MASTER PLAN | Housing development | Studio Libeskind’s first project in Albania, the Magnet housing development, consists of a master plan for a new residential neighborhood within walking distance of Tirana’s city center, along with the design for Eagle in Flight, the first 13,000 square meter tower within the master plan to serve as a catalyst for revitalizing the entire district. The masterplan was tailored around a complex site that lacked any public streets. Studio Libeskind opted to keep the site car-free and created a system of interconnected green courtyards linked by pedestrian and cycle paths. The buildings around each courtyard are varied in scale, orientation and typology to prevent monotony and maximize light and air. The design is a contemporary expression of the traditional Finnish cabin, composed of four interconnected sections of varying heights. The units are joined by a central, sheltered terrace that serves as a shared outdoor living space. A narrow, inviting entrance is nestled between the two primary volumes, offering a first glimpse of the landscape beyond. The layout was specifically crafted to ensure that each unit enjoys equally impressive views, while interior sightlines between the two are intentionally limited, creating a sense of shared presence without sacrificing privacy. The holiday home was constructed using a prefabricated 180mm log frame, which was then clad in vertical spruce with a silicon treatment to achieve a weathered silver-grey finish that blends with the natural surroundings over time. The interior spaces celebrate this honest material palette, with visible roof beams and exposed wooden surfaces treated with lye to create a bright, serene atmosphere. Striking black fireplaces and dark built-in furniture provide a contemporary contrast to the light wood. Sustainability was a key consideration in the project. The building utilizes a prefab structure to minimize waste and features glue-laminated timber beams and recycled wood fiber insulation. Natural ventilation, air-source heat pumps, and underfloor heating contribute to the home's energy efficiency. This vacation residence thoughtfully balances communal living with the need for individual privacy by dividing the program into two distinct units. The structures are arranged in a ""down-to-earth"" fan shape that preserves the surrounding pine trees and visible rocks, with the buildings' large windows oriented to maximize views toward the sea. The design is a contemporary expression of the traditional Finnish cabin, composed of four interconnected sections of varying heights. The units are joined by a central, sheltered terrace that serves as a shared outdoor living space. A narrow, inviting entrance is nestled between the two primary volumes, offering a first glimpse of the landscape beyond. The layout was specifically crafted to ensure that each unit enjoys equally impressive views, while interior sightlines between the two are intentionally limited, creating a sense of shared presence without sacrificing privacy. The holiday home was constructed using a prefabricated 180mm log frame, which was then clad in vertical spruce with a silicon treatment to achieve a weathered silver-grey finish that blends with the natural surroundings over time. The interior spaces celebrate this honest material palette, with visible roof beams and exposed wooden surfaces treated with lye to create a bright, serene atmosphere. The house draws inspiration from Skagen's "Black Period," when charred wood from shipwrecks was used to build houses. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Remote Lake Cabin is a sustainable, off-grid retreat designed by Vermont-based Stonorov Workshop and completed in 2020. It is situated in the heavily wooded Adirondack Mountains of New York, on a lake accessible only by boat, and was designed for a family that has spent summers in the area for generations. The 783-square-foot, two-bedroom cabin was constructed with minimal impact on the environment and stands elevated on stilts, allowing the existing ecosystem to thrive beneath it. To avoid disturbing the forest, construction was carried out with hand tools and smaller equipment, with the firm's partner, Otto Stonorov, hand-building much of the structure using a human-powered chain hoist to raise large timbers. The design is a simple and honest expression of its materials and site. The structure is a wood-clad timber frame joined with steel components, with locally sourced hemlock forming the main frame and white pine used for the siding and floors. Extensive glazing offers panoramic views of the forest and lake, particularly from the master bedroom and a main living area that extends onto a deck through a large window and door. The off-grid property is powered by a solar array located elsewhere on-site, and a sustainable filtration system purifies lake water for in-home use. HOSPITALITY | Lodge | Located amid a pine forest in the Poltava region of Ukraine, the Guest Houses in Relax Park Verholy were designed by the Kyiv-based firm YOD Group. The project is an ongoing collaboration, with different versions of the guest houses, such as Guest Houses 3.0 and Chalet 4.0, completed in 2019 and 2016, respectively. The overarching concept is to provide a secluded, modernist escape where guests can feel closely connected to the surrounding nature. The guest houses are constructed using a prefabricated, lightweight metal frame. To minimize environmental impact on the pine forest, they are not built on traditional solid foundations but on a screw-base system. This technology allows the structures to be positioned quickly and without damaging trees or their root systems. The buildings are also elevated above the ground, which assists with waterproofing. The exterior cladding consists of heat-treated wood, which not only provides weather protection but also reflects the natural surroundings with its dark, sleek appearance. Inside, the interior design is minimalist and emphasizes natural materials, such as timber and stone, to extend the forest atmosphere into the living spaces. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic glazing further integrate the interior with the surrounding pine trees.
