STUDIOS | Cabin | Pine Nut Cabane, designed by Daab Design, is a timber-clad retreat set within a pine forest and olive grove near Marseille, France. Created for a multi-generational family, the cabin serves as a guest studio, artist's workspace, and rural escape. Its design prioritizes flexibility and a deep connection to its natural surroundings. The minimalist design, with its simple volume and use of local materials, references traditional regional farming architecture. The cabin is intended as a subtle, understated space that enhances the client's favorite spot on their property, a place for painting and playing pétanque. The 35 m² cabin is carefully positioned on a rural property outside Marseille, hidden from both the main farmhouse and local roads. It is oriented to the east to capture the gentle morning sunlight and offer expansive valley views. A dense pine forest on the south side provides natural shading from the intense Mediterranean sun. The cabin is clad in scorched pine, a durable, locally sourced material that allows the structure to blend with the forest landscape. The interior features a combination of light plywood panels, matte-black surfaces, and polished concrete floors. This provides a tranquil, balanced atmosphere that contrasts with the bright outdoor light. RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | House MM is a renovation project completed in 2020 by the Slovenian firm a2o2 arhitekti in Domžale, Slovenia. The project involved renovating a derelict early 20th-century house to retain its historic character while adapting it for modern living. The architects and owners aimed to present a financially viable and sustainable alternative to new construction, preserving a piece of the neighborhood's "anonymous built heritage". Design and architectural features Balancing old and new: The exterior of the original brick house, including the facades and window openings, was preserved. A new metal roof was installed to replace the original one, which was beyond repair. New, modern interventions were deliberately designed to be distinct from the old structure, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Open and layered interior: The interior was cleared of redundant layers to expose the original structure. A new wooden-clad service core was inserted inside, keeping it separate from the old walls. Vertical spatial sequence: The home is arranged vertically, featuring a kitchen and dining area at ground level. A double-height living space with a fireplace and a large window opens onto the garden, while a new mezzanine bedroom is situated above the kitchen. Materiality: The new additions are clad in timber, contrasting with the old masonry. The ground floor is finished with terrazzo, achieved by polishing the concrete flooring. The owners were actively involved in the renovation. With the help of a restoration specialist, they restored the original windows and helped with the interior paneling and terrazzo flooring. The modern-day retreat was conceived as a surprise gift from a husband to his wife, an art museum patron, art collector, and philanthropist, to serve as a creative studio and lounge space. Perched 12 feet off the ground, the treehouse is situated in a back corner of the property and offers exceptional views of the Getty Center and downtown Los Angeles. The design is a clever interpretation of a childhood treehouse, reflecting the client's affinity for such a retreat while providing an adult environment. The project incorporates a live but fallen pine tree, with the structure hovering above it to suggest a delicate balance between the architecture and nature. A key feature is a glass viewport in the walnut floor, which symbolically connects the structure to the tree below, reminiscent of a classic treehouse hatch. Access is provided by a concrete stair that leads up to an open metal and wood plank stair, a modern interpretation of a treehouse ladder. The unique, angular plan was influenced by the tight site and setback requirements. The interior of the micro-house is equipped with modern amenities, including a toilet, running water, a daybed, and a small refrigerator. The space is wrapped in rich materials, such as walnut paneling and floors, mahogany windows, and ipe-wood ceilings and decks. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany windows and a glass clerestory provide abundant natural light and ventilation while framing views of the canyon and city. The exterior is clad in deep-oiled cedar siding for durability and beauty. A butterfly-shaped metal roof with a Kynar finish seemingly floats above the structure, supported by five angled steel columns. An outdoor shower, sculpted from concrete, is located below the treehouse.
