Completed in 2019, the temporary, 204-square-foot modular cabin was built on the remote Piz Lunghin mountain in the Swiss Alps, an area at over 2,500 meters of elevation. The project was created to celebrate the company's origins and to mark the launch of its first hiking shoe. It was only accessible by foot, and after its limited run, it was disassembled to leave no trace on the pristine alpine landscape The hut's design emphasized minimalism and reduction. The exterior was clad in a reflective metal that helped it blend into its natural, mountainous surroundings. Inside, the cabin was lined almost entirely with warm, inviting plywood, used for the floors, walls, and built-in tables. A wood-burning stove provided warmth, creating a cozy atmosphere. The cabin featured a series of platforms that led guests from the entrance to a large glass viewpoint overlooking the valley. A lofted mezzanine with a bed offered a unique and elevated vantage point for taking in the stunning views. The off-grid structure was powered by solar panels and a rainwater collection system. Conceived as a modern and low-impact alternative to camping, the huts were designed for a client who wanted to provide guest accommodations on the site of a former RV campground while allowing the landscape to return to its natural state. The cabins sit on oversized steel wheels, a creative solution to local zoning regulations that prohibited permanent structures but permitted RVs. This wheeled foundation elevates the huts a short distance above the meadow, allowing native grasses to grow underneath and minimizing the human footprint on the sensitive environment. The 200-square-foot cabins, completed in 2008, are essentially minimalist, steel-clad boxes on a steel and wood platform. Large, double-paned sliding glass doors at one end of each hut open onto a covered deck, extending the usable space into the outdoors. Inside, the material palette is simple, raw, and inexpensive, featuring cork and plywood left as natural as possible. A lopsided, inverted V-shaped roof with clerestory windows floats above the walls, bringing ample natural light into the compact interior. While the cabins offer a warm, sheltered, and low-tech space, showers and other communal facilities are located in a central barn, reinforcing the project's connection to camping. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Hemlock Residence is a 3,200-square-foot modern mountain home designed by Alexander Jermyn Architecture. Completed in 2021, the house is located on the edge of a mountain lake in Soda Springs, California, within the Sierra Nevada mountains. The design responds to the region's harsh seasonal climate, which includes heavy snowfall and wildfire risk, by combining durable materials and contrasting a dark exterior with a light interior. The structure features a gabled upper volume clad in charred Accoya wood, created using the shou sugi ban technique. This material floats above a sturdy concrete base, which protects against heavy snow loads and acts as a protective hull against the elements. The charred wood finish also contrasts with the white of the snow. In contrast to the dark exterior, the interior has a light, neutral palette with white walls and bleached clear vertical grain hemlock. A light-filled staircase with patinated steel pickets connects the levels. Layout: The primary living and dining areas are on the second floor to maximize the view of the lake. A mezzanine artist's studio, lit by a skylight, is tucked into the gabled roof above the kitchen. The ground floor includes a garage, ski-tuning station, laundry room, media room, and guest rooms. Built-in features: Built-in benches and nooks were integrated throughout the space to define more intimate areas and maximize efficiency. A bunk room can sleep 4–8 people and includes powered cubbies for remote work or entertainment. The lakeside facade features a fully glazed wall with sliding glass doors, providing a strong visual and physical connection to the landscape. Completed in 2021, the house is located on the edge of a mountain lake in Soda Springs, California, within the Sierra Nevada mountains. The design responds to the region's harsh seasonal climate, which includes heavy snowfall and wildfire risk, by combining durable materials and contrasting a dark exterior with a light interior. The structure features a gabled upper volume clad in charred Accoya wood, created using the shou sugi ban technique. This material floats above a sturdy concrete base, which protects against heavy snow loads and acts as a protective hull against the elements. The charred wood finish also contrasts with the white of the snow. In contrast to the dark exterior, the interior has a light, neutral palette with white walls and bleached clear vertical grain hemlock. A light-filled staircase with patinated steel pickets connects the levels. Layout: The primary living and dining areas are on the second floor to maximize the view of the lake. A mezzanine artist's studio, lit by a skylight, is tucked into the gabled roof above the kitchen. The ground floor includes a garage, ski-tuning station, laundry room, media room, and guest rooms. Built-in features: Built-in benches and nooks were integrated throughout the space to define more intimate areas and maximize efficiency. A bunk room can sleep 4–8 people and includes powered cubbies for remote work or entertainment. The outer walls are constructed from irregular fieldstone and bluestone, echoing the dry-stacked stone walls found throughout historic New England. The fieldstone gives the impression of repurposed ruins, while a robust steel structure within provides modern stability and insulation. A glass-walled writing room dramatically cantilevers over a rocky ravine, providing a dynamic connection to nature. Inside, the studio is a cozy and functional space. Fumed oak planks are used for the floors and ceilings, adding warmth and texture. Built-in oak shelving provides ample storage for the owner’s extensive collection of 1,700 volumes of poetry and conceals a trundle bed for guests.
