Architecture Office | Our team of eight creates buildings that are beautiful, often simple, and sit at ease with the land. The creative nature and challenge of the design are all-important, crafting buildings unique to each individual client. As registered architects, we enjoy working with clients who are interested in architecture and who want to engage in the design process. This relationship is integral to the outcome and is based on clarity and trust. The essential elements of design are texture and space. We select raw materials that invite the patina of age, giving character and warmth to a home or workplace. The created spaces – inside and out – must evoke a response, be it inspiration or simply a sense of warmth or well-being. Site is paramount. Rather than making an architectural statement, we prefer to respond to the land, creating timeless and authentic buildings to be enjoyed now and well into the future. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_e6183eb4ce984dcf808467a6ceab525b~mv2.png PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe Anna-Marie Chin Architects New Zealand Small Title Since Architecture Office ---- 1 Project 920 Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info. The house was conceived as part one of a two-stage plan, and its design takes cues from the region's rural vernacular while providing a contemporary and dynamic living space. Drawing inspiration from a traditional rural shed, the architects utilized a simple, dark Colorsteel skin that wraps over the walls and roof of the building. The modest structure is given a modern twist through a highly sculptural Exterior: The simple shed form is reinterpreted with a gable roof running diagonally across the building, creating dynamic elevations that echo the surrounding mountain landscape. The asymmetrical ridgeline follows the contour of the land and provides variation in the internal ceiling heights. Dark, recessive tones were chosen for the walls, roof, and window frames to help the home nestle discreetly into its impressive natural environment. Interior: In contrast to the robust, protective exterior, the interior offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. Recessed areas, such as the porches and entry, are lined with honey-colored plywood, extending the interior outwards and creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection. The same warm-toned plywood lines the interior walls and ceilings, creating a sense of enclosure and coziness. Space optimization: The 156-square-meter home is designed for efficiency and flexibility. Its layout features numerous cleverly designed niches and hidden storage areas, including a mezzanine study accessed by a ladder above the dining area. Polished concrete floors provide a resilient base and help absorb warmth. Awards and recognition Despite its modest size and budget, the sophisticated design of Tom's House has been recognized with multiple awards: 2016 Home of the Year: Best Small Home (New Zealand). 2016 New Zealand Architecture Awards: Housing. 2016 Southern Architecture Awards: Winner. Completed in 2022, the 55-square-meter (592-square-foot) home was designed to blend harmoniously with its environment, featuring a simple, gabled form and natural materials that minimize its visual impact. The architects intended for the house to be experienced as a gentle addition to the landscape, "a bit like picking up a small stone on the beach". The house is strategically placed on a thin concrete plinth that elevates it slightly from the ground, providing coastal protection from severe storms and elevated water levels. The plinth's aggregate includes small stones, echoing the pebbles and rocks found on the nearby shoreline. The entire exterior is clad in natural stone, a feature that helps it harmonize with the rocky beach and meadowland. The exterior's rustic appearance and the pitched roof, covered in light slate tiles, give the house a calm and subtle presence. Inside, the summer house offers a stark contrast with a minimalist and slick interior designed to allow the dramatic surrounding scenery to take center stage. Hard stone floors, a beautifully crafted kitchen, and a neutral color palette contribute to a simple yet high-quality finish. The full-height interior is organized into two areas: a main open-plan living space and a section with the bedrooms and a bathroom. Large windows and French doors are placed in the corners, allowing for abundant natural light and framed views of the island landscape. The design emphasizes craftsmanship and a serene atmosphere, with the stone exterior providing a rugged shell that protects and defines the refined interior space. Architecture Office | EAA – Emre Arolat Architecture was founded in May 2004 by Emre Arolat and Gonca Paşolar in Istanbul, as the continuation of Emre Arolat’s architectural practices which he started at his parents’ office, Arolat Architects, as an associate designer in 1987. Today EAA is not only one of the largest architectural offices of Turkey, also has a recognized presence in the global scene along its offices in New York and London in addition to Istanbul. Since its establishment, the studio has built an impressively wide range of works from urban masterplans, airports to residential, cultural buildings and workplaces.  