To construct the home with minimal disruption to the forest, large machinery was not permitted on-site, and materials had to be carried in by hand. The trees removed during construction were repurposed to create the outdoor benches. Large panoramic windows were incorporated to blur the line between interior and exterior, framing spectacular views of the lake and ensuring that each room feels spacious despite the home's compact size. Reflecting Laajisto's Scandinavian design philosophy of not cluttering the world with unnecessary things, the interior is crafted from a warm, natural material palette that includes Douglas fir, light pine, and oak. Wide oak floorboards provide a sense of refined rusticity, while grey marble countertops and a fireplace in the living area add warmth and sophistication. The kitchen was intentionally kept simple and stripped back to maintain the character of a cabin rather than a residential home. In a nod to a classic Finnish feature, the house includes a sauna, which, along with the bathroom, is adorned with deep red tiles in a herringbone pattern. Villa Rauhanniemi was also conceived with sustainability in mind. Laajisto and her family own the adjacent plot of land, which they maintain as a wild forest and a carbon sink to balance the home's footprint. RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2020, The Author's House is a private, 68-square-meter writing and living retreat designed by Danish architectural firm SLETH. Situated in a protected forest near Aarhus, Denmark, the cabin is a contemporary interpretation of the classic woodland cabin, designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. It was built on the existing plinth of a previous summer house, adhering to the area's strict building regulations. The client, a writer, sought an inspirational workspace that offered a close connection to nature, rather than a traditional holiday home. This focus on work over residence is reflected in the layout, which dedicates most of the space to a large, flexible living and studio area, with only a small sleeping loft and bathroom. The design emphasizes the transition between inside and out. Large, sliding glass doors allow the interior to extend onto an outdoor terrace, a feature that allows the writer to work in direct connection with the forest. The exterior is clad in a dark, reddish-brown copper, chosen to blend with the trunks of the surrounding beech trees and a nearby lake. This copper façade will naturally patinate over time, gradually turning green to further integrate the structure into the landscape. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural. The flooring, a mottled aggregate concrete, mimics the forest floor and extends out onto the terrace to blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. The interior is dominated by Douglas fir wood from Danish manufacturer Dinesen, used for the ceilings, built-in furniture, kitchen, staircase, and the home's walls, which are also lined with bookcases. In a splash of vibrant color, the fireplace is painted in a deep, electric blue. The project also features sustainable measures, including geothermal heating and an efficient use of materials, where leftover wood planks were used for additional furnishings. RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | The 600-square-foot Cabin K, also known as Saimaa Cabin, is a summer retreat in Finland designed by Seattle-based Studio Kamppari and completed around 2016. Perched on a granite ridge in a high-latitude pine forest, the cabin was built as a guest cabin and owner's retreat for an engineer who wanted to host his extended family and reconnect with the natural landscape. The design is a modern take on the traditional Finnish log cabin, blending traditional forms with contemporary details and focusing on natural light and open space. To minimize the impact on the site, which included a delicate landscape on a narrow ridge, the cabin's logs and window assemblies were prefabricated off-site and lifted into place by a crane. Built on post foundations, the cabin combines the traditional gable roof and log walls of Finnish cabins with unexpected details, volume, and quality of light. Locally sourced materials were used to complete the project on a limited budget. The exterior is protected from the elements by vertical pine screening treated with iron oxide, which accelerates the natural graying of the wood. The interior, in contrast, features untreated pine log walls and bare roof rafters, creating a warm and rustic aesthetic. The layout includes a double-height living room with oversized operable windows on the north and south sides that frame panoramic views of the forest and Lake Saimaa, blending the indoors with the outdoors. A whimsical, treehouse-like loft provides a cozy retreat, and two generous bedrooms bookend the living space. Designed and completed in 2022 by BE Architektur, the house reinterprets the traditional Swiss agricultural barn typology (known as a schüür) into a functional and sculptural family home. The design's main goal was to create a new home that respects and blends into its historical and agricultural context. BE Architektur's founder, Boris Egli, achieved this by taking typical barn characteristics and reinterpreting them in a modern way. From a distance, the house appears to be another unassuming outbuilding in the hamlet, but upon closer inspection, its contemporary nature is revealed. Key features of this reinterpretation include: Glazed spruce facade: The exterior is clad in the same type of timber used for traditional Swiss barns, but with a transparent glaze that allows the wood to weather naturally. Pitched tile roof: A classic pitched roof is topped with the same tile roofing as neighboring structures, helping the building blend in. Concealed fenestration: Operable windows are hidden behind wooden shutters, while large, fixed glazing is fronted by sliding wooden doors. This creates a cohesive, uniform facade that conceals the interior's domestic function. Inside, the house embraces a raw and unfinished aesthetic, using a minimalist material palette to create a series of interconnected, sculptural spaces. The interior functions, such as the bedrooms and closets, are housed within enclosed volumes that are "stacked" atop one another. This design recalls the idea of a barn as a storage space. The negative space created around these volumes forms a spacious, open living area with a sense of vertical and horizontal expanse. The interior features exposed concrete floors and walls finished with textured, light-grey plaster, creating a tactile and serene environment. The project showcases a blend of rustic inspiration with modern, sustainable techniques. A photovoltaic system is integrated onto the gently sloping concrete gable roof, ensuring the home's energy needs are met with solar power. The freestanding concrete two-car garage was built using the same timber formwork as the house's facade, creating visual continuity between the two structures. A raw steel beam is used as a minimalist gutter, extending beyond the base of the roof to define the structure's clean lines. FINANCIAL | mixed-used | Century Spire is a mixed-used, 60-story tower in Manila’s Makati district – the Philippines’ financial and economic hub.  