Completed in 2016, the house was designed as a simple, economical, and functional year-round residence that blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings. The house has a distinctive, asymmetrical shape determined by the functional needs of the interior. Its exterior, clad in dark, blackened pine boards, allows the structure to recede into the shadows of the surrounding trees. The dark facade also helps the building to absorb solar heat, which contributes to warming the interior. In contrast, the interior features natural-colored wood, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Windows are irregularly placed to frame specific views of the forest and meadows, connecting the interior to the lush landscape. The ground floor features an open-plan layout, with a spacious day zone encompassing the living room, dining area, and a kitchen annex, which has direct access to a terrace. A central staircase divides the open living space from a more private section that includes the main bedroom, a bathroom, and a toilet. The asymmetrical roof provides enough height for a mezzanine level, which houses two guest bedrooms. The house is built using a traditional timber-framed skeletal construction, with the exterior clad in locally sourced pine. Located on a 10,000-square-meter plot in the wild landscape of southeastern Mexico, the house is a secluded retreat that encourages contemplation and a close connection to its natural surroundings. The structure is a simple and compact two-story volume set on a platform elevated off the ground. This elevation helps protect against undesirable animals and facilitates construction on the site's rocky terrain, which prevented excavation. The home is strategically oriented to work with the region's dominant winds and sun exposure, ensuring a comfortable interior temperature. The exterior and interior are finished with a rough stucco and an artisanal lime-based paint with mineral pigments, giving the building a natural, reddish tone that blends with the surrounding soil. Regional cedar wood is used for the folding doors and operable louvers, allowing residents to control the amount of privacy and connection to the outdoors. A pre-existing tree provides shade for the swimming pool and terrace, an extension of the interior social area. The compact interior includes a double-height living room with a kitchenette, a sleeping mezzanine, and a bathroom with an outdoor shower. The interior design features a collection of locally crafted design pieces in natural tones that enhance the space's warmth and connection to the region. TACO (taller de arquitectura contextual) is a multidisciplinary architectural workshop based in Mérida, Mexico, led by founder Carlos Patrón Ibarra, and focused on creating context-sensitive, identity-driven projects. The firm's design philosophy is rooted in a deep analysis of each project's context, considering everything from nature and built surroundings to culture, history, and user characteristics. This holistic approach results in designs with a strong sense of identity and connection to the site. The workshop integrates design and construction, working with local artisans to craft sustainable and cost-effective solutions. Their portfolio includes residential, urban, interior, and landscape projects, and has received international recognition. Located in Claverack, New York, just outside the city of Hudson, the house is a prototype for LOT-EK's c-Home series, which aims to produce sustainable, design-forward homes from reclaimed materials. The 1,920-square-foot residence features a straightforward design, with the containers arranged in a 3-by-2 stack to form a two-story volume. The design is notable for its use of the shipping containers' original material and industrial aesthetic. Large, triangular-shaped cuts were made into the corrugated steel shells and replaced with expansive glass walls, creating a striking visual contrast and allowing for abundant natural light and ventilation. These geometric cuts not only define the facade but also extend to form the front and rear decks, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The first floor includes an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. Upstairs, the two bedrooms function as private suites, each with its own staircase, a full bathroom, and a walk-in closet. An external staircase leads to a green roof and deck, adding further outdoor space. The house also retains much of the containers' original character, with exposed steel and the wooden flooring on the interior. The pre-fabricated construction method allowed the house to be assembled on-site quickly, with the modules built off-site and then delivered and stacked into place.
