  • Nina Maritz Architects | ZHIG

Architecture Office | Nina Maritz Architects is an architecture firm based in Windhoek, Namibia, founded in March 1998 by Nina Maritz. The firm is known for its strong focus on environmentally sustainable and context-sensitive design, creating buildings that harmonize with Namibia's unique landscapes and harsh climates. Their work emphasizes passive design principles, such as utilizing solar power, natural ventilation, and locally sourced materials like stone, wood, clay bricks, and recycled elements. Maritz advocates for a "less is more" approach to architecture, aiming for efficiency and appeal despite tight budgets and remote sites. She has received recognition, including the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2018, for her work in sustainable design combined with participatory approaches. Her portfolio includes a diverse range of projects from community development to sustainable tourism, such as the Twyfelfontein Visitors' Centre and the Shipwreck Lodge. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_5175967d03934208a32d042b379926b7~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_1772,h_1620,al_c/Nina%20Maritz%20Architects-zhiig.png PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe Nina Maritz Architects Namibia Small Title 1998 Since Architecture Office ---- 1 Project 829 Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info. The lodge is located in the Skeleton Coast National Park, an unforgiving landscape marked by the remains of vessels that have been wrecked by the treacherous Atlantic waters. The lodge's angular, timber cabins are designed to evoke broken fragments of these lost ships, creating a sense of desolation and remoteness while offering a comfortable and highly sustainable guest experience. The cabins are part of a larger concession that includes staff accommodation and back-of-house facilities housed in repurposed shipping containers. Each of the ten guest cabins is constructed from pre-manufactured panels in Namibia's capital, Windhoek, and assembled on-site to minimize environmental disturbance. The timber-framed structures are designed to resist the harsh coastal conditions and are nailed with an innovative timber nailing system to minimize the use of rust-prone metal. The entire lodge can also be dismantled and removed without leaving a trace at the end of its 25-year concession. The two-part design of each cabin features a bedroom with a pitched roof and a large window offering panoramic views, which is connected to a pointed, ""bow-like"" bathroom structure. Interiors, designed by Melanie van der Merwe of Women Unleashed, feature a cozy wood-burning stove and a material palette that includes recycled plastic bottle insulation, reclaimed timbers, and organic textiles. A central lodge, echoing the aesthetic of the cabins, houses the restaurant and lounge, providing a communal space with large windows and an outdoor deck to take in the dramatic views. The lodge is entirely solar-powered, with electrical systems designed for maximum efficiency using timer and motion-sensor switches. Water is sourced from a borehole and conserved with efficiency measures, and sewage is treated on-site. The lodge's low-impact design, use of sustainable materials, and commitment to conservation led to it being named ""Best Safari Lodge"" by Jetsetter in 2019. Architecture Office | Pankowska & Rohrhofer is a Zürich-based architecture studio, established by Kasia Pankowska and Manuel Rohrhofer. The studio is known for its contextual designs that explore the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, particularly on a small scale. While based in Switzerland, they have gained recognition for a holiday retreat project in Wolin, on Poland's Baltic Sea coast, called "House Wolin," which was completed in 2023. This project, which references the regional "Brda" houses from Poland's communist era, showcases their focus on materials, form, and the integration of architecture with the natural landscape. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_d1f9cbd2a3eb43379857b13a729bf713~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_1000,h_1001,al_c/Pankowska%20%26%20Rohrhofer-zhiig.png PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe Pankowska & Rohrhofer Switzerland Small Title 2023 Since Architecture Office ---- 1 Project 1.3K Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info. Completed in 2016 by bark arkitekter, the project breathed new life into a 50-year-old cottage, originally designed in 1961 by architect Atle Sørby. The renovation successfully balanced the building's historical integrity with the functional demands of modern living. The house sits on a relatively flat plot surrounded by the distinctive landscape of the region, featuring long sloping fields, beaches, and dunes separated by old drystone walls. Its proximity to the shoreline places it within a landscape-preservation area, which meant the architects worked closely with local authorities during the building process. The architectural approach involved respecting the original design while modernizing the interior and expanding the living space. The cottage's original pitched roof with pulled-down gables, a reinterpretation of the traditional "Jærhus" typology, was preserved. This design is crucial for withstanding the harsh local weather conditions. To maintain this connection to the past, local craftsmen carefully removed, stored, and re-laid the original roof tiles, which were sourced from local brick factories. The renovation involved a strategic reorganization of the interior space. The walls and ceiling of the main volume were opened up to create a single large, open-plan common area. This space now accommodates the living, dining, and kitchen functions, creating a bright and expansive atmosphere. A new 88 m² annex was constructed to house private functions. This addition includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and a storage room, allowing for a clearer separation of public and private zones within the home. Large glass windows were installed to maximize natural light and offer the homeowners uninterrupted views of the surrounding coastal scenery. The interior features a minimalist, no-frills aesthetic, with a neutral color palette and light timber finishes creating a calm and functional living space. The architects focused on simple, high-quality materials to complement the building's modest scale. Completed in 2019, the cabin was conceived by hospitality entrepreneur Bartłomiej Kraciuk and his wife, architect Marta Puchalska-Kraciuk, as a secluded escape for unplugging and focusing on reading. Marta Puchalska-Kraciuk adapted an existing concept from the Polish firm POLE Architekci and personalized it to create a haven for bibliophiles. Inspired by the surrounding forest and nearby sand dunes, the couple designed a space that encourages a deep connection with both literature and nature. The cabin's design prioritizes immersion in its surroundings. The asymmetrical structure, featuring a dramatic sloping roofline, is clad in pine and spruce to help it blend seamlessly into the wooded plot. A focal point of the design is the 16-foot-high, floor-to-ceiling windows on the front facade, which provide a dramatic view of the forest and flood the interior with natural light. Inside, the cabin functions as a personal library, with timber walls lined with bookshelves that hold hundreds of volumes. The interior features a neutral, cozy aesthetic with a wood-burning stove and comfortable seating. A spruce deck outside extends the living area into the woods. The small cabin makes efficient use of its space, with a 25-square-meter main level and a 10-square-meter sleeping loft. The ground floor includes a small kitchen and a living area, while a full bathroom is tucked beneath the stairs. To enforce a distraction-free environment, the cabin is intentionally without Wi-Fi, and cell reception is unreliable. For those tempted to use their devices, a small yellow box is provided for storing phones out of sight. Credits Designers: Bartłomiej Kraciuk and Marta Puchalska-Kraciuk, POLE Architekci.
