RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2014, the Lake Cabin by Prague-based FAM Architekti is a 43-square-meter minimalist retreat situated on the sandy banks of Lake Mácha in the Czech Republic. Designed to replace a dilapidated 1970s cabin, the project was intended as a year-round getaway for a yachting enthusiast, creating a space that visually connects with the surrounding lake and dense pine forest. Its simple, wedge-shaped volume and slatted timber facade draw inspiration from sailing, giving the cabin a sculptural quality. The cabin was constructed using prefabricated techniques to minimize its environmental impact and reduce building time. The entire timber framework and larch cladding were prepared off-site and then assembled on the lakefront in just a week and a half. The structure is also raised slightly off the ground on steel screws, ensuring minimal disturbance to the landscape. When the cabin is not in use, folding and fixed shutters, clad in the same larch as the rest of the exterior, protect the large glazed openings, creating a continuous and secure facade. The interior is designed as one continuous space with a high, open ceiling, reminiscent of a cave or a boat's cabin. The main entrance is a large sliding window, which, along with the other glass elements, emphasizes the connection to nature. The tall end of the cabin features a compact black box containing a minimal kitchen, toilet, and shower. Above this is a sleeping gallery, accessible via a ladder. Designed for a self-builder couple, the 1,296-square-foot cabin (36x36 feet) combines ecological architecture, universal accessibility, and a resort-like experience into a single, cohesive design. The structure is defined by its striking, all-white exterior, which evokes the tranquil, restful properties of the selenite mineral. The architects created this effect with white-painted wooden planks and matching metal roof panels. The geometry of the roof, designed as two inverted crystal-like prisms, gives the structure its unique, modern form while referencing the mineral's crystalline nature. Square skylights punctuate the peaks of these roofs, flooding the interior with natural light and emphasizing the home's sense of balance and symmetry. In addition to its aesthetic vision, the project prioritized universal accessibility to ensure the space is functional and safe for as many users as possible, addressing a common limitation in vacation properties. The interior is a haven of wellness, featuring amenities like a steam bath, sauna, cold bath, and a salt room. A home automation system controls lighting synchronized to the circadian rhythm and can even launch guided meditation sessions. Designed for a self-builder couple, the 1,296-square-foot cabin (36x36 feet) combines ecological architecture, universal accessibility, and a resort-like experience into a single, cohesive design. The structure is defined by its striking, all-white exterior, which evokes the tranquil, restful properties of the selenite mineral. The architects created this effect with white-painted wooden planks and matching metal roof panels. The geometry of the roof, designed as two inverted crystal-like prisms, gives the structure its unique, modern form while referencing the mineral's crystalline nature. Square skylights punctuate the peaks of these roofs, flooding the interior with natural light and emphasizing the home's sense of balance and symmetry. In addition to its aesthetic vision, the project prioritized universal accessibility to ensure the space is functional and safe for as many users as possible, addressing a common limitation in vacation properties. The interior is a haven of wellness, featuring amenities like a steam bath, sauna, cold bath, and a salt room. A home automation system controls lighting synchronized to the circadian rhythm and can even launch guided meditation sessions. The monochromatic white palette and high ceilings in key areas, such as the living room and bathroom, amplify the peaceful and restful atmosphere. Sustainability was a key consideration in the build, with the clients opting for healthy, local materials like hemp wool for insulation. To enhance the sense of seclusion and wellness, a Faraday cage was installed to block electromagnetic waves, catering to those with electro-sensitivity. RESIDENTIAL | Conversion | Completed in 2020, the Transformation House by Lautenbag Architectuur and De Stadsmeubelmaker is the conversion of a 1920s-era expressionist transformer house into a contemporary 25-square-meter hiker's cabin. Located just south of Wirdum in the Netherlands, the building had been empty for over 30 years and was scheduled for demolition before the current owner, Ronald van der Zwaag, conceived the idea for its transformation. The project sought to preserve the unique Dutch cultural heritage of the building while adapting it for modern use, offering a secluded retreat with views of the spectacular surrounding landscape. The architects expanded the small internal floor plan by adding three prefabricated steel bay windows to newly created openings. These bay windows, featuring cross-laminated timber on steel beams, use contrasting materials and detailing to both respect and enhance the existing expressionist structure with contemporary elements. The ends of the bay windows are filled with insulated glass, framing the landscape like paintings, while their sides are covered with galvanized steel panels with slats. The slats were designed to reference the cooling fins of a transformer and direct rainwater to the earth below. Inside, the interior is a unified wooden structure, functioning as a single large piece of furniture with clean, contemporary details. The original tiled floor was preserved, and light-colored materials were used to enhance the sense of space. The original chimney was repurposed with a glass cover to function as a skylight, and ventilation was integrated into the steel slats of the bay windows. The result is a hiker's hut that was saved from demolition and given new life for another century. Completed in 2019, the project is situated on a slope with views towards Cerro Piltriquitron. The architecture is adapted to the natural incline of the terrain, allowing the house to step down in a way that maximizes the panoramic vista. The cabin's design emphasizes efficiency and sustainability. A 2-foot by 2-foot grid system was used to modularize the construction, which reduced material waste and enabled a quicker build time. A substantial northern overhang was incorporated to passively protect the interior from the sun, while cross-ventilation provides a natural cooling mechanism. For the interior, full sheets of pine plywood were used to create a cozy, cabin-like feel, showcasing the modularity of the construction. The exterior material choices included charred wood, utilizing the Shou Sugi Ban technique on the north and south walls for weather protection, and black corrugated metal for the roof, east, and west walls. RESIDENTIAL | ADU | The Offset ADU is a 933-square-foot back house designed by Los Angeles-based architecture firm Byben, led by Ben Warwas. Completed in 2024, the project is a dramatic conversion of a one-car garage in the Mar Vista neighborhood. Rather than expand the main house for their growing family, the clients opted for an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to add a media room and an extra bedroom/office, revitalizing their entire backyard in the process. The project's most striking feature, its "offset" second story, is a creative solution to site-specific challenges. The upper level is shifted a few feet from the ground floor to accommodate overhead power lines and adhere to zoning regulations, which was used to the project's advantage. This strategic offset gives the building its unique, dynamic profile while also creating a covered front entrance and a roof deck on the second level. The sculptural form and playful geometry make the interior feel much larger than its 890 square feet, according to architect Ben Warwas. The exterior features a contrast of materials, with the two facades visible from the property clad in a striking ipe rainscreen siding, while the other sides are finished with smooth stucco. WORKSPACE | Multi-Functional Space | The Long Studio is a standalone, multi-functional outbuilding located on the midcoast of Maine, home to Acadia National Park. Designed by Eric W. Reinholdt of 30by40 Design Workshop, the studio acts as a "lens for the seasons," framing the changing local environment and serving as a testing ground for architectural ideas. It is a modern, craft-driven space that combines aesthetic purpose with practical function, reflecting Reinholdt's residential architecture philosophy. The studio was created to be both a functional workspace and a piece of educational architecture. Observatory for nature: The structure was conceived as a "stage set" to observe the seasonal changes of the Maine landscape. Its large and small apertures control views, bringing the surroundings into the studio and allowing the interior to become a canvas for light, weather, and wind patterns. Serving as a "teaching tool" and "learning lab," the studio allows Reinholdt to experiment with materials and details. This process informs and educates clients on the design process. The design is an homage to simple, agrarian building forms and vernacular structures like tobacco barns, but executed with modern detailing and a clean aesthetic. The form is both familiar and contemporary, fitting harmoniously into the rugged Maine setting.