The tower has a diagonally braced structure with a facade that is clad in a semi-reflective glass curtain.  It is articulated with balconies and terraces to create a rhythmic geometric pattern.  As the tower rises, three branches expand reaching different heights and form a dramatic crown at the top. The upper floors will be comprised of residential units that include one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, along with suites, duplexes and penthouses.  Each unit will feature floor to ceiling glazing and a unique floor plan.  The building additionally has two floors of amenities for its residents as well as underground parking.  At the base of the tower there will be dedicated office spaces. Inspired by naval architecture, the design features a compact, three-story volume that maximizes space through a vertical distribution of functions. The exterior is clad in yellow pine wood with an amber hue, which is contrasted by a canopy of dark clay tiles supported by large eaves. These materials were chosen to resonate with the surrounding landscape and to reflect the effects of time and weather. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural, with exposed wood complemented by woven rugs, clay lamps, and visible pipes and mechanisms. Built in 2019, the 850-square-foot cabin (79 square meters) is positioned on a raised platform supported by four-foot-tall metal stilts, which protects it from the area's risk of flooding and preserves the natural terrain. A wooden footbridge connects the entrance of the house to a small path that leads to the nearby beach. The cabin's design draws inspiration from traditional Scandinavian architecture, featuring a dark exterior that allows it to blend into the surrounding landscape of tall cypress trees. The cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure is insulated with blown-in cellulose wadding and clad with rough-sawn wood strips painted with black Falun-style paint, a durable Swedish pigment. At night, the house disappears into the darkness, with only the illuminated windows visible like hanging lanterns. Inside, the warm, spruce-clad living spaces are designed with function in mind, stripped of the superfluous. The architects used rough-sawn wood panels for the built-in benches, dining table, shelving, and counters. The open-plan space is punctuated by strategically placed windows that frame specific views of the landscape. The large fixed window in the corner seating nook offers pastoral scenery, while a western bay window can be opened to extend the main room onto the terrace, blurring the line between inside and outside. Upstairs, the four sleeping areas are designed like small cabins. Each features small, eye-level windows that provide views of the landscape for those lying down and can accommodate two single beds, with a built-in bench on one side and a storage area on the other. URBAN | Mixed-use development | Anfa Place is a mixed-use development on the Atlantic coast to the west of Casablanca, close to the city’s affluent residential district of Anfa. The design takes advantage of the site’s magnificent natural setting – the 90,000-square-metre scheme extends the city to the shoreline by creating a new waterfront quarter, with places to live, offices, shops, cafes, leisure facilities and a five-star hotel. The spaces are carved into the cliff-side beneath the existing corniche, drawing the city towards the sea with a series of stepped terraces. An elevated promenade leads to a plaza with cafes, restaurants and bars and breaks down the barrier that previously existed between the road and the beach. Pedestrians access the apartments at roof-level, via gardens and bridges, and discreet ramps lead cars to underground parking. The buildings then extend along the corniche: there is a hotel, swimming pool, courtyard and spa facilities at the north eastern tip, and offices and a ‘business club’ – comprising shared conference facilities and office space, a pool and serviced apartments – towards the south west of the site. The centre of the development is arranged as seven ‘fingers’ containing 260 private apartments. These extend towards the ocean and are staggered to allow even those furthest from the beach to have sea views. RESIDENTIAL | Tiny House | Designed by Memphis-based firm Archimania, the Nash Tiny House is a minimalist weekend home situated on a family property outside of Starkville, Mississippi. Located on the exact site of a fishing trailer that belonged to the clients' father, the tiny house honors the family's history while providing a modern, low-maintenance escape. The property is nestled within a natural clearing of pine, oak, and hickory trees, offering picturesque western views of a pond. The tiny house is wrapped in a continuous roof and wall plane, which is clad in durable, low-maintenance metal panels. Galvanized standing-seam panels on the main surface provide a distinct vertical rhythm, while charcoal corrugated metal panels on other walls offer a different texture and scale. The use of concrete masonry units and pressure-treated wood further enhances the home's longevity and minimal upkeep. A prominent, full-length front porch extends the living space outdoors and spans the width of the house. It sits within the space created by the continuous roof and wall plane, offering a sheltered spot to enjoy the pond views and natural surroundings. It is located in Nissedal, a municipality in the Telemark region of Norway, on the banks of Lake Nisser. Commissioned by Smarte Hytter AS, a local cabin developer, the project was intended as a sustainable and compact alternative to the trend of large, luxurious holiday homes that are common in Norway. The architects' ultimate goal is to develop a floating version of the cabin, but due to local planning restrictions on Lake Nisser, the prototype was built on stilts on the shore. The design of the cabin maximizes the user's connection to the surrounding landscape. A large, glazed facade between the main living area and a covered terrace blurs the line between indoor and outdoor space, creating a seamless link to the lake and landscape. The exterior is clad in thermally treated pinewood, a sustainable and chemical-free material that gives the cabin a natural, integrated feel within its environment. This exterior cladding also has integrated gutters and downpipes, which creates clean, expressive facades. The compact, 26-square-meter floor plan includes a small mezzanine loft for sleeping, with a total capacity to accommodate up to seven people. The module is connected to electricity, water, and sewage via a flexible pipe that enters from beneath, a system designed to be compatible with a future floating version.
