MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Boathouse | Tucked into the base of a Pōhutukawa-lined cliff in Auckland's Herne Bay, Boathouse 01 by Michael Cooper Architects is a modern and elegant solution for waterside living. The boathouse was designed to provide clients with a practical space for storing and launching their boats, including a powerboat and a fully rigged Laser yacht, while creating a graceful connection to the Waitematā Harbour. Its design is a contemporary take on the traditional gable house, featuring an asymmetrical form tailored to its function and location. The exterior is defined by a refined material palette, with dark corrugated metal cladding that allows the structure to recede respectfully into the cliff's edge. This is complemented by purpleheart hardwood decking that extends from the structure, creating a seamless transition to the water's edge. The most striking exterior feature is the translucent cladding on the front and rear of the building. When the large doors are open, this cladding evokes the sails of a yacht, while at night, with the doors closed, the boathouse glows like a ship's lantern. Inside, the architecture is designed for both function and beauty within a maritime environment. The walls are lined with Meranti ply, and custom shelving provides integrated storage. The boathouse was designed to provide clients with a practical space for storing and launching their boats, including a powerboat and a fully rigged Laser yacht, while creating a graceful connection to the Waitematā Harbour. Its design is a contemporary take on the traditional gable house, featuring an asymmetrical form tailored to its function and location. The exterior is defined by a refined material palette, with dark corrugated metal cladding that allows the structure to recede respectfully into the cliff's edge. This is complemented by purpleheart hardwood decking that extends from the structure, creating a seamless transition to the water's edge. The most striking exterior feature is the translucent cladding on the front and rear of the building. When the large doors are open, this cladding evokes the sails of a yacht, while at night, with the doors closed, the boathouse glows like a ship's lantern. Inside, the architecture is designed for both function and beauty within a maritime environment. The walls are lined with Meranti ply, and custom shelving provides integrated storage. The main boat storage area on the ground floor is visually separated from a mezzanine workspace by laminated timber portal frames, a design detail that references typical boat construction. The interior spaces are filled with natural light, particularly when the large doors are open, and the overall feel is one of thoughtful, practical elegance. URBAN | University campus | Petronas University of Technology was founded in 1997 and is the region's largest academic centre for the study of civil, mechanical, chemical and electrical engineering. Fully funded by the Malaysian oil company Petronas, it aims to combine the best academic training with hands-on industrial experience to produce a new generation of graduates who can contribute to the country's industrial development. Located within the lush tropical landscape at Seri Iskandar, 300 kilometres north of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, the 450-hectare site is characterised by steep hills and lakes, which are a legacy of the area's history of tin mining. The design responds to the physical landscape of the site and to the weather patterns particular to this part of the world. While it can be intensely hot in the sun, in the monsoon season the skies open every afternoon to bring torrential rain, creating a cycle in which the ground is alternately scorched and soaked. To allow students to move around the campus freely, while shaded from the sun or protected from downpours, crescent-shaped canopies shelter the pedestrian paths that wind around the site. Held aloft by slender columns, these canopies intersect to encircle a landscaped park. Where possible, the planting and terrain have been preserved in their natural state, or reinstated, although some marshy land has been flooded to form a water installation. Arranged around the edge of the park are buildings for teaching and research, contained in four-storey blocks that tuck beneath the edges of the canopies. Cafés and other communal student facilities are located at the canopy intersections, which also correspond with the entrances to the housing accommodation. Marking the main entrance to the campus is the drum-like form of the resource centre. Containing a library and a multi-purpose auditorium, it is the university's chief social and ceremonial hub. The cabin's form is an organic pentagonal plan with three obtuse corners, giving it a soft, non-intrusive character in the woods. It features a single-pitch roof that reaches a height of 7 meters at the rear, creating a sense of spaciousness within the compact footprint. The wooden skeleton was prefabricated and assembled in just five days, with the clients themselves contributing to the exterior cladding and interior finishes. The exterior is clad with locally