  • Zen House | JAN TYRPEKL | ZHIG

    RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Zen House is a tiny, 33-square-meter elevated cabin designed by architect Jan Tyrpekl for a farm complex in Hainburg an der Donau, Austria. Completed in 2023, the cabin was commissioned to provide a unique and serene retreat for relaxation, offering a deep connection with the surrounding nature, which includes an orchard and mature trees. The dwelling is perched on 4-meter-high concrete stilts, allowing the landscape to flow unimpeded beneath and creating a feeling of being in a "bird's nest," which offers a sense of security and intimacy. The structure is built from sustainable materials, featuring a frame of glued laminated spruce timbers and a platform and roof of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. The lower part of the structure and the terrace are made from glued laminated larch timbers. The most prominent feature of the design is the extensive use of glass walls, which enclose the entire living space to provide uninterrupted, 360-degree views of the natural surroundings. For privacy, interior curtains can be drawn. The open-plan interior is designed for simplicity and comfort. It includes a built-in bed, a connected bar/kitchenette, and a suspended fireplace that creates a cozy, warm atmosphere. The space is divided into distinct zones for sleeping, sitting, and conversing. Large HS portals—sliding doors—provide access to a spacious terrace overlooking the farm's orchard. While the current cabin lacks a bathroom and cooking facilities, plans are in place for a future expansion that will add a sauna, shower, and toilet in the space between the supporting pillars beneath the house. The 12.5-square-meter cabin is situated on top of a disused World War II concrete bunker near the border of the Czech Republic and Austria. This was part of an architectural statement to repurpose the thousands of bunkers left in the landscape after they were never used for their intended purpose. By designing a light, removable wooden structure, Tyrpekl aimed to minimize the impact on the existing historical structure. The project was executed with minimal material, cost, and time. It was built with the help of friends, family, and architecture students, rather than being funded by donations or grants. Because of logistical challenges, the cabin was first assembled at a family farm 200 kilometers away, then disassembled and reassembled on the bunker. The design demonstrates that a generous interior space can be created within a very small footprint. The building features two large windows—one facing the Austrian border and the other facing a nearby village church—and an additional rooftop window, ensuring the small space is filled with natural light and scenic views. The simple wooden design was constructed using only common tools. The Shelter serves as a small retreat, and anyone can arrange to stay there with the owner's permission.     RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Situated in the northernmost point of Denmark, the Skagen Klitgård House by PAX Architects is a contemporary summer home that pays tribute to the town's architectural history. Designed for a multi-generational family, the 288-square-meter residence strikes a balance between open communal areas and secluded spaces for private retreat. The project was completed in 2021. The house draws inspiration from Skagen's "Black Period," when charred wood from shipwrecks was used to build houses. This history is echoed in the distinctive black-painted wooden exterior and a traditional thatched roof, which help the house blend seamlessly into the surrounding dunes and landscape. Inside, the layout is designed to foster a sense of togetherness while still allowing for solitude. The entire house is covered by a continuous pitched roof, creating a feeling of "being under one roof" regardless of where you are in the house. The heart of the home is a centrally located kitchen that overlooks the dining room, encouraging family gatherings. In contrast, more intimate spaces, such as a multi-purpose room behind the kitchen, have lower ceiling heights to create a more personal atmosphere. Completed in 2020, the compact, 25-square-meter cabin was constructed around a large, century-old chestnut tree, which served as the central inspiration for the project. To accommodate the tree, the cabin's geometry was modified and one side was angled inward, with large windows framing the tree's trunk and canopy. This unique design allows the building to exist in symbiosis with nature, with the house's life, textures, and colors reflecting the changes in seasons and weather. The project's philosophy was to create a "shelter" that was as unintrusive as possible, molding itself to the natural landscape rather than impacting it. The house is built on an elevated modular structure to avoid disturbing the tree's roots. The entire structure was built with certified pine wood, coated both inside and out with oriented strand boards (OSB). For insulation, layers of corkboard were applied, a sustainable material with a negative carbon footprint. The exterior is clad in thermo-modified wood and painted black to blend with the surroundings, while the interior features birch plywood on the walls, ceiling, and built-in furniture. The interior of the Chestnut House is a single, open-plan space, accommodating a living area, kitchen, and sleeping space, along with a small mezzanine for an extra bed. Full-height windows connect the interior with the surrounding woodland, and a wooden deck and a fireplace further blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. On the ground floor, the social areas—a small kitchen, dining area, and living space—enjoy a direct connection with the surrounding outdoor areas. A weathering steel (corten) staircase, which also incorporates storage, divides the two floors and adds a striking modern contrast to the old stone walls. The upstairs contains a bedroom and bathroom, offering privacy and scenic views of the landscape. Throughout the interior, a minimalist aesthetic and light colors are used to create a sense of spaciousness and openness, maximizing the perception of the compact volume. Completed in 2018, the residence was originally the caretaker's house for the main building and is tucked away from the street and urban life. The renovation reconfigured the tiny, 30-square-meter space to create a contemporary living area that prioritizes the internal connections between rooms and a sense of openness