The project was developed as part of the initial phase of the park's master plan and aimed to create accessible, affordable, and restorative overnight accommodations for park visitors. Inspired by the concept of a treehouse, the cabins are elevated on wooded hillsides, with access provided by bridges that connect directly from adjacent hiking and ski trails. Designed to blend seamlessly with the natural environment, the cabins feature natural cedar cladding and are oriented to maximize views of the forest and prairie. Each cabin offers sleeping space for up to six people, with a combination of bunk beds and daybeds. While they do not have running water, the cabins are equipped with electricity, heating, and lighting, allowing for comfortable year-round use. Amenities include a picnic table and fire ring outside, while shared restroom facilities are located nearby. The design emphasizes a connection to nature, encouraging guests to enjoy the peaceful surroundings with limited modern distractions. The project has received significant recognition, including a 2016 American Architectural Award sponsored by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. This award acknowledged the innovative design that integrates with the wooded site while making camping accessible to a wider audience, including those with special access needs. The cabins have been a popular addition to the park, with reservations often needing to be made well in advance. Created with a small budget and simple construction methods, the cabin serves as a vacation shelter for surfers while exploring minimalist living. The project's intention was to build an affordable, nature-infused dwelling by merging a travel trailer with a larger wooden construction. With minimal and primitive construction using basic tools, the design explores what is essential for a "magical holiday shelter". The cabin is located in Aposentillo, a rural surfing village on Nicaragua's northern Pacific coast. After traveling down the Pacific Coast in search of the perfect wave, Serrano purchased a half-acre plot and began the project, which was partially inspired by a four-month period of living exclusively out of his camper. The structure is built primarily from locally sourced teak wood and assembled with simple metal joints. A neighboring carpenter provided wood cuts, and a local welder fabricated the metal joist hangers. The exterior features a gently pitched, corrugated steel roof that protects the home from the rain and allows for ventilation. The camper itself was detached from its truck and placed on stilts, becoming the home's bedroom. The main living space, kitchen, and bathroom are housed within the new timber frame. A sliding teak and fabric partition allows the main living area to open entirely to the surrounding landscape, blurring the line between interior and exterior. The area beneath the raised camper is used for storage, primarily for surfboards. Windows on the back facade are covered by wooden panels that can be raised and lowered using ropes and pulleys. Paper lanterns and spotlights inside the cabin cause it to radiate a warm glow at night, appearing like a lantern from the outside. Project credits Architect: Dani Serrano. Builder/Collaborator: Tiemo Riediger, a carpenter and friend who assisted with construction. Originally conceived as a weekend getaway, the project evolved into a more permanent refuge for the designer. Nestled in a location with no electricity, phone reception, or neighbors, the cabin is a testament to mindful, solitary living. The small, one-room structure is built with a lightweight, timber-frame construction. A unique feature of the design is the use of sliding floor-to-ceiling glass doors on one side, which not only provide expansive views of the wooded surroundings but also fully open to connect the interior with the natural landscape. When fully open, the cabin essentially becomes a semi-enclosed terrace, blurring the line between inside and out. Inside, the space features a polished concrete floor and a central steel-plate fireplace that creates a focal point. A black, custom-built kitchen is integrated into the wall opposite the fireplace, while a bathtub is strategically placed in front of the large windows to maximize the view. The ceiling is finished with pine plywood panels, while a skylight over the bed bathes the room in natural light. The project was built over five months with the help of a small team of local carpenters. Materials were sourced locally, with the primary construction using timber and stone from the area, a choice that grounded the building in its natural surroundings. The home's design reflects a philosophy of prioritizing a connection to nature over modern conveniences, offering a quiet escape from the distractions of city life. The 3,200-square-foot retreat was commissioned by two brothers, who wanted a gathering space to share their love for outdoor activities with friends and family. The design blends into its natural setting while offering a modern and inviting interior. The "canyon of hospitality": The heart of the cabin's design is a central atrium that soars three stories high. A prominent concrete fireplace anchors this space, making it a focal point visible from all levels and generating a sense of warmth and gathering. A bridge on the second floor traverses this void, connecting the private bedrooms and creating more communal space. The exterior of the cabin features a unique two-toned finish using larch wood. The exposed planks are charred using the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban method, while the recessed sections are protected with a natural oil. This interplay of dark and light enhances the cabin's striking appearance. Expansive windows and large sliding glass doors frame panoramic views of Lake Brome and the surrounding wooded landscape. The cabin is strategically positioned to take advantage of its urban-width site, which is squeezed between neighboring properties but opens up to an infinite lake view. The cabin is highly insulated and airtight, withstanding the region's cold winters, which can reach temperatures of -40°F (-40°C). The building was conceived as an "archetypal house," with a gabled roofline and multiple entrances, which helps it fit into the traditional character of the surrounding town. The interior material palette is a simple mix of concrete, wood, and glass. The ground floor, which includes the kitchen, dining room, and living room, is organized around the central fireplace. The second floor contains four bedrooms that open onto the bridge overlooking the central atrium. The cabin was designed to accommodate a range of leisure activities, including playing music, board games, and watching movies.
