RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | House MM is a renovation project completed in 2020 by the Slovenian firm a2o2 arhitekti in Domžale, Slovenia. The project involved renovating a derelict early 20th-century house to retain its historic character while adapting it for modern living. The architects and owners aimed to present a financially viable and sustainable alternative to new construction, preserving a piece of the neighborhood's "anonymous built heritage". Design and architectural features Balancing old and new: The exterior of the original brick house, including the facades and window openings, was preserved. A new metal roof was installed to replace the original one, which was beyond repair. New, modern interventions were deliberately designed to be distinct from the old structure, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Open and layered interior: The interior was cleared of redundant layers to expose the original structure. A new wooden-clad service core was inserted inside, keeping it separate from the old walls. Vertical spatial sequence: The home is arranged vertically, featuring a kitchen and dining area at ground level. A double-height living space with a fireplace and a large window opens onto the garden, while a new mezzanine bedroom is situated above the kitchen. Materiality: The new additions are clad in timber, contrasting with the old masonry. The ground floor is finished with terrazzo, achieved by polishing the concrete flooring. The owners were actively involved in the renovation. With the help of a restoration specialist, they restored the original windows and helped with the interior paneling and terrazzo flooring. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Half-Tree House, designed by Jacobschang Architecture, is a 360-square-foot, off-grid cabin located on a remote, 60-acre property in a second-growth forest in Sullivan County, upstate New York. Built on a budget of just $20,000, the residence was constructed entirely by its owners and a team of friends in the "New England barn-raising" spirit. The house features a design that minimizes its impact on the steep, wooded site, creating the illusion that it floats among the trees. To achieve this "floating" effect, the structure uses a hybrid anchoring system. The upslope side of the cabin is supported by standard concrete footings, while the other side is suspended from two existing trees using a specialized treehouse fastener system called Garnier Limbs. This approach not only saved money by avoiding expensive foundations and retaining walls but also minimized site disturbance. The aesthetic of the Half-Tree House is characterized by a strong contrast between its exterior and interior. The exterior is clad with timber milled from Eastern Pines that were felled on the property. This wood was then treated with traditional Scandinavian pine tar, giving the cabin a dark, weather-resistant facade that blends into the forest. Inside, the walls and ceiling are painted white, and the floor is sealed with a clear, matte coat, creating a bright and minimalist space. The single-room interior is flooded with natural light and air via three large, 8-by-8-foot steel-tube pivot doors that also feature dual-insulated glass. For the colder New York winters, the space is heated by an efficient Jotul wood stove. The cabin has no piped water or electricity, with power coming from a portable generator if needed, reinforcing its identity as a remote and self-reliant getaway. Located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada, it is the smallest of several cabins on a family-owned property. It is tucked into the treeline on a steep slope, providing a quiet escape from the main, multi-generational family cottages below. The cabin reinterprets the traditional A-frame design with two intersecting, offset gables that create distinct volumes and elevations. This split-roof design, inspired by the layered shale rock formations found in the area, allows for carefully placed window openings that offer curated views of the forest and the lake. The design emphasizes both a strong connection to nature and a commitment to sustainability. The exterior features greyed wood siding and natural cedar soffits, which are intended to patina over time and blend further into the rustic landscape. The foundation consists of board-formed concrete that sits lightly on the existing rock contours, avoiding any need for invasive blasting. Inside, the home is functional despite its compact size, with built-in storage and benches. A variety of FSC-rated wood species line the interior, including oak flooring, maple plywood partitions, and Western red cedar slats for the ceiling, which echo the surrounding forest. The interior perimeter walls are clad in white wallboard. Located on a 10,000-square-meter plot in the wild landscape of southeastern Mexico, the house is a secluded retreat that encourages contemplation and a close connection to its natural surroundings. The structure is a simple and compact two-story volume set on a platform elevated off the ground. TEMPORARY STRUCTURES | Observation Post | Nestled within the Figuerolles national park near Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts, France, the Figuerolles watchtower by OH!SOM architectes is a small wooden cabin designed for a seasonal forest ranger. The project was conceived as a replacement for a series of temporary lookout structures used each summer to protect the Mediterranean forest during the high fire season. The design aims to be simple, efficient, and harmonious with its forest surroundings, providing a comfortable living and working space for the guard. The structure, elevated on steel poles, is a 27-square-meter cabin constructed almost entirely from wood, chosen for its sustainable and local sourcing and its natural integration with the environment. The cabin features two levels, with the upper level serving as the watch post, and the lower level as the living area. Its design is based on two intersecting cubic forms, defined by the wood cladding and large windows that offer panoramic views of the forest. The modular construction was planned for minimal disturbance to the site, allowing for quick assembly. For five months each year, from June to October, the watchtower becomes the forest ranger's home. The design prioritizes the guard's comfort and well-being during this long, solitary period. The compact living space includes a kitchenette and sleeping area, while the elevated watch post provides a secure and optimal vantage point for fire detection.