The practice has received international attention very early with the Minicity Theme Park in 2005 which was recognized as Selected Work by the Mies van der Rohe Awards for European Architecture. A great number of international awards followed including Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2010 with the Ipekyol Textile Factory Building. Latest breakthrough project Sancaklar Mosque, a building that blends perfectly with the landscape, is again honored by the selection of Mies van der Rohe Award in 2015, along many others. source: emrearolat.com | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_91bdce2dd8e64141b2458be8c26e891d~mv2.webp PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe EAA - Emre Arolat Architecture Turkey Small Title 2004 Since Architecture Office ---- 2 Project 1.4K Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info. The 76-square-meter house was built into the slope to minimize its impact on the site, which, despite being overrun with pine trees, retains the character of an open field. The design is a study in contrasts, merging traditional mountain architecture with contemporary aesthetics through its distinctive dual-volume structure. The house is composed of two main sections, each defined by a different material and texture. One volume is clad in near-black timber shingles, referencing original mountain homes and housing the sheltered porch and entrance, as well as a bedroom above. The other volume features a smooth white ceramic surface and contains the combined living, dining, and kitchen area. A large picture window on the south side of the white volume creates a strong connection between the interior and the idyllic pine forest and hilly terrain outside. The interior maintains a minimalist aesthetic, allowing the focus to remain on the large window and the surrounding landscape. The design and construction process was constrained by a relatively low budget and the site's inaccessibility, which led the architects to create an architecture of simple, robust gestures using locally available materials like pine wood from nearby forests. The resulting structure, with its monochromatic and asymmetrical form, successfully blends with its natural surroundings while offering a modern, contemplative retreat for its inhabitants. Built using a tongue and groove technique in cooperation with a carpentry factory in Kochi, Japan, the construction and interior living requirements were completed in just six weeks. The project's name comes from the philosophy of leaving the house "half empty" instead of cramming it with possessions, thereby focusing on sensory experiences and connections with the natural environment. The home is located on a heavily forested site, designed to integrate with the landscape without removing trees. A white pavilion near a temple at the entrance provides a resting area for visitors. The house is intended to be adaptable and transformative, promoting an "offline life" and connection to the outdoors with features like movable furniture, a barbecue grill that functions as a kitchen, and camping chairs for the living room. The interior has an open-plan layout, with a small loft above the main living area for sleeping. A large central pillar in front of the foyer supports the home and is meant to symbolize family unity. The roof was deliberately left exposed to the elements to assess its resilience in Taiwan's climate. Camphor wood chips surrounding the cabin provide fragrance and deter insects. The house is designed to withstand typhoons and requires only human assembly. Built as a summer retreat and allotment house for a family of four, the 35-square-meter structure demonstrates maximum efficiency and thoughtful design within strict building limitations. The project harmonizes a deep connection with nature and draws inspiration from architectural masterpieces, creating a space that feels both innovative and timeless. The Villa Minimale's design concept was born from a unique fusion of two architectural inspirations: Villa Rotonda (Andrea Palladio): The Palladian influence is evident in the project's centralized plan and symmetrical layout. Kings Road House (R. M. Schindler): The Los Angeles home's spirit is echoed in the use of four distinct volumes and the creative spatial arrangement. The house is composed of four identical, prefabricated wooden "sheds" arranged in a windmill-like formation around a central, circular air space. This innovative layout maximizes natural light and ventilation while blurring the lines between the interior and exterior. A prominent central oculus or skylight allows for views of the starry night sky from the upper-level sleeping areas. Despite being constrained by local regulations that limit its footprint to 35 m² and its height to 5 meters, the Villa Minimale achieves exceptional spatial efficiency. The interior is expertly planned to serve a family of four. The central area features a dining space, surrounded by a kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet, and a cozy reading alcove. A staircase provides access to the upper level. The upper level contains three bunk beds, offering a "camping-like" feel that is accentuated by the skylight views. The exterior features prefabricated timber construction with light-glazed timber battens and a copper roof. The inner surfaces are lined with veneered marine pine plywood, creating a warm, natural, and inviting atmosphere. The design creates a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors, allowing views of the surrounding landscape in all four directions.
