- The Hermitage Cabin | llabb Architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The hermitage is a space of contemplation and reflection. Isolated from the world, it overlooks a still wild valley, secluded from everything. Space, not place. This is defined by wood panel, vertical and horizontal lines that are tuned in a thin yet clear equilibrium. The artefact is a hybridization between a Japanese tea house and a Scandinavian Cabin. It seems to recall the use of materials typically used in architecture, like metal facades and beam structures, reinterpreting through the use of wood. The project was realized in two weeks by the studio team, in order to deepen compositional themes and to transmit the “design with your hands” approach to the studio. This “know how” is always characterized by the llabb architettura work. - Clear Rock Ranch | Lemmo Architecture and Design | ZHIG
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Studio | Situated within the expansive, 1,000-acre Clear Rock Ranch near Johnson City, Texas, the Clear Rock Lookout is a 450-square-foot structure completed in 2016 and designed by Ryan and Stephanie Lemmo of Lemmo Architecture and Design. The lookout was conceived as a multi-purpose building, serving as a hunting blind, a writing studio, and an observation deck that provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country. It is intentionally nestled below a limestone cliff edge, requiring it to be "discovered" by those approaching from the top of the mesa. The design is a celebration of simple materials and low-tech methods, with a focus on artistry and craftsmanship. To contrast with the ranch's more traditional Hill Country vernacular, the lookout features a modern form and was constructed with naturally weathering steel, also known as Cor-Ten steel. This choice was inspired by the owner's past, which included welding oil tanks, and allows the structure to age naturally and blend in with the surrounding terrain. Inside, the rough exterior gives way to a softer palette, with plain walls, wooden ceilings, and large floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with light and frame the views. The interior space is divided into a writing studio and a hunting blind, connected by a walkway that wraps around the exterior and leads to the rooftop observation deck. The careful detailing and use of warm woods contribute to the building's aesthetic as a "jewel box in the landscape". The thoughtful placement and design of the lookout were recognized with a 2017 AIA Austin Design Award. - Chalet M | Silvia Acar Arquitetura | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2018, Chalet M is a tiny, minimalist cabin designed by São Paulo-based architect Silvia Acar Arquitetura for a secluded woodland site in São Lourenço da Serra, Brazil. The 270-square-foot structure was created as a peaceful retreat for its owners to reconnect with nature. Due to the challenging, remote terrain and lack of vehicle access, all building materials were selected to be lightweight and were carried to the site by hand, ensuring the cabin has a minimal impact on the environment. The cabin was elevated off the ground on six cylindrical concrete columns, allowing it to rest lightly on the forest floor. The exterior is comprised of a massive hardwood structure covered with OSB plywood, a Tyvek air and water barrier, and corrugated metal sheets for the outer layer. Its dark exterior helps the structure blend seamlessly into the lush surrounding forest. A floor-to-ceiling glass facade is the focal point of the design and includes sliding glass panels that open onto a wooden deck. This feature visually and physically connects the interior with the landscape, which includes a lake and mountain views. Inside, the cabin's material palette consists of thermoacoustic insulation and light-toned paricá plywood for the walls, ceiling, and built-in furniture. A prefabricated fiberglass box base anchors the sleeping and storage area. The custom-built furnishings and compact design provide a cohesive, multifunctional space for sleeping, cooking, and simply enjoying the natural surroundings. - House MM | a2o2 arhitekti | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | House MM is a renovation project completed in 2020 by the Slovenian firm a2o2 arhitekti in Domžale, Slovenia. The project involved renovating a derelict early 20th-century house to retain its historic character while adapting it for modern living. The architects and owners aimed to present a financially viable and sustainable alternative to new construction, preserving a piece of the neighborhood's "anonymous built heritage". Design and architectural features Balancing old and new: The exterior of the original brick house, including the facades and window openings, was preserved. A new metal roof was installed to replace the original one, which was beyond repair. New, modern interventions were deliberately designed to be distinct from the old structure, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Open and layered interior: The interior was cleared of redundant layers to expose the original structure. A new wooden-clad service core was inserted inside, keeping it separate from the old walls. Vertical spatial sequence: The home is arranged vertically, featuring a kitchen and dining area at ground level. A double-height living space with a fireplace and a large window opens onto the garden, while a new mezzanine bedroom is situated above the kitchen. Materiality: The new additions are clad in timber, contrasting with the old masonry. The ground floor is finished with terrazzo, achieved by polishing the concrete flooring. The owners were actively involved in the renovation. With the help of a restoration specialist, they restored the original windows and helped with the interior paneling and terrazzo flooring. Client Description: the Architects Text description by House MM is a renovation project completed in 2020 by the Slovenian firm a2o2 arhitekti in Domžale, Slovenia. We share our name with a beautiful, remote, and historically important mountain in central Norway. Snøhetta is a place nobody is from, but anyone can experience. Creating places for societies to connect with each other and with the world around them is a primary motivation in our work. Dialogue and diversity empower this approach. