RESIDENTIAL | Guesthouse | Completed in 2023, the Garden Guesthouse by KFA arkitekter is a 30-square-meter Attefallshus located just outside Gothenburg, Sweden. This type of small, detached structure is a Swedish typology that does not require a full building permit, allowing homeowners to add additional space for purposes such as guesthouses, home offices, or rental units. Situated at the edge of a residential property, the guesthouse frames the garden between the main house and natural rock formations, creating a secluded and intimate space. The design is a thoughtful blend of Scandinavian minimalism and natural materials. The exterior is clad in untreated heart pine, nailed with dome-headed stainless steel nails, and left to naturally age and blend into its surroundings. The windows are made of oiled oak, and the roof and gutters are zinc, adding a durable and modern touch. RESIDENTIAL | Bunkhouse | Designed by the Miller Hull Partnership, the 400-square-foot Decatur Island Bunkhouse is a minimalist retreat that sits lightly on a sloping, remote site in Washington State's Salish Sea. The project was completed in 2019 next to a cabin originally designed by Miller Hull's late founding partner, Robert Hull, in 1986. Guided by the principles of leaving a minimal footprint, the design elevates the compact volume on six point-load foundations, preserving the natural landscape and allowing its sloping topography to be appreciated. The small size of the bunkhouse was a pragmatic decision driven by the difficulty of building on the remote site. The location is only accessible via a narrow, 500-foot trail through the woods, meaning all materials had to be carried to the site by hand. The team embraced these constraints, allowing them to shape a simple but potent structure. Its timber exoskeleton references the architecture of the neighboring cabin, supporting a simple "sleeve" of interior space arranged to maximize views and privacy. The bunkhouse is a sustainable example of design, with its low carbon footprint being a primary consideration. The extensive use of sustainably harvested and FSC-certified timber, including some from neighboring Blakely Island, helped offset the embodied carbon from other materials like concrete and steel. The passive design includes roof overhangs that control solar heat gain, while operable clerestory windows enable natural ventilation during the summer. Located on the slopes of the Northern Mountains in San Andrés Huayápam, Oaxaca, Mexico, the project was conceived as a tranquil personal refuge for short stays. Positioned on a natural terrace surrounded by trees, the bungalow offers panoramic views of the valley and the city below. The minimalist and low-maintenance design of Bungalow H prioritizes a connection with its stunning natural surroundings. This addition serves as a dynamic entrance and a living area that is oriented to receive maximum southern exposure. With sliding glass walls, the cube blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces and opens up to a new wooden terrace that appears to hover over the hillside, offering expansive views of the Zagorje landscape. The traditional cottage form was preserved, but the architects enhanced its material palette by using locally sourced, rustic materials. The original thatched roof was replaced with a new one that extends down over the façade, and the gables were re-clad with wood. This innovative use of straw, considered an archaic material, creates a warm and earthy exterior that contrasts with the minimalist glass cube. The renovation also preserved the cottage's original stone pedestal, grounding the updated structure in its history. A pathway made of tree stumps leads to the entrance, further connecting the home with its natural surroundings. Inside, the house is organized across three floors: a basement, a ground floor for common living spaces (leisure, dining, and cooking areas), and a first floor for the sleeping areas. The ground floor is arranged around a central ""hearth"" in the traditional Zagorje manner. This approach of reinterpreting traditional construction technologies and using local, renewable resources demonstrates a commitment to sustainable, low-impact design.
