RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Cabin on a Rock, designed by Boston-based I-Kanda Architects, is a 900-square-foot weekend residence perched on a dramatic granite outcropping in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The project was completed in 2017 for the founder of Q-Drinks and his family. What began as a plan for a rustic getaway for two evolved during the design process to accommodate a family of four, necessitating an expanded footprint while still working with the limited area of accessible rock. The design embraces the site's challenging topography rather than trying to flatten it. The angular, faceted form of the cabin is lifted off the ground by nine hand-poured concrete footings, a system chosen to minimize the structure's impact on the sloped site and surrounding tree roots. The house is a compelling marriage of modern design and prefabrication technology, which enabled the construction on the remote and rugged site to be completed more efficiently. The prefabricated timber frame components were engineered and CNC-cut off-site by Bensonwood and delivered ready for assembly, which reduced construction time and site disturbance. The cabin's exterior combines matte black metal siding and contrasting timber, with the geometric form creating a structure that appears to transform depending on the viewer's vantage point. A cantilevered timber porch extends dramatically over the rock's ledge, framing stunning views across the valley below. Large sections of full-height glazing, including a 24-foot-wide sliding glass window wall, maximize natural light and offer expansive views of the surrounding forest and mountains. The interior features a minimal aesthetic, designed to feel like one large, connected space. In 2018, the Cabin on a Rock received a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. Credits Architecture Firm: I-Kanda Architects, with Isamu Kanda as the Design Principal. Structural Engineer: Fire Tower Engineered Timber. Contractors: Nest Woodworking and Latulippe Carpentry handled general contracting. Prefabricated Framing: Bensonwood provided the prefabricated framing elements. • Silver Residence | Studio Nocturne | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | A Family and a Meadow The Silver Residence is a mountain retreat from the city for an extended family. The unique landscape inspired our approach to design. The home is located in the western foothills of the North Cascades, known for its rainy temperate forests. This site presented us with an unexpected opportunity, as if carved out of the surrounding evergreens and ferns, a meadow dotted with mature Big Leaf Maple trees. Standing in the heart of the meadow, it felt like we had left the present and stepped into a fairytale or pastoral scene from the past. The only thing missing from this picture was a home and people to populate the scene. Picturing a Home in the Landscape We wanted the home to be as if it were a repurposed ruin that one had stumbled upon. We turned to tools from the English Picturesque to situate the house in the landscape so that it could participate in one’s experience of the meadow as a character in the scene. The home itself was designed as an arrangement of different buildings, with each serving separate functions. The home’s communal spaces are located in the large wooden building reminiscent of nearby wooden barns. The more private functions of the house are located in more contemporary corrugated volumes, situated as additions toward the forest. These two halves of the home are mediated by a white wall that runs the length of the building, structuring space and contributing to the composition like a three-dimensional canvas. Designed by Berrel Berrel Kräutler Architekten, the 172-square-meter home was completed in 2016 and is perched on a southwestern slope with views over the Alsatian countryside. The architectural design is based on a contrast between a simple, unassuming exterior and a dynamic, sculptural interior. The cubature of the detached house adheres to local building code specifications, featuring a gabled roof that is reinterpreted in a contemporary way. The material palette is designed to weather naturally over time, with the roof and shorter facades clad in a copper-titanium-zinc alloy, and the long sides finished with rhythmic wooden slats. To maximize the use of the sloped plot, the interior is divided into four distinct split levels that flow into one another. This creates an open, loft-like experience despite the modest footprint of the house. A key feature of the interior is a suspended wooden shell that contains the two upper floors and houses the bedroom, study, and bathroom. This creates a double-height central space below, which serves as the heart of the home. Throughout the interior, precise carpentry work creates seamless connections between spaces. Storage units and minimalist stairs are integrated flush into walls and surfaces, creating an abstract and uncluttered living environment. The prefabricated timber frame and other materials were chosen for their durability and how they would respond to the environment over time. The ground floor includes the entrance, kitchen, dining area, and living room, which are connected visually and spatially. The two upper levels in the suspended wooden shell contain the private quarters, and the lower cellar and storage rooms are tucked into the slope. Narrow skylight slits in the roof and along the integrated shell, combined with a large window in the double-height space, flood the interior with natural light. The house is situated in a large courtyard featuring historic Russian-style eclectic buildings, with the architects aiming to create a contemporary solution that respects this historic context. Originally a small security guard's bungalow measuring only 28.77 square meters, the structure had been expanded over time to serve as a family home. The main challenge for the architects was to satisfy the living needs of a family of three within the limited space while ensuring the renovated structure maintained a respectful dialogue with the surrounding protected buildings. Instead of simply replicating the historical Russian style, the design sought to strike a balance between modern living requirements and the historic neighborhood. To contend with Harbin's famously cold climate, a new foundation was dug two meters below ground to avoid damage from frost expansion in the frozen soil. The project was completed in 2017.
