Situated on a steep hillside, the cabin is elevated on stilts to maximize views of the surrounding coastal mountains and historic landscape. Its design was influenced by the site's unique history and melancholy atmosphere, serving as a minimalist mountain hideout for an academic couple. The exterior cladding is made from inexpensive pine planks that have been traditionally charred on-site. This natural, chemical-free process protects the wood from decay, rot, and insects, while also creating a distinct black aesthetic that helps the structure blend into the rugged terrain. The cabin is built from prefabricated structural insulated panels (SIPs), which helped keep costs down and allowed for quick, efficient assembly by a small team. The interior of the cabin is defined by its simplicity and warmth. Plywood panels line the walls, concealing pipes and electrical wiring while providing a cozy finish that contrasts with the exterior. The cabin draws inspiration from the classic image of snowbound cabins, where only the roof protrudes through the snow, and blends into its surroundings with deep gables that extend to the ground. The structure's angular shape and black-stained pinewood cladding contrast with the dramatic white winter landscape. The interior, which is spacious despite its compact size, is clad in a waxed poplar veneer, with uplifts in the sloped ceiling creating a rich spatial experience. An uninterrupted ceiling connects the living room, bedroom, ski room, and a small utility annex. A large, 4-meter-long window in the bedroom offers views of the treetops and night sky, enhancing the feeling of sleeping within nature. The off-grid cabin relies on solar power and a wood oven for energy. A unique and playful feature is the cabin's roof, which doubles as a ski slope or toboggan run during the snowy winters. RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | The Hiža house is a 230-square-meter renovation project by the Zagreb-based firm PROARH, led by architect Davor Matekovic, completed around 2015. Located on the green slopes near Kumrovec in the Zagorje region of Croatia, the project transformed a dilapidated, decades-old cottage into a modern and organic living space that honors local heritage. The design reinterprets traditional cottage architecture by combining natural materials with a bold, contemporary intervention. The ground floor is arranged around a central "hearth" in the traditional Zagorje manner. This approach of reinterpreting traditional construction technologies and using local, renewable resources demonstrates a commitment to sustainable, low-impact design. The house is composed of two main sections, each defined by a different material and texture. One volume is clad in near-black timber shingles, referencing original mountain homes and housing the sheltered porch and entrance, as well as a bedroom above. The other volume features a smooth white ceramic surface and contains the combined living, dining, and kitchen area. A large picture window on the south side of the white volume creates a strong connection between the interior and the idyllic pine forest and hilly terrain outside. One volume is clad in near-black timber shingles, referencing original mountain homes and housing the sheltered porch and entrance, as well as a bedroom above. The other volume features a smooth white ceramic surface and contains the combined living, dining, and kitchen area. A large picture window on the south side of the white volume creates a strong connection between the interior and the idyllic pine forest and hilly terrain outside. The interior maintains a minimalist aesthetic, allowing the focus to remain on the large window and the surrounding landscape. The design and construction process was constrained by a relatively low budget and the site's inaccessibility, which led the architects to create an architecture of simple, robust gestures using locally available materials like pine wood from nearby forests. The resulting structure, with its monochromatic and asymmetrical form, successfully blends with its natural surroundings while offering a modern, contemplative retreat for its inhabitants.
