RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Ohio Valley Hut is a 600-square-foot, off-grid cabin located on a 2,000-acre family cattle farm in Belmont County, Ohio. Designed and built by architect Greg Dutton, the project was inspired by Scandinavian design and the "hygge" concept of coziness. Completed in 2018, the hut was a collaborative effort with Dutton's brother, Chris, their father, John, and other family and friends. RESIDENTIAL | Modular House | Located in Olst, the Netherlands, the Sprout Ruben & Marjolein is a bio-based, compact home created by Amsterdam-based studio Woonpioniers. Completed as a prototype for the studio's flexible and transportable Sprout concept, the house was developed for actual clients Ruben and Marjolein. The design is based on a prefabricated, modular system that can be lengthened, shortened, or stacked, with the specific build in Olst comprising a two-story volume topped with a mono-pitched roof and an open, greenhouse-like volume. The project emphasizes sustainability by utilizing as many bio-based materials as possible, including a wooden frame structure and a hemp insulation system. The modular approach not only makes the home transportable and adaptable but also provides affordable square meters and energetic benefits. The greenhouse element is integrated into the living and dining area, which opens to the outside and, in turn, provides extra living comfort. The interior features a flexible floor plan with minimal rooms and maximum open space, and a natural collection of materials is used to connect the home with its environment. The interiors are highly personalized to the clients' wishes, with the greenhouse section of the home featuring an interior mezzanine terrace suspended above it. RESIDENTIAL | Retreat | The Sawmill Treehouse is an elevated, steel-clad cabin designed by Australian architect Robbie Walker in the rural Victorian High Country. It was created as a compact residential retreat for a client who valued a deep connection with nature and sought a sustainable escape to share with family and friends. Located in Sawmill Settlement, a leafy, alpine environment at the base of Mount Buller, the cabin is perched above a gully where street water discharges during large storms. The design is a clever response to the challenging site. The structure is elevated on four slim, steel columns that mimic the surrounding tree trunks, allowing water and wildlife to pass freely underneath. The single-story, rectangular cabin is wrapped in a skin of dark, weathered steel slats chosen for their durability in a bushfire-prone area (BAL 40 zone). These slats function as a rainscreen, providing shade and allowing air to circulate, which helps passively cool the building in the hot Australian summer, eliminating the need for air conditioning. Inside, the palette is intentionally pared-back and warm, with floors, walls, and ceilings lined entirely in Victorian ash wood. The compact layout includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and living area. The living space features a full-span glass wall that frames spectacular views of the gully and the surrounding tall trees. The design also incorporates bespoke, built-in furniture designed by Robbie Walker himself. A separate, smaller structure built on a flatter section of the site includes a garage, laundry, and a hidden outdoor kitchen. It was created as a compact residential retreat for a client who valued a deep connection with nature and sought a sustainable escape to share with family and friends. Located in Sawmill Settlement, a leafy, alpine environment at the base of Mount Buller, the cabin is perched above a gully where street water discharges during large storms. The design is a clever response to the challenging site. The structure is elevated on four slim, steel columns that mimic the surrounding tree trunks, allowing water and wildlife to pass freely underneath. The single-story, rectangular cabin is wrapped in a skin of dark, weathered steel slats chosen for their durability in a bushfire-prone area (BAL 40 zone). These slats function as a rainscreen, providing shade and allowing air to circulate, which helps passively cool the building in the hot Australian summer, eliminating the need for air conditioning. Inside, the palette is intentionally pared-back and warm, with floors, walls, and ceilings lined entirely in Victorian ash wood. The compact layout includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and living area. The living space features a full-span glass wall that frames spectacular views of the gully and the surrounding tall trees. The design also incorporates bespoke, built-in furniture designed by Robbie Walker himself. A separate, smaller structure built on a flatter section of the site includes a garage, laundry, and a hidden outdoor kitchen. The project's most significant environmental achievement is its restraint. Despite having