Located on a sand dune near a fishing village at the mouth of the Taieri River on New Zealand's South Island, the project was completed in 2013 and took only eight weeks to build. The modest 55-square-meter dwelling was designed with a simple gabled form and honest, natural, and robust materials, paying homage to the original, often handmade, fishing huts and baches of the area. The bach's straightforward and economical construction is balanced by a striking, fully-glazed end wall that offers expansive views of the surrounding dune, Moturata Island, and Taieri Beach. To minimize view obstruction while ensuring the structure's stability against high winds and earthquakes, the glazed gable end is reinforced with a system of steel tension rods arranged in an X pattern. An open-plan living area occupies most of the ground floor, featuring a vaulted ceiling that rises to the roof ridge. Another wall with large sliding glass doors opens the living space to a timber patio on the sunny north side. The kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and storage areas are located at the back of the house. Located on a sand dune near a fishing village at the mouth of the Taieri River on New Zealand's South Island, the project was completed in 2013 and took only eight weeks to build. The modest 55-square-meter dwelling was designed with a simple gabled form and honest, natural, and robust materials, paying homage to the original, often handmade, fishing huts and baches of the area. The bach's straightforward and economical construction is balanced by a striking, fully-glazed end wall that offers expansive views of the surrounding dune, Moturata Island, and Taieri Beach. To minimize view obstruction while ensuring the structure's stability against high winds and earthquakes, the glazed gable end is reinforced with a system of steel tension rods arranged in an X pattern. An open-plan living area occupies most of the ground floor, featuring a vaulted ceiling that rises to the roof ridge. Another wall with large sliding glass doors opens the living space to a timber patio on the sunny north side. The kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and storage areas are located at the back of the house. The project has been praised for its simplicity, charm, and unquestionable sustainability, with minimal waste during design and construction. It was a recipient of a NZIA Residential Award and a Supreme Timber Building Award at the 2013 New Zealand Wood Awards. The project, documented on his YouTube channel, is a modern and humble take on a basic alpine hut. The 12x16.5-foot cabin was built by Waldman and Molly using salvaged and site-milled redwood from trees killed in the fire, as well as some new materials. The cabin features a simple layout with an open kitchen, a small bedroom, and a bathroom. Its defining saltbox roof is low-slung and provides a high ceiling on the taller side, creating a cozy yet spacious feel inside. The design also incorporates unconventional, exposed framing and post-and-beam construction. Globe Website & Links: Visit Buildings Projects Inspiration No Projects yet. 135.Saltbox Cabin by elevatedspaces (1).jpg Following a devastating wildfire, self-taught designer and builder Jeff Waldman, along with his partner Molly, was inspired to construct the 198-square-foot Saltbox Cabin as a more modest replacement for their previous home. The project, documented on his YouTube channel, is a modern and humble take on a basic alpine hut. The 12x16.5-foot cabin was built by Waldman and Molly using salvaged and site-milled redwood from trees killed in the fire, as well as some new materials. The cabin features a simple layout with an open kitchen, a small bedroom, and a bathroom. Its defining saltbox roof is low-slung and provides a high ceiling on the taller side, creating a cozy yet spacious feel inside. The design also incorporates unconventional, exposed framing and post-and-beam construction. A portion of the $17,400 material cost went toward salvaged old-growth redwood and modern French doors and sliding windows. The project's philosophy focuses on sustainability, community, and skill-building. The use of fire-killed and salvaged wood highlights a regenerative approach to building. Waldman has shared the knowledge gained from the build on his "Elevated Spaces" platforms, including a build guide and video, to encourage others to take on similar projects. The 1,920-square-foot residence features a straightforward design, with the containers arranged in a 3-by-2 stack to form a two-story volume. The design is notable for its use of the shipping containers' original material and industrial aesthetic. Large, triangular-shaped cuts were made into the corrugated steel shells and replaced with expansive glass walls, creating a striking visual contrast and allowing for abundant natural light and ventilation. These geometric cuts not only define the facade but also extend to form the front and rear decks, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The first floor includes an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. Upstairs, the two bedrooms function as private suites, each with its own staircase, a full bathroom, and a walk-in closet. An external staircase leads to a green roof and deck, adding further outdoor space. The house also retains much of the containers' original character, with exposed steel and the wooden flooring on the interior. The pre-fabricated construction method allowed the house to be assembled on-site quickly, with the modules built off-site and then delivered and stacked into place.
