Completed in 2018, the 571-square-foot project offers a solution for multigenerational living in cities with limited housing options, providing a safe, accessible, and private home for an aging family member. The project was designed with both immediate and future needs in mind. To accommodate the decreased mobility of the elderly family member, the entire living area was designed on a single level. The layout flows seamlessly from the entry and kitchen to the bedroom and bathroom. To prevent the small space from feeling cramped, the design incorporates a number of strategies to increase the perception of volume. Exposed rafters emphasize the high ceilings, and strategically placed skylights and windows flood the While the design is currently optimized for a single occupant, the architects considered its long-term potential. The lofted area above the bathroom, currently used for storage, could be converted into an office, a sleeping space, or a creative studio in the future. This adaptability future-proofs the investment and offers flexible housing options for the family. The architects creatively worked with the site's natural six-foot slope, building the Granny Pad into the hill. This allowed for the inclusion of a lofted space and a private back deck connecting to the unit. The Granny Pad is a thoughtful and functional conversion that makes the most of its small footprint. The garage door was removed and the original garage structure now serves as the entry, kitchen, and sitting room. The floor plan places the private areas—the bedroom, bathroom, and laundry—at the rear of the unit. A small, secluded deck and garden area provides a private outdoor retreat for the resident. Completed for the Selucente hospitality project in Garessio, Italy, the structure was inspired by the traditional barns and huts common in the rural Alpine landscape. Measuring 5 by 3 meters, the GlamBOX is crafted from chestnut wood and designed to combine rustic charm with an innovative function: providing guests with a unique, open-air stargazing experience. About Contact Buildings Projects Architects People Brands 0 0 0 0 0 Join Architecture in Sint Maarten (the southern, Dutch constituent country of the island of Saint Martin) is a unique, high-density narrative of Caribbean climate adaptation, historic salt-mining trade, and rapid modern commercial tourism. Positioned outside the traditional calm zone and exposed to intense hurricane paths, its built identity has transitioned rapidly from quaint, Dutch-Caribbean timber cottages into a robust, concrete-dominated landscape of large-scale cruise ports, high-density timeshare resorts, and commercial shopping centers. The nation's built identity balances ancient stone monasteries built to withstand seismic activity, iconic wooden urban houses with decorative balconies, and striking 20th-century Soviet avant-garde structures alongside futuristic contemporary public engineering. Originally conceived as a weekend getaway, the project evolved into a more permanent refuge for the designer. Nestled in a location with no electricity, phone reception, or neighbors, the cabin is a testament to mindful, solitary living. The small, one-room structure is built with a lightweight, timber-frame construction. A unique feature of the design is the use of sliding floor-to-ceiling glass doors on one side, which not only provide expansive views of the wooded surroundings but also fully open to connect the interior with the natural landscape. When fully open, the cabin essentially becomes a semi-enclosed terrace, blurring the line between inside and out. Inside, the space features a polished concrete floor and a central steel-plate fireplace that creates a focal point. A black, custom-built kitchen is integrated into the wall opposite the fireplace, while a bathtub is strategically placed in front of the large windows to maximize the view. The ceiling is finished with pine plywood panels, while a skylight over the bed bathes the room in natural light. The project was built over five months with the help of a small team of local carpenters. Materials were sourced locally, with the primary construction using timber and stone from the area, a choice that grounded the building in its natural surroundings. The home's design reflects a philosophy of prioritizing a connection to nature over modern conveniences, offering a quiet escape from the distractions of city life. - Fjällhus (Mountain Lodge) | PS Arkitektur | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Lodge | The Fjällhus, or Mountain Lodge, designed by PS Arkitektur, is a prefabricated holiday retreat located in the snowy fells of Härjedalen, Sweden. Conceived by architect Peter Sahlin in 2005 for his own family, the design is a modern interpretation of a traditional local barn. It has since been replicated for other clients seeking a simple, compact, and comfortable escape in a mountainous setting. The project's aesthetic is defined by a modest and modern approach, with a focus on functional design suited for cold climates. The exterior of the cabin features an ebony-stained clapboard facade that helps it blend into the surrounding woods. The design is deliberately understated, with clean lines that recall the classic barn shape. This simple form makes the lodge's prefabricated construction practical for delivery and assembly in remote locations. Inside, the design contrasts the dark exterior with a warm, natural material palette. The interior is clad in unfinished plywood, complemented by gray industrial kitchen cabinets, creating a balance of ruggedness and modern polish. The lodge was initially developed for Sahlin's personal use, highlighting its practical and personal origins. The design's success led to its subsequent production for other urban professionals who desired a quiet, modern vacation home that could withstand the harsh conditions of the Swedish fells. The prefabricated units are constructed off-site and delivered to their destination, a process that simplifies construction in the challenging mountain environment. Architecture Office | At first glance, insignificant details shape the uniqueness of our lives. And we, in our work, look for the magic of these little things in ordinary objects around us and in things that inspire us. The first independent projects of A1 Architects date back to the year 2003. Two years later, a studio and a creative workshop were formed in Prague. Today, this studio is built on the works of architects Lenka Křemenová and David Maštálka, who initially studied together at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_606e8d9945a64adf921accff0f55602f~mv2.png PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe A1Architects Czechia Small Title 2003 Since Architecture Office ---- 1 Project 1.0K Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info.