sourced, barked larch planks over fiberboard, and the interior uses oriented strand board (OSB) panels. Completed in 2020, the project's primary goal was to create a comfortable, low-impact holiday house that would blend as much as possible into its forest surroundings. The design is defined by its strong ecological principles, using renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable materials in a circular construction process. The house is supported by 11 slender poles, allowing the structure to ""float"" about half a meter above the forest floor, minimizing its physical and visual footprint. This foundation system means the house can be moved in its entirety, with the option to add two extra poles for a terrace. The cabin's form is an organic pentagonal plan with three obtuse corners, giving it a soft, non-intrusive character in the woods. It features a single-pitch roof that reaches a height of 7 meters at the rear, creating a sense of spaciousness within the compact footprint. The wooden skeleton was prefabricated and assembled in just five days, with the clients themselves contributing to the exterior cladding and interior finishes. The exterior is clad with locally sourced, barked larch planks over fiberboard, and the interior uses oriented strand board (OSB) panels. Energy efficiency is a key feature, with the house so well-insulated that a single wood stove is sufficient for heating. An air-source heat pump was also installed to heat sanitary water efficiently. TRANSPORTATION | Marina | Yalıkavak is one of the lagoons on the south western coast of Turkey, which is becoming a popular destination for blue voyages along the Turkish Riviera. Unlike its provincial center Bodrum, which has faced a building boom in 1980s with the increase of touristic activities, Yalikavak is still among relatively calm, silent and untouched bays of the peninsula. The project for the renewal and extension of the existing marina complex, for the use of upper middle class in Yalikavak, has the burden of welcoming a big investment in this particular area, which consequently would also bring its own facilities. The main motivation of the design aimed both to correspond fully to the needs and desire of the new comers and to create a dialogue with the authentic qualities of the place, that would find its belongingness in the built and social aura of Yalikavak. This tendency may briefly be described as “being Mediterranean.” The complex was developed in three stages, constructed in consecutive years. Firstly the so called “island,” that was connected to the mainland by a narrow passageway, to include mainly restaurants, the pool-beach club and some retail units was designed and built. The programme also included sanitary and technical rooms needed for the mega-yachts that will dock at this part of the marina. Instead of a generic design that can easily become an alienated object for this place, an architecture derived from the local character, interpreted as a composition of masses with different heights, merging with the landscape and with the sea has emerged as a way to be integrated with Yalikavak, as a Mediterranean settlement. Alongside the masses that follows a grid structure in plan, atypical additions such as a linear wall and a tower accompanies the complex. Following the ancient cities like Kos, Rhodes and Siena that are fully cladded with a single material, travertine is used to render the whole complex which regards itself as a newcomer, but one of a familiar; not a hard-shell foreigner. This design approach was followed in the consecutive stages this time with wide overhangs creating a continuous shaded path that sometimes turns into a colonnade alongside the public circulation path. These stages are mainly composed of various shopping and recreational units, including a small boutique hotel and some offices. Sanitary, technical and storage rooms of the marina were again dispersed. Various rows of shopping units are united by series of overlapping overhangs on different levels. Above all, the intensive use of the complex by all levels of the society was given priority, which mainly conflicts with worldwide acceptance of such marinas, to be so called “elitist” spaces with limited access. EAA – Emre Arolat Architecture was founded in May 2004 by Emre Arolat and Gonca Paşolar in Istanbul, as the continuation of Emre Arolat’s architectural practices which he started at his parents’ office, Arolat Architects, as an associate designer in 1987. Today EAA is not only one of the largest architectural offices of Turkey, also has a recognized presence in the global scene along its offices in New York and London in addition to Istanbul. Since its establishment, the studio has built an impressively wide range of works from urban masterplans, airports to residential, cultural buildings and workplaces. The practice has received international attention very early with the Minicity Theme Park in 2005 which was recognized as Selected Work by the Mies van der Rohe Awards for European Architecture. A great number of international awards followed including Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2010 with the Ipekyol Textile Factory Building.
