TEMPORARY STRUCTURES | Observation Post | Nestled within the Figuerolles national park near Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts, France, the Figuerolles watchtower by OH!SOM architectes is a small wooden cabin designed for a seasonal forest ranger. The project was conceived as a replacement for a series of temporary lookout structures used each summer to protect the Mediterranean forest during the high fire season. The design aims to be simple, efficient, and harmonious with its forest surroundings, providing a comfortable living and working space for the guard. The structure, elevated on steel poles, is a 27-square-meter cabin constructed almost entirely from wood, chosen for its sustainable and local sourcing and its natural integration with the environment. The cabin features two levels, with the upper level serving as the watch post, and the lower level as the living area. Its design is based on two intersecting cubic forms, defined by the wood cladding and large windows that offer panoramic views of the forest. The modular construction was planned for minimal disturbance to the site, allowing for quick assembly. For five months each year, from June to October, the watchtower becomes the forest ranger's home. The design prioritizes the guard's comfort and well-being during this long, solitary period. RESIDENTIAL | Extension | Located in Somers, on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, the Somers Boat Shed is a reimagined 1950s structure designed by Wellard Architects as a treasured extension of the adjacent Somers Beach House. The original asbestos-clad boat shed was dilapidated, so the architects carefully replaced and remodeled it, preserving the original footprint and floor levels while incorporating modern amenities. The project is a key feature of the larger Somers Beach House, which was designed to accommodate an intergenerational family. The boat shed serves as a retreat-like space with a strong connection to the surrounding beachfront. Its design mirrors that of the main house, but on a miniature scale. It is defined by a material palette that includes Blackbutt timber, concrete, and stone. The interior and exterior spaces are designed to invite the surrounding environment inward, offering occupants a place to relax while looking out over the ocean. The path from the house leads directly to the boat shed and beach, creating a seamless connection between the different parts of the property. RESIDENTIAL | House | REPII represents the second part of a project carried out by the Office years ago. On this occasion, the concept of the project consisted of expanding the capacity to receive family or visitors. The word enlargement often assumes a meaning of expanding on the built, expanding a space "stretching" existing limits to conceive new spaces. For us, these new spaces should be conceived as spaces disconnected from the main house, allowing guests to enjoy privacy in intimate moments and thus make the most of contact with nature. The construction of projects in remote sites or with limited access, often affect the natural state of the site, providing materials, control over the work done, among other things. The modular prefabricated construction helps to mitigate these factors, the house is built in a closed environment, away from climatic factors, close to all types of material supply and (usually) near the office or the client and then sent (by truck) to its final resting place semi permanent. Site whose intervention was minimal, where its natural state was minimally altered and thus maintain its natural essence. A grateful landscape. Each module is developed in 518 sq ft. (48 m2) It was designed to house, a single person, a couple or couples, families, friends, cousins, in short, flexible to any inhabitant. The interior is subdivided into 3 defined spaces, but without doors that separate them, allowing to break with a traditional concept of delimiting the interiors and thus emphasize the connection between people. The spaces are defined by two bedrooms, a living room or intermediate space, a kitchenette and a bathroom. The interior measurements were defined by the width of the planks whose lines coincide in all the vertical and horizontal planes of the house. Obtaining a minimum waste of the planks, almost without cuts or adjustments and a homogeneous view of the space. The view towards the landscape, fixed windows that allow a maximum vision with minimum restriction. The perspective causes that when one moves through the interior, it seems to be floating from the ground, without touching it, without getting wet and alien to the cold or the heat. An extreme feeling of Refuge. Refuge + Landscape = Refuge in the Landscape. The North façade, exposed to the sun of the Southern hemisphere, has a series of shutters, almost invisible when closed, which allow controlling the entry of solar light in summer and make the most of it in winter, as well as allowing the sector to be more exposed to establishment. RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | The Studio-Garage, an initiative by Indrė Mylytė-Sinkevičienė of IM Interior, is a 21-square-meter micro-home created by renovating a derelict garage in the medieval old town of Vilnius, Lithuania. RESIDENTIAL | Retreat | Tucked away in a serene forest in Quebec's Eastern Townships, Habitat Sélénite by Naturehumaine is a compact, wellness-focused retreat that draws inspiration from the crystalline mineral of the same name. Designed for a self-builder couple, the 1,296-square-foot cabin (36x36 feet) combines ecological architecture, universal accessibility, and a resort-like experience into a single, cohesive design. The structure is defined by its striking, all-white exterior, which evokes the tranquil, restful properties of the selenite mineral. The architects created this effect with white-painted wooden planks and matching metal roof panels. The geometry of the roof, designed as two inverted crystal-like prisms, gives the structure its unique, modern form while referencing the mineral's crystalline nature. Square skylights punctuate the peaks of these roofs, flooding the interior with natural light and emphasizing the home's sense of balance and symmetry. In addition to its aesthetic vision, the project prioritized universal accessibility to ensure the space is functional and safe for as many users as possible, addressing a common limitation in vacation properties. The interior is a haven of wellness, featuring amenities like a steam bath, sauna, cold bath, and a salt room. A home automation system controls lighting synchronized to the circadian rhythm and can even launch guided meditation sessions. The monochromatic white palette and high ceilings in key areas, such as the living room and bathroom, amplify the peaceful and restful atmosphere. Sustainability was a key consideration in the build, with the clients opting for healthy, local materials like hemp wool for insulation. To enhance the sense of seclusion and wellness, a Faraday cage was installed to block electromagnetic waves, catering to those with electro-sensitivity. Sustainability was a key consideration in the build, with the clients opting for healthy, local materials like hemp wool for insulation. To enhance the sense of seclusion and wellness, a Faraday cage was installed to block electromagnetic waves, catering to those with electro-sensitivity. COMMERCIAL | Office building | The practice’s first office building in Russia, the RCC Headquarters in Ekaterinburg reimagines the conventional cellular office to set new standards in quality, comfort and flexibility. The 15-storey building’s innovative modular office units are enveloped in an energy efficient enclosure, which provides a distinctive symbol for the organisation. RCC is one of the world’s leading producers of copper and the triangulated form draws inspiration from the chemical structure of copper. The crown of the building integrates RCC’s new logo – a rebranding which has, in turn, been inspired by the architecture. The starting point for the office floors was to reinvent the headquarters as a ‘house for staff’ – instead of the conventional large, communal workspaces, the rooms are of a more intimate, domestic scale. The practice’s workplace consultancy group analysed the client’s operations and helped to devise the innovative modular system for these rooms. This was then developed with the in-house engineering teams to enable rapid construction and ensure ideal levels of natural daylight for concentrated work. Each two-storey module comprises a pair of offices, stacked one on top of the other – this is expressed externally through the double-storey cladding module. The modules are arranged in rows on either side of a central hallway, which functions as a breakout space, with lounge seating and views of the city through the glazed lift shaft. At level fifteen, the space is top-lit to create a flexible space for company-wide gatherings and events. The design targets a BREEAM Excellent rating. Responding to Ekaterinburg’s wide temperature range between seasons – often from +30C to -30C – the balance between solid and glazed areas is designed as a reaction to low level winter sun, while mitigating the heat of direct sunlight during the summer. The site overlooks the city and the recently landscaped riverbank. Extending this greenery to the base of the building, the footprint is shifted to create a private garden for staff. The landscaping echoes the cellular internal arrangement, with a sequence of ‘external rooms’ that provide peaceful spaces for staff to relax and eat lunch.
