The modern-day retreat was conceived as a surprise gift from a husband to his wife, an art museum patron, art collector, and philanthropist, to serve as a creative studio and lounge space. Perched 12 feet off the ground, the treehouse is situated in a back corner of the property and offers exceptional views of the Getty Center and downtown Los Angeles. The design is a clever interpretation of a childhood treehouse, reflecting the client's affinity for such a retreat while providing an adult environment. The project incorporates a live but fallen pine tree, with the structure hovering above it to suggest a delicate balance between the architecture and nature. A key feature is a glass viewport in the walnut floor, which symbolically connects the structure to the tree below, reminiscent of a classic treehouse hatch. Access is provided by a concrete stair that leads up to an open metal and wood plank stair, a modern interpretation of a treehouse ladder. The unique, angular plan was influenced by the tight site and setback requirements. The interior of the micro-house is equipped with modern amenities, including a toilet, running water, a daybed, and a small refrigerator. The space is wrapped in rich materials, such as walnut paneling and floors, mahogany windows, and ipe-wood ceilings and decks. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany windows and a glass clerestory provide abundant natural light and ventilation while framing views of the canyon and city. The exterior is clad in deep-oiled cedar siding for durability and beauty. A butterfly-shaped metal roof with a Kynar finish seemingly floats above the structure, supported by five angled steel columns. An outdoor shower, sculpted from concrete, is located below the treehouse. Located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada, it is the smallest of several cabins on a family-owned property. It is tucked into the treeline on a steep slope, providing a quiet escape from the main, multi-generational family cottages below. The cabin reinterprets the traditional A-frame design with two intersecting, offset gables that create distinct volumes and elevations. This split-roof design, inspired by the layered shale rock formations found in the area, allows for carefully placed window openings that offer curated views of the forest and the lake. Located on a 10,000-square-meter plot in the wild landscape of southeastern Mexico, the house is a secluded retreat that encourages contemplation and a close connection to its natural surroundings. The structure is a simple and compact two-story volume set on a platform elevated off the ground. This elevation helps protect against undesirable animals and facilitates construction on the site's rocky terrain, which prevented excavation. The home is strategically oriented to work with the region's dominant winds and sun exposure, ensuring a comfortable interior temperature. The exterior and interior are finished with a rough stucco and an artisanal lime-based paint with mineral pigments, giving the building a natural, reddish tone that blends with the surrounding soil. Regional cedar wood is used for the folding doors and operable louvers, allowing residents to control the amount of privacy and connection to the outdoors. A pre-existing tree provides shade for the swimming pool and terrace, an extension of the interior social area. TEMPORARY STRUCTURES | Observation Post | Nestled within the Figuerolles national park near Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts, France, the Figuerolles watchtower by OH!SOM architectes is a small wooden cabin designed for a seasonal forest ranger. The project was conceived as a replacement for a series of temporary lookout structures used each summer to protect the Mediterranean forest during the high fire season. The design aims to be simple, efficient, and harmonious with its forest surroundings, providing a comfortable living and working space for the guard. The structure, elevated on steel poles, is a 27-square-meter cabin constructed almost entirely from wood, chosen for its sustainable and local sourcing and its natural integration with the environment. The cabin features two levels, with the upper level serving as the watch post, and the lower level as the living area. Its design is based on two intersecting cubic forms, defined by the wood cladding and large windows that offer panoramic views of the forest. The modular construction was planned for minimal disturbance to the site, allowing for quick assembly. For five months each year, from June to October, the watchtower becomes the forest ranger's home. The design prioritizes the guard's comfort and well-being during this long, solitary period. The project was conceived as a replacement for a series of temporary lookout structures used each summer to protect the Mediterranean forest during the high fire season. The design aims to be simple, efficient, and harmonious with its forest surroundings, providing a comfortable living and working space for the guard. The structure, elevated on steel poles, is a 27-square-meter cabin constructed almost entirely from wood, chosen for its sustainable and local sourcing and its natural integration with the environment. MASTER PLAN | Housing development | Studio Libeskind’s first project in Albania, the Magnet housing development, consists of a master plan for a new residential neighborhood within walking distance of Tirana’s city center, along with the design for Eagle in Flight, the first 13,000 square meter tower within the master plan to serve as a catalyst for revitalizing the entire district. RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Situated in the northernmost point of Denmark, the Skagen Klitgård House by PAX Architects is a contemporary summer home that pays tribute to the town's architectural history. Designed for a multi-generational family, the 288-square-meter residence strikes a balance between open communal areas and secluded spaces for private retreat. The project was completed in 2021. The house draws inspiration from Skagen's "Black Period," when charred wood from shipwrecks was used to build houses. This history is echoed in the distinctive black-painted wooden exterior and a traditional thatched roof, which help the house blend seamlessly into the surrounding dunes and landscape. Inside, the layout is designed to foster a sense of togetherness while still allowing for solitude. The entire house is covered by a continuous pitched roof, creating a feeling of "being under one roof" regardless of where you are in the house. The heart of the home is a centrally located kitchen that overlooks the dining room, encouraging family gatherings.
