Located in a hilly valley near an existing basin, the triangular building's position was chosen to optimize the views of the surrounding natural landscape. The architectural design is notable for its heavy, archetypal, and steeply pitched roof, which creates a strong visual contrast with the extensive glazing that encircles the building. This transparency makes the roof appear to hover in the air, blurring the distinction between the interior and exterior and allowing the building and its surroundings to be enjoyed throughout the year. The design also subtly references ethnic Lithuanian house-building traditions through its wooden roof structure, with its repetitive trusses and 120-centimeter-high beams. A central skylight is integrated into the roof to provide additional natural light. Inside, the interior is modern and follows the same grey-brown color and material palette as the exterior, reinforcing the connection to nature. The space is organized around three central elements: a fireplace, a kitchen island, and a core volume that contains the utility rooms. This arrangement keeps the perimeter free, emphasizing the open floor plan and the unimpeded views offered by the wide-opening windows. Outside, the project includes an outdoor swimming pool, a small sand beach, and a BBQ area. The entire structure is designed to function as a seamless part of its natural setting. The project is a contemporary take on the traditional American cabin, splitting the living spaces into two distinct, minimalist volumes to accommodate the family's desire for privacy. Perched on a cliff at 10,000 feet, the cabins offer sweeping views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Collegiate Peaks, and the South Platte River. The design is informed by the character of traditional utilitarian structures found in the region, featuring simple rectangular forms, steeply pitched metal roofs, and exterior cedar siding that is stained dark to help the structure blend into the surrounding pine forest. The cabins sit on isolated pier foundations, which minimizes excavation, maintains the natural topography of the rocky site, and allows snow and water runoff to flow freely underneath. A steel grate deck connects the two structures and wraps around a mature pine tree, creating a protected, central outdoor space. The interior palette is also simple and rustic, with raw plywood walls and ceilings. Large windows and a rectangular floor plan maximize natural light and passive solar gain, while carefully placed operable windows encourage natural cross-ventilation. Energy efficiency is a core component of the design, with a highly insulated thermal envelope, efficient appliances, LED lighting, and low-e double and triple-pane windows. A high-efficiency boiler provides radiant floor heating, and a wood-burning stove provides additional warmth and ambiance. The home is also pre-wired for a solar array that is intended to supply 100% of its electricity. Serving as a private office, art studio, and guest quarters, the structure was purposefully built on a pier-and-beam foundation, allowing it to be moved over short distances should the need arise. The design of The Nook is a unique fusion of Japanese, Scandinavian, and Texan aesthetics, with a strong focus on connecting the compact interior with the surrounding natural forest environment. For its exterior, The Nook is clad in charred cedar, a Japanese-inspired technique known as Shou Sugi Ban, chosen for both its durability and its aesthetic. This dark material contrasts with the rich white oak finishes used throughout the interior, which create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Local Texas limestone was also incorporated to anchor the design and further tie the structure to its immediate environment. A key feature is the floating wood deck, which cantilevers over a nearby creek, creating a serene, immersive outdoor space. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and ample glass are used strategically to blur the lines between inside and out, filling the space with natural light. Inside, the compact space is organized efficiently to feel much larger than its footprint suggests. It includes a 107-square-foot sleeping loft, along with a kitchenette, a full bathroom, and a workspace designed to be a sanctuary for creativity. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail ensure that every element is optimized for function, efficiency, and pristine form. Following the project's completion, French made professionally drafted construction plans available for purchase, enabling others to build their own versions of The Nook.
