PREFABRICATED | Tiny House | The ÁPH80 Transportable House, designed and manufactured by the Spanish firm Ábaton Arquitectura, is a prefabricated micro-dwelling designed for two people and can be delivered anywhere by road. The project, launched in 2013, explores a flexible, minimalist, and sustainable approach to living. Although it is no longer in production, the ÁPH80 is a notable exploration into transportable micro-architecture. Design and architectural features Dimensions: The unit measures 27 square meters (9 x 3 meters). Layout: The compact interior is intelligently arranged to maximize the sense of space, without hallways or wasted areas. The gabled roof provides an interior height of up to 3.5 meters. It contains three distinct spaces: A central living room/kitchen. A double bedroom at one end. A full bathroom with a shower at the other end. Large openings: The house features large front openings with sliding glass doors to connect the interior with the surrounding landscape. The exterior is clad in grey cement-wood board panels, which give it a minimalist, sculptural, and monolithic appearance. These panels can also function as hinged shutters, allowing the home to be completely closed off for privacy and security. The interior is paneled with sustainably sourced Spanish fir, stained white to enhance the feeling of light and spaciousness. Construction and sustainability The ÁPH80 is a low-cost, prefabricated solution. It was manufactured using a solid timber frame with numerical control, which allowed for precise, off-site construction. The finished home was transported by truck and could be assembled on-site in a single day, minimizing disruption to the landscape. Materials: Ábaton selected recycled and recyclable materials for construction. Exterior: Grey cement-wood board cladding. Structure: Solid timber. Interior: Whitened Spanish fir. Insulation: The structure includes a ventilated facade with 12 cm of thermal insulation. COMMERCIAL | Facade design | Studio Libeskind designed the bold façade of the new Hyundai Development Company headquarters located in Seoul, South Korea, to integrate the building with a public plaza and below-grade spaces, as well as serve future development on the site. A gigantic, 203-foot ring, encompassing red and white geometric forms, and an inclined metal vector was superimposed onto the existing modern office tower, transforming the main façade and plaza areas. The façade also includes working balconies and louvers. The design explores the interplay of light and shadow, varying light conditions throughout the year and creating a meditative environment for reflection. HOSPITALITY | Modular House | The Nomad Houses are a cluster of eco-friendly, modern modular homes designed by ZROBIM Architects as part of the BY HOME modular housing ecosystem. Completed in 2023, the homes function as a glamping-style eco-hotel and are situated in the Braslav Lakes National Park in Belarus. The project was developed to promote domestic tourism by creating stylish, modern architecture that complements the region's pristine natural landscape, known for its glacial lakes and relict forests. The architectural design is characterized by Scandinavian minimalism, focusing on modularity, natural materials, panoramic glazing, and expansive terraces. The homes come in several types—including Camp B, Camp C, Camp C Flat, and a SPA module—varying in size from 17 to 55 square meters to accommodate different group sizes. RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2023, the 1600-square-foot Telescope House is a retreat in the high-desert landscape of Sedona, Arizona, designed by Phoenix-based Wendell Burnette Architects. The house was commissioned by clients who, after visiting the area for decades, wanted a low-impact home that would serve as a seasonal retreat, a short-term rental, and eventually, their full-time residence. The house's design is inspired by the metaphor of a "land-based telescope" that frames specific views of the dramatic desert landscape. Situated on a gently sloping site on the footprint of a former building, the house is intentionally understated. The rectangular form is nestled between two rows of centuries-old Juniper trees that frame views of the iconic Cathedral Rock and Munds Mountain. Clad in weathering Corten steel and with steel-plate window frames, the exterior helps the building recede into the landscape like a "dark shadow," particularly at night, and offers excellent fire resistance. The interiors are designed as a "welcome respite for the eyes in the desert," with a minimalist, dark-toned palette. The floors, walls, ceilings, doors, and cabinets are crafted from FSC-certified recycled wood-dust panels impregnated with a dark pigment, then waxed and buffed. A telescopic central hall, with interior surfaces that step up and out, subtly directs attention toward the panoramic east-facing view. This layout connects the more private, cabinet-like bedroom and bathroom areas on the south to the main living, kitchen, and dining spaces at the east end. RECREATIONAL | Cabin | Utrecht Cabin, or Recreational House, is a 40-square-meter contemporary cottage in a rural area north of Utrecht, Netherlands. Completed around 2014, the cabin was a collaboration between Zecc Architecten and interior designer Roel van Norel. It is built on the footprint of a former greenhouse and offers a serene getaway for the owners. The cabin features an asymmetrical gable roof clad in slate stone, with a chimney. The exterior combines a largely closed side with one that is highly adaptable, featuring movable horizontal shutters made of Western Red Cedar. When closed, these shutters blend seamlessly with the building's facade, offering privacy and a homogenous appearance. When open, they reveal a full glass wall, connecting the interior with the surrounding woods and a grassy clearing. The interior of the tiny house is defined by fine wood craftsmanship and clever use of space. All facilities—including the kitchen, wood stove, bathroom, and storage—are integrated into a single, handmade oak wall. The space is divided into a front living and dining area and a rear bedroom and bath. A sliding wooden panel can separate these sections for greater privacy. Above the rear section, a mezzanine provides extra sleeping space. Light enters through the full glass wall and a vertical window in the bedroom that extends to the roof's ridgeline.
