spacious, open feel within the main living area. The interior is dominated by wood, creating a warm, cozy atmosphere, and features a sleeping loft with an uninterrupted view of the surrounding landscape. Large windows, including glass walls in the living area, bring in natural light and blur the line between indoors and outdoors. The cabin also features an open fireplace for added warmth and ambiance. This bed comprises five key elements, with these elements combined, the design aims to offer a restful and rejuvenating sleeping experience. The bed features a high headboard that serves as a focal point, exuding a sense of grandeur and elegance. The headboard stands tall, providing ample support for lazy mornings spent reading or lounging in bed. Its clean lines and smooth, minimalist design evoke a sense of simplicity and sophistication. The headboard is equipped with electric sockets and USB charging ports. This means users can conveniently charge their devices without having to search for outlets around their bed. Additionally, the headboard's finish has a duvet-like texture, providing a soft and comfortable feel. Complementing the high headboard is a low and thin foundation, measuring just 16 cm in height. This foundation not only adds to the overall sleekness of the bed but also offers a subtle touch of minimalism. Its low profile contributes to creating an illusion of space, making it especially ideal for smaller bedrooms. The mattress (196 x 190 x 33 cm) included in this bed design is specifically designed to be used without a box spring. This type of mattress combines both comfort and support, ensuring a restful night's sleep without the need for additional layers. Emphasizing the Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic, the mattress boasts a sleek design, effortlessly blending into the overall bed structure. The bed is accompanied by a set of four pillows. Lastly, a Duvet cover completes the ensemble, a final touch of simplicity and tranquillity to the bed design. The cover, following the Scandinavian design principles, features clean lines, neutral shades, and subtle texture. Its minimalistic charm gently envelops the mattress, creating an aura of peace and serenity within the bedroom. With two distinct textures on each side, soft white and grey. This exceptional bedding accessory is designed to provide ultimate elegance and style. It boasts a plush and velvety softness. - HOUSE SCHMIEDER FRAXERN | Fischer Schmieder Architekten | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | House Schmieder, a compact 8x8 meter cubic concrete residence in Fraxern, Austria, represents a distinctive response by Fischer Schmieder Architekten to its alpine setting. The house is situated on a gently sloping meadow, surrounded by cherry trees, and is accessed via a small steel bridge. The design process was centered on creating an appropriate and contemporary architectural statement that respects its rural, traditional surroundings. The raw, monolithic design features thick, 50cm-wide insulating concrete walls, with all surfaces left untreated. This choice, combined with the use of raw steel and silver fir, creates a robust and elemental interior and exterior. The living spaces are distributed vertically across three floors, linked by an open staircase, which contributes to the building's open and spacious feel despite its compact footprint. Heating is integrated directly into the concrete core, supplemented by a central furnace for additional warmth. The project balances a minimalist, brutalist aesthetic with the surrounding landscape, providing a striking yet functional refuge. - Bunkie On The Hill | Dubbeldam Architecture + Design | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Designed by Toronto-based Dubbeldam Architecture + Design, the Bunkie On The Hill is a small, contemporary retreat completed in 2022. Located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada, it is the smallest of several cabins on a family-owned property. It is tucked into the treeline on a steep slope, providing a quiet escape from the main, multi-generational family cottages below. The cabin reinterprets the traditional A-frame design with two intersecting, offset gables that create distinct volumes and elevations. This split-roof design, inspired by the layered shale rock formations found in the area, allows for carefully placed window openings that offer curated views of the forest and the lake. The design emphasizes both a strong connection to nature and a commitment to sustainability. The exterior features greyed wood siding and natural cedar soffits, which are intended to patina over time and blend further into the rustic landscape. The foundation consists of board-formed concrete that sits lightly on the existing rock contours, avoiding any need for invasive blasting. Inside, the home is functional despite its compact size, with built-in storage and benches. A variety of FSC-rated wood species line the interior, including oak flooring, maple plywood partitions, and Western red cedar slats for the ceiling, which echo the surrounding forest. The interior perimeter walls are clad in white wallboard. The home's layout features a main living area with a fireplace and a kitchen on the lower level, a bedroom with a large window and forest views at the rear, and an upper loft with a built-in desk and extra sleeping space. The large, geometric windows frame views, flood the interior with natural light, and create dramatic angular shadows that change throughout the day. In the evening, the warmly lit cedar interior transforms the cabin into a glowing lantern among the trees. Sustainable features include thickened walls with an R-value over 40, triple-glazed windows for passive insulation, and low-flow, low-energy fixtures. - House MM | a2o2 arhitekti | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | House MM is a renovation project completed in 2020 by the Slovenian firm a2o2 arhitekti in Domžale, Slovenia. The project involved renovating a derelict early 20th-century house to retain its historic character while adapting it for modern living. The architects and owners aimed to present a financially viable and sustainable alternative to new construction, preserving a piece of the neighborhood's "anonymous built heritage". Design and architectural features Balancing old and new: The exterior of the original brick house, including the facades and window openings, was preserved. A new metal roof was installed to replace the original one, which was beyond repair. New, modern interventions were deliberately designed to be distinct from the old structure, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Open and layered interior: The interior was cleared of redundant layers to expose the original structure. A new wooden-clad service core was inserted inside, keeping it separate from the old walls. Vertical spatial sequence: The home is arranged vertically, featuring a kitchen and dining area at ground level. A double-height living space with a fireplace and a large window opens onto the garden, while a new mezzanine bedroom is situated above the kitchen. Materiality: The new additions are clad in timber, contrasting with the old masonry. The ground floor is finished with terrazzo, achieved by polishing the concrete flooring. The owners were actively involved in the renovation. With the help of a restoration specialist, they restored the original windows and helped with the interior paneling and terrazzo flooring. - Kuku-Ranna Summer House | Arhitektuuribüroo Eek & Mutso | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | The Kuku-Ranna Summer House, designed by Arhitektuuribüroo Eek & Mutso, is an award-winning residential project in the village of Vääna-Jõesuu, Estonia. Located approximately 35 km from Tallinn and 150 meters from the sea, the house features a minimalist A-frame structure with kinetic elements that open it to its natural surroundings during the summer months. Completed in 2020, the project was commissioned as a seasonal retreat, which influenced its unique "closed" and "open" personalities. The house is designed to blend seamlessly into the forest landscape, resembling a tepee or a traditional farmhouse, but with a modern twist. When not in use, it is a discreet, unnoticeable structure with its striking black exterior made of yakisugi—burnt wood—cladding. When the residents arrive, the house transforms dramatically: Kinetic shutters: Large shutters on the main facade rise like wings to reveal a large glass wall, while a rear shutter opens to a small workshop. The dark, protective exterior contrasts with the light, minimalist interior, which is visible once the house is open. The A-frame structure cleverly maximizes its 80 square meters of net area. The interior features a ground-floor living space that extends onto a terrace, a compact sauna and bedroom tucked into the lower eaves, and a master suite on the upper level. The light-colored interior features a blend of modern furniture and repurposed vintage items, such as an oval window salvaged from a Tallinn Art Nouveau villa. A double bass is also repurposed as a shelf. Gaps in the floorboards upstairs allow warm air to rise and light to filter through, contributing to the feeling of airiness. The house rests on a concrete slab and features a timber frame. Steel elements were used to ensure the rigidity of the moving shutters. Awards and recognition 2021 Estonian Architecture Awards (ERAMU prize): Winner for a private house. 2021 Estonian Association of Interior Architects: Nominee for the annual award.