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. Since those early projects, many other internationally acclaimed works have been realized around the globe. source: snohetta.com Category Mixed-use complex Post Type Building Project Type COMMERCIAL Country Japan Year 2027 Area 117,000 m2 Client Tokyu Corporation L Catterton Real Estate Tokyu Department Store Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member Civil Engineer Rosa Garcia Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more
- Refugio Calfuco | Tomás de Iruarrizaga Arquitectos | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Designed by Tomás de Iruarrizaga Arquitectos, the Refugio Calfuco is a 50-square-meter vertical cabin in the coastal Valdivian rainforest of Chile, completed in 2022. The cabin was built on slender concrete supports to minimize ground disturbance on its heavily forested site. With a small footprint measuring just 4 by 7 meters, the structure rises ten meters into the treetops to gain precious northern light, which is important in the humid, shadow-dappled environment. The cabin's exterior form is a sharply angled prism, designed to contrast with its organic surroundings. Constructed with traditional carpentry tools and techniques, the interior features warm, tactile laurel wood, which covers the walls, ceilings, and built-in furniture, reminiscent of a boat's cabin. A distinctive diagonal ridge beam creates a fishbone pattern overhead, adding to the architectural drama. The two-story layout cleverly maximizes every square centimeter, with bedrooms and a bathroom on the lower, more intimate level and an open-plan living and kitchen area on the upper level, offering panoramic views of the forest. - Holiday Home | Orange Architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Situated on the Dutch island of Texel, the Holiday Home by Orange Architects is a compact, 70-square-meter cabin designed to offer a flexible and sustainable retreat close to nature. Designed for a client who wanted to maximize the experience of their vacation, the house prioritizes social spaces during the day and adapts to become private sleeping quarters at night through a clever system of rotating panels and doors. The exterior is a striking, sculptural volume clad in black-stained timber, which allows the house to recede into its woodland surroundings while creating a bold aesthetic. In contrast, the interior features a bright and warm material palette of light-colored birch plywood, creating a seamless and spacious feeling throughout the compact home. During the day, the ground-floor living area, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom can be opened to create a single, fluid space. Large, five-meter-high glass windows and doors on the southern façade connect the living area to a covered terrace and the surrounding forest, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. At night, movable wooden panels can be rotated or closed to create private rooms, including an en-suite bathroom. A lofted level provides additional sleeping or living space. The design of the Holiday Home was guided by sustainability from the outset. The structure was prefabricated by a contractor on the mainland to minimize on-site waste and construction time. The use of all-electric systems, including rooftop solar panels, concrete floors for thermal mass, and a well-insulated envelope, ensures the home is fossil-fuel-free and energy efficient. - Les Rochers | la SHED architecture | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Les Rochers is a contemporary holiday home located on Île du Havre Aubert, one of the Magdalen Islands in Quebec, Canada. Designed by la Shed Architecture and completed in 2019, the project consists of a main house and a guest cabin, which serve as a retreat for a couple. Situated on a hillside with panoramic views of the sea, the house was conceived to provide a sophisticated getaway in a windswept landscape of shores, meadows, and dunes. The design is a modern interpretation of the traditional shingled houses and fishing huts found on the islands, but with a unique, contemporary twist. Instead of traditional vestibules, the architects used asymmetric gabled forms that appear sculptural and well-anchored in the local context. The exterior of the house and cabin is clad in untreated, natural-colored cedar shingles, which are left to weather naturally and harmonize with the coastal environment. Large windows are strategically placed to maximize the 360-degree views of the maritime landscape. Inside, the home features a minimalist and airy aesthetic. The open-plan layout creates a spacious feel within the compact footprint. The material palette includes both natural wood and clean, modern finishes. The project, including both the main house and guest cabin, has been recognized for its design, receiving a Platinum award at the 14th edition of the GRANDS PRIX DU DESIGN. - Residential Barn | BE Architektur | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | The Residential Barn is a 215 m² residential project located in the rural Reppischtal region, near Zurich, Switzerland. Designed and completed in 2022 by BE Architektur, the house reinterprets the traditional Swiss agricultural barn typology (known as a schüür) into a functional and sculptural family home. The design's main goal