within the compact volume. Inspired by the isolated location, the architects treated the small building as an autonomous object. On the ground floor, the kitchen, a side balcony, and the stairs were strategically moved to the outer walls, which freed up the central space for a small dining area. Upstairs, the bedroom was elevated on a custom-designed platform, creating valuable storage space underneath. This clever use of vertical space helps to maximize the cabin's limited footprint. The interior palette is a creative mix of old and new materials. The architects chose to keep the original black-and-white tiled flooring on the ground floor despite its worn look, lending character and a sense of history. This is contrasted with modern interventions, such as powder-blue kitchen cabinets and white subway tiles in a herringbone pattern. The compact, vertical design was intended to foster intimacy and connection, both with each other and with the surrounding forests of central Vermont. This wheeled foundation elevates the huts a short distance above the meadow, allowing native grasses to grow underneath and minimizing the human footprint on the sensitive environment. The 200-square-foot cabins, completed in 2008, are essentially minimalist, steel-clad boxes on a steel and wood platform. Large, double-paned sliding glass doors at one end of each hut open onto a covered deck, extending the usable space into the outdoors. Inside, the material palette is simple, raw, and inexpensive, featuring cork and plywood left as natural as possible. A lopsided, inverted V-shaped roof with clerestory windows floats above the walls, bringing ample natural light into the compact interior. The 750-square-foot cabin was designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig for a family that has owned land in the area for generations. The compact, vertical design was intended to foster intimacy and connection, both with each other and with the surrounding forests of central Vermont. The cabin’s material palette is an elemental mix of steel, wood, and concrete, chosen to reflect the character of the wilderness. The exterior features panels of weathering steel, while the interior showcases exposed timber and poured concrete. This rugged, utilitarian aesthetic is balanced by the warmth of natural materials and strategic use of glazing. The layout places the main living spaces on the top floor to maximize views of the surrounding landscape, including the Green Mountains and Worcester Range. Large windows open up the living area, allowing residents to feel a sense of being among the trees. The vertical arrangement of the cabin’s 2,250 square feet is divided across three levels connected by a maple and steel staircase. Conceived as a modern and low-impact alternative to camping, the huts were designed for a client who wanted to provide guest accommodations on the site of a former RV campground while allowing the landscape to return to its natural state. The cabins sit on oversized steel wheels, a creative solution to local zoning regulations that prohibited permanent structures but permitted RVs. This wheeled foundation elevates the huts a short distance above the meadow, allowing native grasses to grow underneath and minimizing the human footprint on the sensitive environment. The 200-square-foot cabins, completed in 2008, are essentially minimalist, steel-clad boxes on a steel and wood platform. Large, double-paned sliding glass doors at one end of each hut open onto a covered deck, extending the usable space into the outdoors. Inside, the material palette is simple, raw, and inexpensive, featuring cork and plywood left as natural as possible. A lopsided, inverted V-shaped roof with clerestory windows floats above the walls, bringing ample natural light into the compact interior. While the cabins offer a warm, sheltered, and low-tech space, showers and other communal facilities are located in a central barn, reinforcing the project's connection to camping.     RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Knapphullet is a small annex to a family holiday home located in Sandefjord in Norway. It is only 30 square meters, but contains an open living space with a bathroom and a mezzanine bed that sleeps two people. Although the building occupies such a small footprint, the space expands vertically over four levels including a roof terrace. The house nestles between large rocks surrounded by low vegetation, a typical example of Norwegian coastal landscape. The project started with the challenge of how to utilize this naturally sheltered area surrounded by large rocks and dense vegetation. The idea developed into providing a way to climb up from this shelter to see the panoramic view over the sea. An idea that ultimately led to the characteristic shape of the roof; a stepped ramp leading up from the terrain to the top of the roof and connecting to the landscape beyond. Exploring the detailed execution of each materials expands a seemingly restricted material palette. The roof is executed in 270mm thick reinforced concrete with 20mm VIP insulation underneath. The concrete itself is water resistant, thus no additional roofing materials are required. The interior walls are solid 50/50mm oak layered with a natural sawn texture, while the acoustic ceiling is covered with woven oak strips. A long bench is made with the same white concrete as the roof. Designed by RX Architects, the cabin is approached on foot via a woodland trail, as it is not accessible by vehicles. The project reflects a ""sense of place,"" using natural materials to create a strong visual connection between the structure and its rural environment. The 35-square-meter cabin is designed with an exposed timber frame and features two full glazed elevations that angle out toward the water. These sliding glass walls open up to a cantilevered deck that hovers over the water, providing seamless access for activities like swimming and kayaking. The building is clad in a mix of rough-sawn and planed English oak planks, which are left unfinished to weather naturally over time and integrate further with the landscape. A concrete base acts as a datum line, stepping up to form a bench and log store. The roof and its trims are clad in a contrasting patinated bronze finish. Inside, the cabin features a restrained, open-plan layout with a garden room, kitchen, and a wet room on the main level. Wide-format Douglas Fir boards line the interior walls, adding to the cabin's natural, rustic feel. A mezzanine level provides a sleeping area.
