RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Half-Tree House, designed by Jacobschang Architecture, is a 360-square-foot, off-grid cabin located on a remote, 60-acre property in a second-growth forest in Sullivan County, upstate New York. RESIDENTIAL | House | Situated in an olive grove in Halkidiki, Greece, The Olive Tree House is a 21-square-meter prefabricated summer house designed by Eva Sopeoglou Architecture and completed in 2016. The project was conceived as a low-maintenance, eco-conscious weekend retreat for its client, offering stunning views of the sea and the monasteries of Mount Athos. The design stands out for its creative use of a perforated, olive-green metallic envelope, which wraps around the structure and is inspired by the dappled shade of olive trees. This innovative cladding, developed in collaboration with metal fabricator METALSO, uses a CNC punching machine to create a textile-like pattern with leaf-shaped perforations. As the sun moves, this envelope fills the interior with a dynamic play of light and shadow, blurring the line between inside and outside. The house's rectangular, 3-by-7-meter plan is oriented to the cardinal points, a strategic placement that maximizes shading, natural ventilation, and views. A thin corridor connects the small interior rooms, which include a kitchen and bedroom, and is aligned with the surrounding olive trees. The building's orientation allows each room to have its own character based on the quality and intensity of its shadows, with colorful morning light on the east side and dramatic midday effects from the south. Full-height sliding metal doors allow the internal spaces to open up completely to the landscape, facilitating semi-indoor and outdoor living. To ensure interior comfort, the design relies on natural ventilation, including a sloped roof that helps extract hot air. The prefabricated nature of the components allows the house to be dismantled at any time, leaving a minimal environmental footprint. Completed in 2024, the house is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional wooden cabin. Its minimalist footprint and design focus on reducing its impact on the site's unique trees and rocks. The home's spatial experience is characterized by a deliberate alternation between open and sheltered areas. The main living area features extensive glazing, stretching toward the forest and opening onto a terrace that extends the interior outward. The house's location allows the seasonal foliage to either warm the interior with sunlight or cool it by filtering the light. Functional elements such as the kitchen, storage, and mechanical systems are integrated into a central block of furniture, optimizing function while minimizing the built area and concealing conduits for a cleaner aesthetic. A low-ceilinged threshold marks the transition to the private night zone, which includes two bedrooms flanking a central block of water features. The project's material strategy emphasizes a more economical and frugal use of wood compared to glued laminated timber. It celebrates the precision of the assemblies and the beauty of raw materials. RESIDENTIAL | Prefabricated | German industrial designer Patrick Frey and architect Björn Götte collaborated on the Sommerhaus Piu, a prefabricated wooden holiday home completed in 2011. Inspired by Scandinavian summerhouse culture, the design is a modern take on the traditional wilderness retreat, intended to be a versatile space for young families, independent study, or a serene home for retirees. The name Piu, meaning "more" in Italian, reflects the home's ability to offer a rich experience in a compact form. The prefab structure is delivered to the site and can be assembled in a single day. The exterior is defined by elegant, horizontally-placed strips of wood, complemented by charcoal-colored edging on the slightly pitched shed roof, and a covered veranda that wraps around the house. HOSPITALITY | Cabin | Situated at the Fazenda Pedra Alta farm in Joanópolis, Brazil, the Altar Ninho Cabin by Natureza Urbana is an elevated, sustainable, and compact retreat designed for deep immersion in nature. Completed in July 2023, the 20-square-meter treehouse-style cabin is part of Altar's broader initiative to create decentralized hotels, offering a glamping experience that uses technology to promote sustainable hospitality. The cabin was constructed with a prefabricated metallic structure to minimize environmental impact and reduce on-site construction time. Elevated on metal pillars to a height of up to four meters, the structure's off-the-ground position reduces its footprint on the landscape, preserves the natural topography, and gives guests expansive views over the surrounding Atlantic Forest and the Joanópolis Reservoir. Inside, the living, kitchen, and bedroom spaces are integrated into a single, light-filled environment, with a strategically placed large opening next to the queen-size bunk bed offering direct and immersive views of the reservoir. CULTURAL ARCHITECTURE | Film Museum and Cinema | EYE Film Institute Netherlands is situated on a prime location at the bend of the river IJ, opposite the historical part of the city and the Central Station. The building is conceived as a highly tense and dynamic geometric solid. The light is reflected in multiple ways by smooth, crystalline surfaces, thus subjecting the building’s appearance to permanent optical changes during the course of the day. Movement and light manifest themselves clearly as essential parameters for the film as a medium in the architectural production. The entrance into the building is characterised by continuous spatial concentration and directed visual relations. Spatial development, light incidence, and materiality define the path that leads from the southern glass front and the museum shop into the heart of the building. The room widens successively, before unfolding its full dimensions as an architectural and functional focus. CULTURAL | Exhibition Center | The constant relation between antonyms is an inspiration to the new greenhouses in central Shanghai. The project is highly influenced by the presence of an historical reference: the old steel workshop, that once was an important catalyst of the city‘s industrial growth. This duality of old and new invokes the “Yin and Yang” ideology that is seen in the many different faces of the project. Tradition and Future, Industrial and Natural, Orthogonal and Organic, Static and Movement, Silence and Sound, Land and Water, Steel and Glass, synchronize into a gracious gesture, building up unique moments for the visitors. As an important symbol for the whole area, the Steel Workshop plays a vital role in combination with the new elements: it sets the tone and metric for the exhibition halls to be develop. The geometries grow organically in between and around the strict existing grid, performing a vivid and natural silhouette that respects and never touches the remaining framework. The multiple curvatures generated by the reaction from the Organic towards the Orthogonal and Static principles, provide a sinuous envelope that has all to do with nature. Different natural scenarios and climates are recreated inside the four single-glazed pavilions, forecasting a lively journey to the visitors. They can experience the canyons, sandy dunes and plants from the Desert Pavilion. The swamps, waterfalls and tropical vegetation of the Natural Rainforest exhibition or the digital caves, cascades, fruit-trees and flowers of the Cloud Garden Hall. The roof is composed by circular windows in order to maximize the sunlight brought inside for the plants to grow.