was to create a new home that respects and blends into its historical and agricultural context. BE Architektur's founder, Boris Egli, achieved this by taking typical barn characteristics and reinterpreting them in a modern way. From a distance, the house appears to be another unassuming outbuilding in the hamlet, but upon closer inspection, its contemporary nature is revealed. Key features of this reinterpretation include: Glazed spruce facade: The exterior is clad in the same type of timber used for traditional Swiss barns, but with a transparent glaze that allows the wood to weather naturally. Pitched tile roof: A classic pitched roof is topped with the same tile roofing as neighboring structures, helping the building blend in. Concealed fenestration: Operable windows are hidden behind wooden shutters, while large, fixed glazing is fronted by sliding wooden doors. This creates a cohesive, uniform facade that conceals the interior's domestic function. Inside, the house embraces a raw and unfinished aesthetic, using a minimalist material palette to create a series of interconnected, sculptural spaces. The interior functions, such as the bedrooms and closets, are housed within enclosed volumes that are "stacked" atop one another. This design recalls the idea of a barn as a storage space. The negative space created around these volumes forms a spacious, open living area with a sense of vertical and horizontal expanse. The interior features exposed concrete floors and walls finished with textured, light-grey plaster, creating a tactile and serene environment. The project showcases a blend of rustic inspiration with modern, sustainable techniques. A photovoltaic system is integrated onto the gently sloping concrete gable roof, ensuring the home's energy needs are met with solar power. The freestanding concrete two-car garage was built using the same timber formwork as the house's facade, creating visual continuity between the two structures. A raw steel beam is used as a minimalist gutter, extending beyond the base of the roof to define the structure's clean lines. - Angled Dwelling Unit (ADU) | Maddie and Ryan Chandler | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Conversion | The Angled Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a 500-square-foot home in St. Helena, California, designed by architects Maddie and Ryan Chandler of Chandler Workshop Architects for their own family. The project involved converting a 1950s garage and washroom, originally built in a walnut orchard, into a highly space-efficient residence. The design is a study in creative reuse and practical resourcefulness, featuring reclaimed and recycled materials that add character and a unique history to the small house. The house is distinguished by its angular geometry and facade of rusty metal, which reflects the industrial feel of its repurposed materials. Elements throughout the home have a past life, such as the rain screen made from vineyard stakes sourced from a friend's property and rollers for a kitchen storage space repurposed from skateboard wheels found at an estate sale. Inside, the design maximizes every inch of the small space, with an emphasis on functionality and light. The foundation was recycled from old planter boxes, and the building incorporates unexpected materials throughout. The extensive remodel includes a home office, a compact kitchen, a bathroom, and a sleeping loft, creating a comfortable and practical home within the limited footprint of the original garage. COMMERCIAL | Office Building | As an integrative local city center that is neatly positioned in the surrounding urban context, this project in the Neuperlach district in Munich clearly upgrades the architectural profile of this section of the town. The building complex offers a framework for public utilization, for 160 subsidized apartments, and for a number of social and cultural institutions. Forming a kind of a clasp, a flying roof ties the individual buildings of the new complex together. The private and public use of the roof gardens ensures a high level of identification on the part of the local residents. “From an architectural and urban planning point of view, the design of Delugan Meissl finally gives the center of Neuperlach the attention it deserves as a home to over 109,000 residents”, says Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Merk, Munich’s City Building Councilor. “The grand gesture of the building complex addresses the urban planning concept of the Hanns-Seidel-Square and offers an excellent framework of public use, as well as its use as a residential area. I am quite confident the lavish/bountiful public roof gardens will be an attraction not only to the residents of Neuperlach, but also for the whole of Munich.“ | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_44b9d3e8b00a42d39ec0aebb29144a28~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1900,h_950,al_c,q_85/Hanns-Seidel%20Platz%20(1).jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 6.1K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Hanns-Seidel Platz Hanns-Seidel-Platz, Munich, Germany dmaa.at Source: Published on Sep 30, 2023 by: CG artist Carl Hecht Premium Member More Buildings from Germany Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Delugan Meissl Associated Architects Austria Category: COMMERCIAL Office Building Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Germany Photographers: Architects: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects Area: 40.500 m² Year: City: Munich Construction: - Client Awarding Body GEWOFAG Description: the architects Text description by As an integrative local city center that is neatly positioned in the surrounding urban context, this project in the Neuperlach district in Munich clearly upgrades the architectural profile of this section of the town.