ample space, the client chose to build a small, one-bedroom retreat to minimize its impact on the special site. LOGISTICS | Office | The new Barco HQ serves as a central point of the campus as it connects different parts of the site. It is a hinge point, a 3D frame in which all functions collide. The unusual circular shape exudes dynamics and compactness: a powerful concept with a unique mix of materials. Concrete and steel play leading roles in the design, in addition to the glass façade. The circularity in the design and the sophisticated connections via passarelles stimulate encounters and creates a lively ambiance. The whole construction gets the maximum amount of daylight thanks to the transparent façade, which contrasts beautifully with the inset ramps that adds relief and depth to the building. On the ground floor is located auditorium, reception area and a big restaurant, which serves also as an informal meeting room or a training location. Higher up are situated offices, R&D facilities, training rooms and oval meeting decks with meeting rooms and a boardroom. The concept for the Vanke Pavilion incorporates three ideas drawn from Chinese culture related to food: the shi-tang, a traditional Chinese dining hall; the landscape, the fundamental element to life; and the dragon, which is metaphorically related to farming and sustenance. All three of these concepts are incorporated in the Vanke Pavilion’s exhibition, architecture and program. Situated on the southeast edge of the Lake Arena, the 800-square meter pavilion appears to rise from the east, forming a dynamic, vertical landscape. The design is sensitive to its surroundings, particularly the large tree canopy that provides protection for the small building. The exterior is clad in charred timber (shou sugi ban), which takes on the dark tones of its environment and provides protection from the elements. The form is characterized by a rectilinear elevation contrasted by a large, circular, moon-like opening. A pergola structure acts as an intermediate threshold between the shared garden and the interior. This space can be screened for privacy by sliding lattice panels that mask the full-width glazing. The interior of the single-room space is designed to feel bright and open. Birch plywood wall linings give a soft, warm feel, while Douglas fir flooring provides an organic texture. The roof features exposed diagonal joists, reminiscent of tree branches, and circular skylights cast dappled light onto the floor and provide views of the tree canopy above. The project was commissioned by the client to provide a home for their mother who had moved to the city to be near family. Built on the site of a former raised terrace, the new structure is designed to harmonize with its garden setting. The design is sensitive to its surroundings, particularly the large tree canopy that provides protection for the small building. The exterior is clad in charred timber (shou sugi ban), which takes on the dark tones of its environment and provides protection from the elements. The form is characterized by a rectilinear elevation contrasted by a large, circular, moon-like opening. A pergola structure acts as an intermediate threshold between the shared garden and the interior. This space can be screened for privacy by sliding lattice panels that mask the full-width glazing. The interior of the single-room space is designed to feel bright and open. Birch plywood wall linings give a soft, warm feel, while Douglas fir flooring provides an organic texture. The roof features exposed diagonal joists, reminiscent of tree branches, and circular skylights cast dappled light onto the floor and provide views of the tree canopy above. A full-height cupboard divides the space to create a separate shower room while maintaining visual continuity of the ceiling. The highly sustainable design features excellent insulation, electric underfloor heating, and natural light and ventilation. The dry-construction technology is fully reversible, as the structure is built on small screw piles that can be easily removed. RESIDENTIAL | Hut | Tucked away in a remote and rugged part of the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands, the Culardoch Shieling is a small mountain hut designed by London and Aberdeenshire-based firm Moxon Architects. The 47-square-meter hut is a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Scottish farming crofts, shepherd's shelters, and Swiss Alpine shacks. It was commissioned by art dealers Iwan and Manuela Wirth, who sought a private, remote space on their estate for entertaining guests. The design is a clever blend of regional vernacular architecture and 20th-century modernism. Its monolithic, wooden form draws inspiration from the simple aesthetic of local livestock buildings, while its irregular, strategically placed windows are reminiscent of Le Corbusier's iconic Chapelle Notre Dame du Haut at Ronchamp.
